Chapter 6 - The Last Stand of Vivian Mercer

Z
While Daniel was signing his downfall in my office, Vivian Mercer was preparing for war.
She was not a woman who went down quietly. Born into upper-crust privilege, she believed that laws and financial obligations were guidelines meant for the middle class, not for people with her lineage.
That afternoon, without warning, Vivian turned up at the exclusive private club in Midtown where Manhattan’s old-money elite gathered for lunch. She had dressed in her finest furs, applied heavy makeup to hide her sunken eyes, and brought along her long-time legal strategist, Arthur Sterling—a lawyer known for dragging out high-net-worth divorces for decades.
She called an emergency press gathering on the steps of the club, intending to paint herself as a victim of an ambitious, greedy daughter-in-law who had usurped her family's heritage.
“My fellow friends and press members,” Vivian announced into a cluster of microphones held by reporters drawn by the viral drama. “What you are witnessing is a cold, calculated assault on an established American family by an outsider who married my son for money and status!”
The reporters snapped photos rapidly, flashbulbs illuminating her desperate face.
“Emma Vance—formerly Mercer—entered our home under the guise of love,” Vivian declared, her voice trembling with theatrical emotion. “She manipulated our accounts, created fake debt structures, and has now abandoned my son after stripping our family of its legitimate wealth! She has even resorted to fabricating domestic abuse claims to ruin our good name!”
Just as Vivian was getting into her performance, a black limousine pulled up to the curb.
The rear door opened, and I stepped out, dressed in a sharp, ivory-white trouser suit, flanked by Marcus Vance and two junior associates carrying thick leather briefcases.
The media crowd instantly pivoted toward me, camera lenses swinging like tracking turrets.
“Mrs. Vance! Over here!” a reporter shouted. “Is it true you fabricated the abuse claims?”
“Is it true you liquidated Mercer Enterprises illegally?” another yelled.
I walked directly toward the steps, my expression unreadable, stopping just a few feet away from Vivian. She glared at me with pure venom, her chest heaving under her mink coat.
“You brought this on yourself, Emma,” Vivian whispered fiercely under her breath so the reporters couldn't hear. “You think you can play with the big dogs? I will destroy your career.”
“Vivian,” I said calmly, turning to address the gathered media. “I am glad you called the press today. It saves my legal team the trouble of hosting a press conference of our own.”
I signaled to Marcus, who opened a briefcase and distributed press packets to every reporter in the front row.
“What you hold in your hands,” I stated clearly, my voice projecting across the courtyard, “are certified bank statements from four major financial institutions, verified audit reports, and sworn affidavits from independent forensic accountants.”
The reporters eagerly flipped open the folders.
“These documents prove that over the last three years, Mercer Enterprises was not stripped by me—it was bankrupt before I ever married Daniel Mercer,” I explained, my tone professional and undeniable. “In fact, over $3.1 million was siphoned out of corporate emergency reserves to pay for personal luxury expenses, including unlisted offshore credit cards registered to Vivian Mercer herself.”
Vivian’s lawyer, Arthur Sterling, quickly stepped in front of her, his face turning pale as he scanned the documents handed to him by a reporter. “This... this is confidential financial information!”
“No, Mr. Sterling,” Marcus Vance chimed in smoothly. “These are public court filings submitted to the Southern District of New York an hour ago, attached to a federal bankruptcy and fraud petition.”
The reporters started whispering frantically.
“Furthermore,” I continued, looking straight into Vivian’s horrified eyes, “the claims of domestic violence are supported by raw, unedited, time-stamped video logs pulled directly from the Mercer estate’s internal security system, which have now been submitted as primary evidence in a criminal investigation against both Daniel Mercer and Vivian Mercer for assault and battery.”
Vivian gasped, clutching her chest. “You... you had no right!”
“I had every right,” I said, stepping closer to her. “You thought I was weak because I stayed quiet while I carried your debts. You mistook my patience for submission. But the truth is, Vivian, you were living off my charity. And today, the charity is closed.”
At that precise moment, two unmarked police sedans pulled up behind my limousine. Two detectives in plain clothes stepped out and walked purposefully up the steps toward Vivian.
“Vivian Mercer?” Detective Reynolds asked, producing a badge.
Vivian froze, her aristocratic air finally shattering completely. “What is the meaning of this?”
“You are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, filing false financial instruments, and third-degree assault,” the detective announced, producing a set of handcuffs. “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

The courtyard erupted into chaos. Flashbulbs went off like lightning strikes as the police slapped handcuffs around the wrists of the woman who had spent her entire life looking down on the world. The press captured every second of Vivian Mercer being led down the steps, crying out in humiliation as her fur coat slipped from her shoulders.
I stood at the top of the steps, watching her be pushed into the back of the police car—a fitting end for a woman who thought she could shove others into submission.
