Chapter 7 - THE EXPANDING AUDITZ

While the Vance family was devouring itself in Yonkers, my life was moving forward with quiet, unstoppable momentum.

With the burden of the Manhattan rent and Arthur’s hidden debts lifted from my shoulders, my financial situation transformed almost overnight. I moved into a sunlit, high-ceilinged loft in Long Island City with sweeping views of the East River and the Manhattan skyline—a skyline that no longer represented my emotional imprisonment, but my complete independence.

I redirected my focus toward my career. My research team at the hospital secured a major federal grant for clinical trials in targeted cancer therapies. My work was published in a prestigious medical journal, bringing both professional acclaim and substantial consulting opportunities with global pharmaceutical firms.

However, the legal resolution of my marriage was far from over. Priya was not content with simply securing a divorce; she was determined to audit every single dollar that had passed through Arthur's hands during our twelve years of marriage.

"Sarah, look at this," Priya said during an afternoon meeting at her Midtown office. She pushed a set of forensic accounting spreadsheets across her desk.

I scanned the rows of numbers. "What am I looking at?"

"During the forensic audit of Arthur's corporate accounts, we discovered something very interesting," Priya explained, leaning forward. "Arthur wasn't just losing money on bad business investments. Between 2020 and 2023, he transferred over $140,000 from his corporate accounts directly into a private wealth management trust held under Eleanor Vance's name."

I frowned. "Eleanor's trust? Where did that money come from?"

"It came from money you deposited into your joint account for 'family expenses,'" Priya revealed, her eyes gleaming with professional satisfaction. "You were writing checks to cover household supplies, medical insurance, and utility bills. Arthur was taking those funds, depositing them into his failing company to keep the lights on, and then siphoning off a percentage to funnel into his mother's private account in Riverdale."

I sat back, absorbing the weight of the discovery. "It was financial embezzlement."

"Precisely," Priya said. "He was committing spousal conversion and tax fraud. Eleanor wasn't just a passive beneficiary of your generosity; she was actively receiving funneled assets while knowing her son was insolvent. That trust was her secret safety net—the money she planned to live on once Arthur's company completely collapsed."

"Does Arthur know you found this?" I asked.

"He does now," Priya smiled coldly. "I served his bankruptcy attorney with an intent to file a civil recovery action this morning. If Eleanor doesn't surrender the full $140,000 to be applied against your property settlement, we will file formal criminal charges with the District Attorney's financial crimes unit."

An hour later, in a small law office in White Plains, Arthur and Eleanor sat across from their lawyer, Harrison Vance.

"Is this true, Eleanor?" Harrison Vance asked, looking over his half-moon spectacles at the elderly woman. "Did you accept direct wire transfers from your son's corporate accounts while his company was under federal tax review?"

Eleanor sat stiffly, her purse held tightly in her lap. She looked smaller now, stripped of her designer wardrobe, wearing a simple cardigan that showed slight wear at the cuffs.

"It was family money," Eleanor insisted defensively. "My late husband established our family's financial foundation. Arthur was simply returning what was rightfully mine."

"It wasn't your husband's money, Mother!" Arthur shouted, putting his head in his hands. "It was Sarah's money! I took the funds she gave me for our living expenses and transferred them to your trust so you could pay your private medical fees and membership dues!"

"You offered it to me!" Eleanor protested.

"Because you demanded it!" Arthur cried. "Every month you complained that your widow's pension wasn't enough to maintain your standard of living! You guilted me into it!"

"Gentlemen, please," the attorney interrupted sternly. "Here is the reality. Mrs. Sarah Vance's legal team has us completely cornered. If this goes to court, the judge will order an immediate freeze on the Riverdale trust. Furthermore, the IRS will be notified of undeclared income transfers. Mrs. Eleanor Vance could face personal liability for tax evasion."

Eleanor’s face turned white. "Tax evasion? I am a woman of standing! I cannot go to court!"

May you like

"Then you need to sign over the trust assets to Sarah immediately," the attorney said flatly. "It is the only way to prevent criminal charges from being filed against both of you."

Eleanor looked at Arthur, searching for a sign of defense, a spark of the loyalty she had spent decades cultivating. But Arthur sat staring blankly at the table, utterly defeated. He didn't look at her. He didn't offer a single word of comfort. The illusion had not just shattered; it was being ground into dust.
