Chapter 4: The Letter She Never Meant Me to Read

Three years passed.

Lily was thriving.

She laughed more. She made friends. She even joined her school's art club, something she had once been too terrified to try.

Then one rainy afternoon, a thick envelope arrived with no return address.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

It was from Victoria.

Dear Lily,

I know you'll never forgive me.

But there's something your father never told you.

I wasn't always the monster you remember...

I almost threw it into the fireplace.

But Lily gently stopped me.

"I want to know."

We read it together.

Victoria claimed someone had been blackmailing her during our marriage. She insisted she had owed hundreds of thousands of dollars to dangerous people.

She admitted abusing Lily...

But insisted she had also been manipulated.

I wanted to dismiss every word.

Until the final page.

She included photocopies of bank transfers.

Payments I had never seen.

Someone had been draining my business accounts for nearly a year.

May you like

And the signature...

looked exactly like mine.
