Chapter 5 - The Trap is Set

At eight o'clock sharp, the glass door of Arthur Pendelton’s executive conference room swung open.

Evan looked like a ghost of the man who had walked into the boardroom forty-eight hours ago. He was wearing a cheap, rumpled button-down shirt he had clearly bought at a gas station convenience store. His eyes were hollow, rimmed with red, and his hands shook uncontrollable as he clutched a paper cup of stale coffee.

When his eyes met mine, he flinched, as if physical light hurt him.

"Claire..." he croaked, taking a hesitant step into the room. "Marcus told me... he said you know about Sabrina. About Vanguard."

"Sit down, Evan," I said flatly, sitting at the head of the long glass table.

Evan sank into a leather chair across from me, his shoulders slumped, his head hanging low. "I didn't know, Claire. I swear to God on Noah’s soul, I didn't know she was working for Vanguard! She told me... she told me we were building a future where I wouldn't have to feel like a puppet in your family's shadow! She made me feel... powerful."

"You were never powerful, Evan," I said, my tone devoid of anger, which made it all the more terrifying. "You were convenient. You were a weak, insecure man who was easily swayed by cheap flattery and an attractive face. And while you were feeling 'powerful' in a luxury hotel room, your real family was destroyed."

Evan buried his face in his hands, a jagged, broken sob escaping his chest. "I know... Oh God, Claire, I know! I can't sleep. Every time I close my eyes, I see Noah’s face. I see that text message... 11:47 p.m. I read it, Claire. I read it and I thought... I thought you were just trying to ruin my night. I thought you were exaggerating to make me come home... I killed my own son..."

"You did," I agreed coldly. "And you will carry that blood on your hands until the day you die. No court, no apology, and no amount of tears will ever cleanse you of that."

Evan wept openly, his body shaking with deep, wracking sobs. Arthur Pendelton and Marcus Vance stood silently against the wall, watching the broken executive mourn the life he had so recklessly thrown away.

"If you want even a sliver of redemption, Evan," I continued, leaning across the table, "you are going to help me crush Vanguard and tear Sabrina Cole’s life into pieces."

Evan wiped his face with the sleeve of his shirt, looking up at me through bloodshot eyes. "Anything. I'll do anything, Claire. I'll go to prison. I'll sign over every piece of property, every stock certificate... just tell me what to do."

"Sabrina thinks she has successfully scrubbed her digital trail and delivered the proprietary algorithm to Vanguard’s CEO, Victor Thorne," I said, pulling up a digital architecture diagram on the wall monitor. "What she doesn't know is that Bennett Meridian’s core software contains an embedded, dormant kill-switch code—a cryptographic poison pill that my grandfather insisted on writing into the source code when the firm went digital."

Arthur stepped forward, tapping the screen. "This kill-switch, known as the 'Meridian Protocol,' is designed to execute an irreversible encryption cascade if the source code is executed on an unauthorized server network. However, to trigger the protocol, we need direct administrative authentication from the master device that exported the data."

"Sabrina’s corporate laptop," Evan realized, his voice trembling. "She took it with her when she fled."

"She didn't flee far," I said. "Our private investigators tracked her to a private estate in Wrightsville Beach. The property is registered to a corporate entity owned directly by Victor Thorne. She is currently preparing to transfer the final decryption keys to Vanguard’s engineering team tomorrow morning at ten o'clock during a private demonstration at Vanguard’s regional headquarters in Charlotte."

"Victor Thorne is holding a private press conference right after the demonstration," Arthur added. "He intends to announce Vanguard’s new logistics platform, effectively attempting to corner the market and bankrupt Bennett Meridian."

I looked directly into Evan’s eyes. "You are going to call Sabrina. You are going to tell her that you managed to bypass the court-ordered asset freeze on one of your secondary offshore accounts. You are going to tell her that you have ten million dollars in liquid cash sitting in a Swiss account, but you need her master administrative key to authorize the transfer before the legal team completely seals the access."

Evan swallowed hard. "She won't believe me. She knows I’m ruined."

"She will believe you because greed is her only drive," I said. "And because you are going to offer her fifty percent of that ten million dollars if she meets you tonight at the marina in Wrightsville Beach to sign the transfer documents."

"And when she shows up?" Evan asked.

"When she shows up," I said, a dark, dangerous smile spreading across my face, "she won't be meeting a desperate lover with five million dollars. She will be meeting federal agents from the Department of Justice, armed with a warrant for corporate espionage, wire fraud, and grand theft."

Evan looked at me, a mixture of awe and absolute terror in his eyes. He realized then, with complete clarity, that the quiet, reserved woman he had married—the woman he thought he could easily manipulate and sideline—was a master strategist who was about to systematically obliterate everyone who had crossed her.

"Give me the phone," Evan said softly.

Arthur handed Evan a pre-configured, untraceable burner phone. Evan took a deep breath, dialed the number he knew by heart, and placed the phone to his ear.

The room was deathly quiet as the line rang once, twice, three times.

"Evan?" Sabrina’s voice came through the speaker, cold, sharp, and entirely devoid of the warmth she had displayed when she was spending his money. "Why are you calling this number? I told you we can't be in contact."

"Sabrina, listen to me," Evan said, his voice instantly morphing into the tone of a desperate, panicked man—a tone that required zero acting on his part. "Claire froze everything, but she missed the Zurich account. I have ten million dollars sitting in a private vault, but the bank requires the dual-authentication key from the Bennett Meridian administrative portal to release the wire transfer!"

There was a long pause on the other end of the line. We could hear the faint sound of ocean waves in the background.

"Ten million?" Sabrina asked, her voice instantly shifting, the sharp edge softening into calculating curiosity.

"Yes! Ten million!" Evan pleaded. "I can get us out of the country tonight! We can go to Dubai, to South America... anywhere! But I need that key, Sabrina. Half of it is yours if you meet me at the Wrightsville Beach marina at midnight. Just bring your corporate laptop and the physical encryption key."

Another long, agonizing silence filled the boardroom. I watched Evan’s face as he waited for her response, his pulse visibly hammering in his neck.

"Midnight," Sabrina finally said. "If you are playing me, Evan, I swear to God I will give Victor Thorne everything he needs to make sure you rot in prison for the rest of your life."

"I'm not playing you, Sabrina," Evan said, tears again filling his eyes. "I have nothing left except you."

"Midnight," she repeated, and hung up.

Evan lowered the phone, looking up at me with hollow, exhausted eyes. "It's done."

"Good," I said, standing up and closing my laptop. "Now, gentlemen, let's go set up the trap."
