Chapter 5 - The Shadow of Richard Bellacourt

Z

Three weeks passed.

Life inside the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit became my entire world. The rhythmic beep of heart monitors, the quiet murmur of nurses, and the sharp scent of medical-grade sanitizer replaced the high-society dinners and fake smiles I had endured for years.

Maya was a fighter. Her tiny lungs grew stronger every day, her weight climbing past five pounds. I spent hours sitting beside her incubator, reaching through the small plastic portals to hold her tiny hand. She was the only good thing to come out of my nightmare with the Bellacourt family.

I had moved my belongings out of the grand Bellacourt estate in Pacific Palisades and rented a secure, gated townhome near the hospital. My government security detail was persistent; two plainclothes state troopers were stationed outside my door 24/7.

Victoria, Evan, and Celeste were still rotting in the federal detention center, their high-priced lawyers failing at every turn to secure bail. The media circus surrounding the family had reached a fever pitch. Front pages dubbed them "The Vineyard Monsters," and public outrage was so severe that even their oldest country club friends had publicly denounced them.

Everything seemed to be falling into place.

Until Tuesday morning.

I was sitting in the hospital cafeteria, drinking tea and reading through the latest financial recovery reports sent by Mara, when my phone buzzed on the table. It was an unknown number with an international country code.

My thumb hovered over the screen. I almost ignored it, but something in my gut—the same forensic instinct that had caught the Bellacourts' fraud—told me to answer.

"Claire," a deep, smooth voice purred through the speaker.

My blood ran cold. The tea cup trembled in my hand.

It was Richard Bellacourt.

"Richard," I said, keeping my voice entirely flat, devoid of emotion. "Calling from a non-extradition country, I assume?"

He chuckled softly, a dry, terrifying sound. "You always were the smartest person in that house, my dear. Victoria thought you were a mouse. I knew you were a snake... I just underestimated how deep you had burrowed into my foundations."

"Your foundations were built on stolen state pensions, Richard," I replied, standing up and walking toward a quiet corner of the cafeteria. "And your family is paying for it. Your wife and children are sitting in federal cells right now."

"My wife is a loud, hysterical fool who spent two million dollars a year on dresses," Richard said coldly, without a hint of warmth or regret. "And my children are weak. Evan couldn't even manage a simple wire transfer without leaving a digital footprint, and Celeste is a vain airhead. They served their purpose. They distracted you while I prepared my exit."

"You left them behind," I said, disgusted by his absolute lack of humanity. "You let them take the fall for your empire."

"They were casualties of war, Claire," Richard said smoothly. "In chess, you sacrifice pawns to protect the king. But you... you did something quite extraordinary. You managed to freeze eighty-three million dollars of my private liquidity in Vaduz."

"And you'll never touch a penny of it again," I fired back. "The Department of Justice is seizing every asset associated with your shell network."

Silence stretched over the line for a long, agonizing moment. When Richard spoke again, his tone was no longer smooth. It was razor-sharp and deadly.

"Listen to me very carefully, Claire," he growled softly into the receiver. "You took my money. You destroyed my name. You put my family behind bars. I can build a new company. I can buy a new name. But no one—no one—steals eighty million dollars from Richard Bellacourt and lives to enjoy it."

"Are you threatening me?" I demanded, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"I don't make threats, Claire. I make investments," he replied calmly. "You have something very precious in that hospital NICU, don't you? A little girl named Maya."

A jolt of pure, icy terror shot through my spine, paralyzing my breath.

"If you so much as look in her direction, I will tear you apart piece by piece!" I shouted, completely losing my professional composure.

"I won't have to look," Richard sneered. "I have resources everywhere, Claire. Even in Los Angeles. You have forty-eight hours to instruct the Attorney General's office to unfreeze the Vaduz account and drop the international Interpol red notice against me. If you don't..."

He paused, letting the silence hang heavy in the air.

"...you'll find out just how far a desperate father will go."

The line went dead.

I stood in the corner of the cafeteria, my hands shaking so violently I nearly dropped the phone. The room seemed to spin around me.

He knows about Maya. He knows where she is.

I turned and sprinted toward the elevators, ignoring the sharp pain in my lower abdomen where my surgical scar strained under the sudden motion.

When I reached the 4th-floor NICU, my heart slammed against my chest. The double glass doors were open, and two hospital security guards were standing inside, talking frantically with the head nurse.

"What happened?!" I screamed, rushing into the unit. "Where is my baby?!"

The head nurse turned, her face pale. "Claire! Calm down—"

"Where is Maya?!" I pushed past her, running to incubator number 4.

It was empty.

The soft blankets were tossed aside. The heart monitor was displaying a flatline static signal, its alarm muted.

My knees buckled. I fell to the floor, a sound of pure, unadulterated agony tearing from my throat.

"No... no, no, NO! MAYA!"

"Claire, stop!" Agent Mara Voss’s voice suddenly boomed from the doorway. She rushed into the room, grabbing my shoulders and pulling me up from the floor. "Claire! Look at me! Look at me!"

"She’s gone, Mara! He took her!" I sobbed hysterically, clawing at Mara’s jacket. "Richard took my baby!"

"Claire, listen to my voice!" Mara shook me gently. "Maya is safe! She’s not gone!"

I froze, tears streaming down my face. "What... what did you say?"

Mara motioned to the head nurse, who nodded and walked to a private isolation room at the back of the NICU. Through the glass, I saw a specialized transport team surrounding a secondary incubator.

"An hour ago, our intelligence team intercepted an encrypted communication from a private security firm in Mexico City," Mara explained quickly, wiping a tear from my cheek. "Richard hired a team to snatch Maya from the nursery today. We anticipated this. We moved Maya to a secure isolation room thirty minutes ago and set up a decoy in her primary incubator."

I gasped, my body trembling with relief as I watched through the glass. Maya was lying peacefully inside the isolation incubator, sleeping quietly under the warm lights.

"We caught the operative," Mara added, her jaw tightening. "A former private contractor dressed as a scrub technician. He was arrested in the hallway with a infant transport bag."

I closed my eyes, leaning heavily against Mara, breathing in ragged, shuddering gasps. The relief was overwhelming, but underneath it, a dark, terrifying reality set in.

Richard Bellacourt wasn't just trying to defend himself in court. He was waging an all-out war. He was willing to cross every line, commit every crime, and sacrifice every human life to regain his wealth and power.

I opened my eyes, looking through the glass at my daughter. The fear that had consumed me for the past twenty minutes suddenly vanished, replaced by a cold, murderous clarity.

"He called me," I whispered to Mara.

Mara snapped her head toward me. "Richard called you directly?"

"He gave me forty-eight hours to unfreeze his Swiss accounts and drop the Interpol warrant," I said, my voice dropping an octave into a tone Mara had never heard from me before. "He threatened my daughter."

Mara’s eyes narrowed. "Did you trace the call?"

"I didn't need to," I said, pulling my tablet out of my bag. "Richard thinks he’s playing chess. But he made a mistake."

"What mistake?"

"He used his private satellite phone," I said, showing Mara the screen. "The one registered to his offshore yacht, The Royal Empress."

Mara looked at the coordinates blinking on the map. "He’s not in Dubai."

"No," I smiled, a dark, dangerous expression. "He’s floating in international waters, forty miles off the coast of Cabo San Lucas. He thinks he’s safe because he’s in international territory."

I looked back at Maya through the glass, my fist clenching tightly.

"Mara," I said quietly. "Call the United States Coast Guard and the Navy's Maritime Special Warfare group. Tell them we have the mastermind of an international criminal enterprise in international waters... and I’m personally going to join the raid."
