Chapter 9 - The Intruder’s Shadow

Z
Two weeks after Arthur’s departure, life on Bainbridge Island settled into a fragile, rhythmic peace. The late autumn chill had turned the leaves of the maple trees into brilliant shades of crimson and burnt orange. Sloan’s studio in the renovated timber barn was fully operational, lined with canvases, high-powered restoration lamps, and antique furniture waiting for her expert touch.
Griffin had taken over the daily morning routine, flipping blueberry pancakes for Hazel while quizzing Iris on her chess openings. To the outside world, Griffin Drake was a retired titan enjoying his billions. But inside, he remained vigilant, installing state-of-the-art security systems around the property—silent motion sensors, thermal cameras, and a private security team patrolling the perimeter.
It was a Tuesday afternoon when the peace shattered again.
Sloan was alone in the barn studio, applying a delicate coat of varnish to a seventeenth-century Dutch oil painting. The soft jazz music on her radio was interrupted by the sudden, loud crunch of tires on the gravel driveway outside.
She paused, setting her brush down. Griffin had taken the girls into town to buy autumn boots and supplies for school. No deliveries were scheduled.
Sloan walked to the small glass window of the barn and peeked outside. A sleek, matte-black sedan with heavily tinted windows and no license plates was idling near the edge of the property line, just outside the wooden gate.
Her pulse accelerated. Ever since the night near the docks with Genevieve, her nerves were on edge.
Sloan reached into her pocket, gripping her phone to dial Griffin. Before her thumb hit the screen, the passenger door of the black sedan opened.
A tall man in a sharp grey suit stepped out. He wore dark sunglasses, but his facial structure was instantly recognizable. He had a strong, sharp jawline, light brown hair styled impeccably, and a posture that radiated aristocratic arrogance.
Julian Mercer. Genevieve’s older brother.
Julian had been managing Mercer Holdings' international assets in Europe for the past six years, completely detached from the scandal that had landed his sister in prison and bankrupted his father.
Sloan’s heart hammered against her ribs. She unlocked the heavy timber door of the barn and stepped out into the crisp autumn air, keeping her phone held firmly at her side.
"You're on private property, Mr. Mercer," Sloan called out, her voice loud and steady despite the fear gnawing at her stomach.
Julian stopped ten feet away from her, pulling off his sunglasses. His eyes were a pale, icy blue—uncannily similar to Genevieve’s, but entirely devoid of his sister’s chaotic hysteria. Julian’s gaze was cold, calculated, and sharp as a scalpel.
"Miss Spencer," Julian said, his voice smooth and cultured, carrying a subtle European accent. "I apologize for the unannounced intrusion. The gates were open."
"The gates were closed," Sloan corrected sharply. "You bypassed the electronic sensor."
A faint, mocking smile touched Julian’s lips. "A minor security oversight on Griffin’s part. He always was overly reliant on technology rather than human discretion."
"State your business and get off my land," Sloan demanded, her back straightening.
Julian folded his sunglasses and placed them into his breast pocket. "I returned from Zurich yesterday. My sister is currently residing in a state penitentiary, my father is bedridden following a massive stroke, and my family name has been dragged through the mud by the press."
"Your sister kidnapped my eight-year-old daughters at knifepoint," Sloan snapped, her eyes flashing with fury. "She belongs in prison. And your father bankrupted his own company through illegal insider trading."
"Genevieve is a foolish, emotional creature," Julian said dismissively, taking a slow step toward her. "She acted out of petty revenge. I, however, am a businessman, Miss Spencer. Griffin Drake launched a hostile takeover that wiped out sixty percent of my family's net worth in a single morning."
"Griffin acted to protect us!"
"Griffin acted out of vengeance," Julian countered, his tone dropping an octave, becoming dangerously cold. "And in doing so, he created a war he cannot win simply by hiding behind Bainbridge Island’s trees."
Julian pulled an ivory envelope from his jacket and held it out. "I am launching a formal lawsuit in the federal appellate court to contest the Drake Systems takeover on grounds of predatory market manipulation. But more importantly, my legal team has filed a petition regarding the validity of Griffin’s board authority during the transaction."
Sloan didn't take the envelope. "Griffin will destroy you in court, Julian. Just like he destroyed Genevieve."
Julian chuckled softly, a chilling, soundless laugh. "Griffin is blinded by his newfound domestic bliss, Miss Spencer. He thinks he can be a cozy family man and a corporate monarch at the same time. He is mistaken."
Julian stepped closer, his icy eyes locking onto hers. "Tell Griffin that Julian Mercer has returned to Seattle. Tell him the war isn't over—it has simply changed hands."
Before Sloan could respond, the deep, guttural roar of a high-powered engine echoed down the driveway.
Griffin’s Maybach tore around the bend, spraying gravel as it screeched to a halt between Julian’s sedan and the barn.
The driver's door slammed open. Griffin stepped out, his face a mask of pure, murderous rage. He didn't say a word. He marched across the gravel, grabbed Julian by the lapels of his grey suit, and slammed him violently against the side of the black sedan.
"Griffin!" Sloan cried out.
"Give me one reason," Griffin growled, his face inches from Julian’s, his body vibrating with lethal tension. "Give me one reason not to break your neck right here on my driveway."
Julian gasped for air under Griffin’s crushing grip, but his pale blue eyes remained infuriatingly calm. "Touch me, Drake... and my attorneys file assault charges before the sun sets. The press will love it. 'The Ruthless Billionaire Strikes Again.'"
Griffin’s grip tightened until Julian’s face turned red. "You stay away from my woman. You stay away from my daughters. If I see your car within five miles of this island again, Julian, I won't use lawyers. I'll make sure you disappear."
Griffin threw Julian sideways against the car hood.
Julian straightened his suit jacket, coughing slightly, though a cold, sinister grin remained on his face. "Welcome back to the arena, Griffin. Let's see how well you play when the stakes are everything you love."
Julian slipped into his car, slammed the door, and backed out of the driveway at high speed.

Griffin stood in the driveway, his chest heaving, his fists clenched so tight his skin was white. He turned to Sloan, his emerald eyes wide with panicked concern. "Did he touch you? Did he say anything to you?"
Sloan ran to him, wrapping her arms around his waist. "I'm okay. I'm okay, Griffin. But he’s not like Genevieve. He’s smart. And he’s coming for everything you have."
