Chapter 2 - The Fallout

The glow of the lake lodge had faded into the quiet routine of a Chicago winter, but for Blackwood Forensic Partners, the work never stopped. Two weeks after Thanksgiving, I sat at the executive desk on the top floor of the Blackwood building, watching the sleet hit the glass. The city was a canvas of gray and white, cold and unforgiving. Just the way I liked it.
My interoffice phone buzzed. It was Sarah, my chief of staff.
"Emma, Mark is on line one. He says it’s urgent—and it’s not about the civil suits."
I picked up the receiver. "Mark. What’s happened?"
"Emma, we’ve got a situation," Mark’s voice was clipped, stripped of its usual legal calm. "Your father’s defense attorney just filed a motion for emergency bail based on medical grounds. But that’s not the main issue. Someone paid his bail, and the money came from an offshore entity registered in the Cayman Islands—Aegis Holdings."
I frowned, my pen hovering over a forensic audit report. "Aegis Holdings? That’s an offshore vehicle tied to Harrison Croft."
"Exactly," Mark said softly. "The man Blackwood exposed last year for the state procurement fraud. The guy who lost ninety million dollars and his freedom because of your testimony. Croft is out on appeal, Emma. And now he’s funding your father’s legal defense."
A cold thrill ran down my spine. This wasn’t just family drama anymore. This was toxic vengeance. Dad hadn’t just accepted help; he had aligned himself with the single most dangerous enemy I had made in my professional career.
"Where is Dad now?" I asked, my voice dropping an octave.
"He was released two hours ago. And Emma... Vanessa was seen entering Harrison Croft’s private residence in Gold Coast this morning."
I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second, letting the reality sink in. Vanessa wasn't just desperate; she was weaponized. Stripped of her social media clout, her rich fiancé, and her unearned luxury, she had gone looking for the one person who hated me more than she did.
"Send a security detail to my apartment, Mark. And get me everything on Aegis Holdings' recent transactions over the last seventy-two hours."
"Already on it," Mark said. "Emma... be careful. Croft doesn't play by corporate rules."
"Neither do I," I replied, and hung up.
Thirty minutes later, my office door swung open without a knock. Daniel Mercer walked in. He looked tired, the shadows under his eyes telling a story of sleepless nights, but his stance was firm. Since stepping off the Blackwood account, he had maintained a respectful distance, but today, his expression carried an edge of deep concern.
"You heard about Croft," Daniel said, closing the door behind him.
"Mark told me," I said, leaning back in my leather chair. "Why are you here, Daniel?"
"Because Halcyon Capital just received an anonymous whistle-blower report targeting Blackwood," Daniel said, stepping forward and laying a thick manila folder on my desk. "It alleges that your firm falsified the evidence used to indict Croft last year. The claim states that you cooked the books to build your reputation."
I looked down at the document. The signature at the bottom of the affidavits was notarized, but the name attached to the sworn statement made my blood run cold.
Witness: Vanessa Lawson.
"She signed a false affidavit," I whispered, a dark chuckle escaping my lips. "She's claiming she worked as an administrative assistant at Blackwood and witnessed me altering the digital ledgers."
"It’s ridiculous, Emma," Daniel said fiercely. "She never worked here. Anyone with a brain knows that. But Croft’s lawyers are using this to file for a retrial and freeze Blackwood’s asset accounts pending an investigation."
"They're trying to bleed me," I said, the picture coming into sharp focus. "Croft knows he can't win a legal battle on merit. So he's using my family’s greed and hatred to force a settlement, destroy my firm’s credibility, and ruin me financially."
"What are you going to do?" Daniel asked.
I stood up, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. The city below was bustling, oblivious to the war taking place in the corporate stratosphere.
"Vanessa thinks she’s playing chess," I said softly, staring at my reflection in the dark glass. "She thinks because she shared my blood, she understands how I think. But she forgot one critical detail."
I turned back to Daniel, my eyes locked onto his.
"She’s an amateur. And I do this for a living."
My phone rang again. It was a restricted number. I put it on speaker.
"Emma," a voice rasped through the speaker. It was smooth, refined, and drenched in malice. Harrison Croft. "I believe you’ve received my little holiday greeting."
"Harrison," I replied calmly. "I see you’re still wasting money on lost causes."
"A daughter’s testimony against her sister is quite compelling to a jury, my dear," Croft chuckled softly. "Your father is currently enjoying a very fine scotch in my parlor. Your mother is weeping with gratitude. And Vanessa... well, Vanessa is quite eager to ensure you pay for what you’ve done to her 'reputation.'"
"They are parasites, Harrison. You’re adopting trash."
"They are your trash, Emma. And they hold the key to my freedom. Withdraw your expert testimony from the state prosecutor’s file by Friday, or I will leak these affidavits to the Wall Street Journal. Blackwood will be ruined before the truth ever sees a courtroom."
"Is that a threat?"
"It’s an ultimatum. You have three days."
The line went dead.

Daniel took a step closer, his hands clenched into fists. "We can fight this in court, Emma. I'll testify. I'll bring Halcyon's legal team."
"No," I said, picking up my coat. "Croft wants a street fight. It's time I gave him one."
