Chapter 4

Z
The wooden front door splinters with a deafening crack that reverberates through the narrow townhouse like a gunshot. Dust, drywall fragments, and shattered oak fly into the living room as three heavily armored men in unmarked black tactical gear burst through the threshold, their carbines raised, tactical lights cutting through the dim interior fog.
"Move! Move! Clear the left!" a harsh voice barks.
I don't wait for them to acquire their targets. Grab Naomi Bell by the collar of her jacket, yanking her hard into the narrow, dark kitchen corridor just as a burst of suppressed 5.56mm rounds tears through the drywall where her head had been standing a second prior. The muted thump-thump-thump of the suppressed fire is swallowed by the plaster dust.
"Down!" I order, shoving her beneath the stainless-steel prep table in the alcove.
I pivot smoothly, dropping to one knee at the corner of the hallway frame. The first operator rounds the corner, his weapon raised, the red laser dot searching the dark floor. Before he can center the beam on my chest, I raise the Sig Sauer and squeeze the trigger twice.
Pfft-pfft.
Both rounds hit him square in the center of his heavy ceramic chest plate. The kinetic impact doesn't penetrate the armor, but the sudden, violent transfer of energy knocks the air completely out of his lungs, sending him staggering backward into the narrow doorframe. Before he can regain his balance, I step forward, drive the butt of my heavy pistol into his exposed throat, and seize the barrel of his carbine, wrenching it violently downward and twisting it out of his grip.
The second operator surges around his gasping teammate, pulling a combat knife from his chest rig. He lunges at me with a brutal, low-angled sweep aimed at my abdomen.
I step inside the radius of his blade, sweeping my left arm down to deflect his wrist while simultaneously driving my right knee sharply into his groin. As his head snaps forward in agony, I hook my fingers behind his tactical helmet and smash his face directly into the corner of the brick wall. His body goes limp instantly, dropping to the linoleum floor with a heavy, metallic clatter.
"Serena!" Naomi screams from beneath the table.
The third man—the team leader—retreats two steps into the living room, realizing his squad’s breach has collapsed in less than ten seconds. "Fallback! We’ve got an active shooter! Female, highly trained—"
He doesn't get to finish the transmission. I step over the unconscious body on the floor, raise my weapon, and fire a single, precise shot through the drywall beside the doorframe. The bullet passes through the soft plaster and catches him directly in the shoulder blade. He screams, dropping his weapon, and tumbles backward out the shattered front door into the rain-drenched street.
Silence descends on the townhouse, heavy and suffocating, broken only by the sound of Naomi’s frantic, jagged breathing and the hiss of a ruptured steam pipe in the cellar.
I lower my weapon, ears ringing slightly despite the suppressor, and turn back to Naomi. She is sitting on the kitchen floor, wide-eyed, her hands wrapped tightly around the small external hard drive containing the evidence against Adrian Vale. She looks at me as if I were a ghost—or a monster.
"You... you killed them?" she stammers, her voice barely a whisper.
"They're wearing Class IV body armor and tactical helmets," I say coolly, checking my magazine count before re-holstering the firearm beneath my coat. "They have severe concussions, cracked ribs, and torn ligaments. They’ll live. But Adrian Vale now knows two things: his hit squad failed, and the woman he thought was a meek Pentagon clerk just neutralized three of his best security contractors."
I grab her arm and hoist her to her feet with zero ceremony. "We have six minutes before Baltimore PD responds to the neighbor’s noise complaints. Move."
We hustle out through the rear alleyway, avoiding the front street where a black SUV with running lights on is idling desperately, waiting for a crew that isn't coming back. Rain washes the plaster dust from my hair as we navigate the maze of narrow, trash-strewn lanes toward my hidden vehicle.
Inside the car, I turn on the heater to clear the fogged windows, keeping the lights off as I merge quietly into the morning traffic heading south toward Washington D.C.
Naomi clutches the hard drive to her chest like a life preserver, staring out at the grey highway. "What happens now? We can't go to the police. We can't go to NCIS."
"No," I agree, checking my rear-view mirror for tails. "We go to Jonas. He’s set up a secure holding location in an old DoD communications bunker near Annapolis. You’re going to stay there under heavy guard while Jonas decrypts those files."
"And what about you?" she asks, turning her pale face toward me. "Where are you going?"
I glance at the digital clock on my dashboard. It reads 11:42 AM. The reception for Rear Admiral Curtis Blake at Fort Severn is scheduled for 19:00 hours tonight. My mother has already texted me three times reminding me to wear the dark blue velvet dress she bought me—the one that makes me look "approachable and elegant."
"I have a date to finish," I say, my voice cold as ice. "Adrian Vale invited me into his world because he thought he could control me. Tonight, at Fort Severn, surrounded by every admiral, general, and defense official in the Capital region, I’m going to show him what happens when you pull the thread on the wrong secret."

I press my foot down on the accelerator, the engine humming quietly as we speed toward the center of power.
