Chapter 5 - THE SECOND FRONT

The sudden pounding on the wooden door echoed through the foyer, shattering the icy standoff between Daniel and me.
Daniel frowned, turning toward the door. "Who the hell is that at this hour?"
He pulled the door open, keeping his body positioned to block the threshold. Standing on our porch, soaked from the torrential downpour, were two uniformed officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, accompanied by a woman in a sharp grey business suit holding a leather briefcase.
"Daniel Vance?" the lead officer asked, inspecting a document on his clipboard.
"Yes," Daniel replied, his voice instantly regaining its polite, composed facade. "Officer, what's going on?"
"I am Special Agent Sarah Lin from the North Carolina Department of Financial Crime Operations," the woman in the suit declared, stepping forward and flashing a badge. "We are executing a search warrant for this premises, as well as a seizure order for all electronic devices, financial records, and personal ledgers associated with Vance Consulting LLC."
Daniel’s face drained of color. "A search warrant? On what grounds? My wife and I are the primary victims in an active prosecution in Buncombe County!"
"This warrant isn't regarding your wife's parents, Mr. Vance," Agent Lin replied coldly, pulling a signed federal document from her folder. "This warrant was issued following a formal deposition delivered three hours ago by Richard Vance’s lead defense council."
I stepped around Daniel, clutching my swollen stomach. "What deposition?"
Agent Lin looked at me, her expression softening slightly with concern. "Mrs. Vance, your father, Richard Vance, provided federal prosecutors with audio recordings and bank transfers implicating your husband, Daniel Vance, in an ongoing corporate embezzlement scheme involving shell corporations tied to the Lake Lure property."
I gasped, looking at Daniel. "What?!"
"It's a lie!" Daniel shouted, his composure shattering completely. "Richard is framing me to reduce his own sentence! He’s a desperate criminal who lost his bail hearing today!"
"We have bank records showing over eight hundred thousand dollars transferred from your consulting firm into an offshore account registered in the Cayman Islands under the name 'Vance Heritage Trust,'" Agent Lin stated calmly. "An account that was co-created using your wife's forged identity, dated four months ago."
The world seemed to spin upside down. I fell back against the hallway wall, my hand pressed hard against my heart.
My forged identity.
It hadn't just been my father.
While my father was trying to force me to transfer the lake house to Brittany, my husband—the man I slept next to every night, the man who held my hand while I cried—had been using my name and credit to launder money through shell accounts, preparing to drain the assets the moment my grandmother's estate settled.
"Clara, look at me!" Daniel turned to me, his eyes wide with frantic desperation, grabbing my shoulders. "They set me up! Your father forged my name on those Cayman accounts! You have to believe me!"
"Don't touch her, Mr. Vance," the police officer ordered, stepping inside the house and placing a hand on his taser. "Step away from your wife immediately."
"Clara! Tell them!" Daniel pleaded as the second officer stepped forward, grabbing his arm and pulling him back. "I did everything for us! I was trying to save us from your toxic family!"
"Save us?" I whispered, tears spilling down my cheeks, my voice trembling with a mix of heartbroken grief and burning fury. "You were building a cage for me. Both of you were."
"Mr. Vance, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, identity theft, and money laundering," Agent Lin announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt.
"No! Wait! Call Arthur Sterling! Call my lawyer!" Daniel screamed as the officers forced his arms behind his back, the metallic click of the cuffs sounding like a death knell in the quiet hallway.
As they escorted a thrashing, screaming Daniel out into the pouring rain toward a marked police cruiser, Agent Lin turned to me, her eyes filled with genuine pity.
"Mrs. Vance, we have an ambulance waiting down the street to take you to Charlotte Memorial Hospital. Given your high-risk pregnancy and the severe stress of these events, we need to ensure you and your baby are safe."
"My baby..." I murmured, clutching my abdomen as a sharp, sudden pain radiated across my lower back.
It wasn't a mild cramp like the ones in the forest.
It was a deep, crushing contraction that pulled the breath right out of my lungs.
"Ah!" I gasped, dropping to my knees on the hardwood floor.
"Mrs. Vance!" Agent Lin rushed forward, catching me before I hit the floor completely. "Medic! We need paramedics inside now!"
Within seconds, two EMTs burst through the front door with a gurney. Through a haze of blinding pain and streaming tears, I felt them lift me onto the stretcher. The bright red lights of the ambulance flashed through the rain-soaked windows, painting the walls of my home in crimson shadows.
As they wheeled me out into the cold night air, the sky opened up with a deafening crack of thunder.
My parents were in a jail cell in Buncombe County.

My husband was in the back of a police cruiser in handcuffs.
And I was in active labor, thirty-four weeks pregnant, completely and utterly alone in the world.
