Chapter 3 - The Society Gala

Z

The Bellevue Grand Ballroom was a glittering monument to high-society vanity. Crystal chandeliers hung like frozen waterfalls from the vaulted ceiling, casting a warm, golden glow over hundreds of wealthy patrons dressed in tuxedos and designer gowns. Soft classical music played from a string quartet in the corner, mingling with the ambient chatter of champagne glasses clinking and fake, polite laughter.

At the center of it all was Eleanor Montgomery.

She stood near the grand stage, wearing an emerald green velvet gown that practically screamed old money. Beside her was Chloe, glowing with unearned confidence, the stolen $6,500 sapphire pendant resting prominently against her collarbone. Greg stood half a step behind them, looking perpetually uncomfortable in his fitted tuxedo, holding a glass of scotch that he was drinking far too quickly.

Tonight was the annual Autumn Heritage Gala—the crown jewel of Eleanor’s social calendar. She was the chairperson of the fundraising committee, and in less than an hour, she was scheduled to receive a lifetime achievement award for her charitable work in the city.

They thought I was home crying. They thought I was a broken, defeated woman hiding out at her parents' house, waiting for Greg to offer her a pitiful settlement.

They were wrong.

The heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.

I stepped into the hall, my heels clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor. I was wearing a floor-length, backless crimson dress that clung to every curve—a dress I had purchased specifically for this night. My hair was styled in a sleek, high chignon, and my red lipstick matched the fierce, burning composure in my eyes.

Beside me walked Arthur Vance, wearing a sharp charcoal suit, carrying a sleek leather briefcase. And behind us walked two uniformed county sheriff’s deputies.

The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. Heads turned. Whispers rippled through the crowd like a rising tide.

"Is that... Jessica?" a woman in diamonds whispered to her husband as I glided past.

"She looks incredible... but why are the police here?" another voice murmured.

Eleanor caught sight of me first. Her eyes widened in momentary shock before her face hardened into a mask of pure, regal disgust. She whispered something to Greg and Chloe, who both turned around. Greg’s face went completely ash-white; he nearly dropped his crystal tumbler onto the floor.

"Jessica?" Greg gasped, stumbling forward a step. "What... what are you doing here? You can't be here!"

"Why not, Greg?" I asked, my voice carrying clearly over the hushed room. "It’s a charitable evening. And I’m feeling remarkably generous tonight."

Eleanor stepped forward, inserting herself like a human shield between me and her children. She raised her chin, her eyes flashing with pure malice.

"You have made a grave mistake coming here, Jessica," Eleanor sneered under her breath, keeping her voice low so the surrounding guests couldn't hear. "You are causing a scene. Leave now before I have security throw you out like the low-class trash you are."

"Oh, security won't be touching me tonight, Eleanor," I replied smoothly, smiling with absolute icy confidence. "In fact, the officers behind me aren't here for me at all."

Arthur stepped forward, unzipping his briefcase with a deliberate, audible slide. He pulled out a thick stack of legal documents wrapped in official county seals.

"Eleanor Montgomery," Arthur said loudly, his booming lawyer's voice echoing across the silent ballroom. "You are hereby served with a civil lawsuit for bank fraud, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, and felony extortion."

Gasps erupted across the room. Cell phones immediately flew out of pockets as high-society guests began recording the spectacle.

Eleanor’s face flushed a deep, ugly crimson. "This is outrage! This is absurd slander! Get these people out of my sight!"

"And Chloe Montgomery," Arthur continued, completely ignoring her outburst as he handed a second thick folder directly to my sister-in-law. "You are served with a court summons regarding the illegal conversion of marital assets, tax evasion through shell corporations, and civil fraud related to The Golden Spoon Catering."

Chloe’s hand shook as she was forced to take the papers. "This... this is crazy! Greg, do something!"

Greg looked like he was going to vomit. "Jess... please, not here. We can talk about this privately—"

"We are past talking, Greg," I interrupted, staring directly into the eyes of the man I had spent eleven years loving. "You stole sixty thousand dollars from our children's college funds to pay off the victims of Chloe's bankrupt, illegal catering company. You took out an unauthorized second mortgage on our home to pay off your own personal debts. And worst of all, you helped your mother forge my signature to steal my property rights while you tricked me into leaving the state."

The ballroom descended into utter chaos. High-society matriarchs gasped in horror, whispering frantically behind their silk fans. Prominent businessmen shifted away from Eleanor, seeking to distance themselves from the radioactive scandal unfolding in real-time.

"You lying little bitch!" Chloe shrieked, loseing her composure entirely. She lunged toward me, her fingernails clawing at the air. "You're trying to ruin our family!"

Before she could reach me, one of the sheriff's deputies stepped in, firmly catching Chloe by the arm and pushing her back.

"Ma'am, keep your hands to yourself," the deputy warned sternly.

I stepped closer to Chloe, reaching out my hand. My fingers delicately brushed against the heavy sapphire hanging around her neck. Chloe flinched, but she couldn't move away.

"This pendant," I said softly, my voice echoing in the dead silence of the room. "Bought with six thousand five hundred dollars stolen from my joint account, while my children's sports fees were marked as 'overdue'. It looks far better on paper than it does on you, Chloe."

With a swift, practiced motion, I unhooked the clasp from behind her neck and pulled the necklace free.

"That's theft!" Eleanor screamed, her aristocratic composure completely shattered. "Officer, arrest her! She just stole my daughter's necklace!"

Arthur produced a stamped court order from his folder and held it up to the deputy. "This asset was purchased using stolen marital funds under an active financial restraining order. It is officially seized as evidence in a fraud investigation."

The deputy nodded. "It's legal, ma'am."

Eleanor looked around the ballroom, realizing for the very first time in her life that her money, her status, and her arrogant glare could not save her. The people she had spent decades looking down upon were now staring at her with disgust and amusement. Her empire of lies was crumbling in front of the very society she lived to impress.

Greg sank into a nearby chair, burying his face in his hands, trembling violently.

I placed the sapphire pendant into Arthur’s velvet-lined pouch. Then, I turned to face Eleanor, leaning in so close she could smell my perfume.

"Enjoy your lifetime achievement award, Eleanor," I whispered, my voice dripping with lethal satisfaction. "Because tomorrow morning, the district attorney receives the audio recording of you extorting Sarah Jenkins. You aren't just going to lose your social standing. You are going to prison."

I turned on my heel, my crimson dress sweeping gracefully against the floor, and walked out of the Bellevue Grand Ballroom, leaving the shattered remnants of the Montgomery family to drown in their own shame.
