Chapter 8 - The Counter-Offensive

The emergency restraining order was served to Rachel at 11:00 p.m. that night. According to Mark’s cousin, who stayed in touch with Rachel’s husband, David, the scene at their house was catastrophic. When the officers served the papers, David finally saw the gala video for the first time.
Realizing the extent of his wife’s deceit and the fact that she had endangered their children and brought police to their doorstep, David packed his bags, took the three kids, and left to stay at a hotel, announcing he was retaining a divorce lawyer.
Rachel had lost her family, her husband, her social circle, and her access to Mom. She was isolated, cornered, and entirely ruined.
And that made her infinitely more dangerous.
On Monday morning, Eleanor Vance called us into her office for an urgent strategy session.
"Richard has officially filed his response to Mark’s corporate lawsuit," Eleanor said, sliding a thick file across her desk. "He’s claiming Mark was terminated for cause, citing 'financial irregularities' in Mark’s regional development accounting."
Mark scoffed loudly. "Financial irregularities? I doubled the regional revenue last quarter! Every audit I’ve ever conducted was flawless!"
"It’s a bluff," Eleanor agreed calm. "He’s trying to manufacture a criminal investigation to tie you up in legal fees and force you to drop the harassment cases against Rachel. It’s classic corporate retaliation. But Richard made a massive mistake."
"What mistake?" I asked.
Eleanor smiled, a sharp, predatory look. "When Richard filed those accounting documents in court, he opened his corporate books to discovery. My financial forensic team took a preliminary look at the filings he submitted to justify your termination. Mark... your father has been funneling company funds into Rachel’s personal accounts for three years to cover her massive credit card debts."
Mark sat frozen. "What?"
"Over three hundred thousand dollars," Eleanor revealed, tapping a paper. "Richard was embezzling from his own investors to keep Rachel afloat while she pretended to be a wealthy suburban mom. He didn't just cover for her childcare exploitation—he was funding her entire lifestyle using investor capital."
The pieces of the puzzle fell into place with terrifying clarity.
Rachel wasn't just dropping the kids off at Mom’s house so she could go to the spa—she was hiding her rampant spending, her secret debt, and her unraveling life. Richard had been enabling her financially while exploiting Mom’s physical labor to keep the entire illusion from collapsing.
"If the investors find out about this," Mark said slowly, "Richard goes to federal prison."
"Precisely," Eleanor said. "We have enough hard evidence right now to file a criminal referral with the state prosecutor’s office for corporate fraud."
"Do it," I said instantly.
Mark held up a hand, thinking carefully. He looked at his hands, weighing the heavy moral weight of destroying his own father.
"Mark," I said softly, looking into his eyes. "He tried to ruin your career. He let Rachel abuse your mother. He tried to frame you for financial crimes today. He chose his pride over your family long ago."
Mark took a deep breath, his chest expanding, and then exhaled slowly. The conflict in his eyes hardened into pure steel.
"File it, Eleanor," Mark said firmly. "Send the complete audit to the board of directors and the state prosecutor."
"Consider it done," Eleanor replied.
We left the attorney’s office feeling a strange sense of quiet before the storm. The legal machinery was moving. The truth was about to detonate Richard’s empire.
As we drove back to our house, my phone chimed. It was a text from an unknown number.
I opened it. It was a photo of our front door, taken from the street outside our house.
Attached was a single message from Rachel:
“You took everything from me. Now I take everything from you.”
May you like
I gasped, showing the screen to Mark. "She’s outside our house!"
Mark slammed his foot on the accelerator, his knuckles turning white on the steering wheel as the truck surged forward into traffic.
