Chapter 5 - The Feast of Poison

The silence in the room was absolute. The sound of water dripping from the counter onto the shattered glass was the only noise breaking the heavy tension.

"You... you know each other?" Kyle stammered, looking back and forth between his wife and Ethan with total bewilderment.

"Know each other?" Ethan repeated, taking a step toward the dining table and placing his briefcase neatly on a empty chair. "You could say that. Lauren and I go back a few years."

Lauren’s hands were shaking uncontrollably. She instinctively reached out to grab the edge of the granite counter to keep herself upright. "Ethan... what are you doing here?" she choked out, her voice barely a whisper.

"I'm here for dinner, of course," Ethan replied cheerfully, pulling out a chair for me before taking his own seat. "Rachel was kind enough to invite me to a family gathering. Isn't that right, Rachel?"

"That's right," I said, taking my seat at the head of the table. "Mom, don't worry about the glass. Kyle, why don't you help Lauren clean that up so we can all sit down and eat?"

Kyle looked utterly lost, but he grabbed a broom from the pantry and began sweeping up the glass while Lauren stood frozen, her eyes glued to Ethan as if he were a ghost that had returned to haunt her.

"Sit down, Lauren," I said, my tone dripping with false sweetness. "The food is getting cold."

Reluctantly, moving like a mechanical doll, Lauren sat down across from Ethan. Her confident, arrogant posture from ten minutes ago had completely vanished. She looked small, panicked, and trapped.

Mom brought the roasted chicken to the table, her eyes darting nervously between us. She could feel the storm brewing, even if she didn't yet understand its origin.

"So, Lauren," Ethan began, unfolding his napkin and placing it neatly across his lap. "Kyle was just telling me before you came in that you've been working in financial consulting lately. That's fascinating. The last time we spoke, you were working in high-end fraud."

Kyle dropped his fork onto his plate with a loud clatter. "Excuse me? What did you just say?"

"Kyle, don't listen to him!" Lauren shrieked, her voice cracking with desperation. "He's insane! He's an ex-boyfriend from years ago who stalked me! Rachel, where did you find this man? He's dangerous!"

"Stalked you?" Ethan chuckled softly, taking a calm sip of his water. "Is that what you told Kyle? Is that the same story you used when you took five thousand dollars from my bank account three weeks before our wedding date?"

Mom gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Five thousand dollars?"

"Wait a minute," Kyle said, his brow furrowing as he stood up from his chair. "What wedding date? Lauren, what is he talking about?"

"He's lying!" Lauren yelled, her face turning red as tears of frustration welled in her eyes. "Kyle, please, let's just leave! We don't have to stay here and be insulted!"

"Nobody is leaving," I said, my voice cutting through the panic like a blade. I didn't raise my voice; I didn't need to. The quiet authority in my tone anchored everyone to their seats.

I reached into my purse and pulled out my phone, laying it face up on the wooden table.

"Yesterday morning, Lauren, my mother’s refrigerator died," I said, looking directly into her wide, panicked eyes. "She spent years saving five thousand dollars for emergencies. Money she earned through hard labor, sitting quietly in her account so she would never have to ask anyone for help. And you took every single penny."

"I borrowed it!" Lauren sobbed defensively. "I had a car emergency! I told Diane I would pay her back!"

"You didn't have a car emergency, Lauren," Ethan interrupted smoothly. He reached over, unlatched his leather briefcase, and pulled out a thick stack of printed financial documents. "Your vehicle registration shows no mechanics' liens or repair bills in the past twelve months. What you did have was a eight-hundred-dollar transaction at a boutique store yesterday morning, and a four-thousand-dollar transfer to pay off an overdue credit line."

Ethan slid the papers across the polished wood until they rested right in front of Kyle.

"Take a look, Kyle," Ethan said softly. "That's your wife's financial history. And attached to it is the fraud report I filed against her two years ago under her real maiden name."

Kyle stared at the papers. His hands trembled as he picked them up, his eyes scanning the numbers, the dates, and the legal stamps. The color drained completely from his face as the reality of his marriage cracked open before him.
