Chapter 7 - The Desperate AmbushZ

"Miss Vance, you have a... situation down in the main lobby," my assistant, Sarah, said, poking her head into my corner office with a deeply uncomfortable expression.
I looked up from my dual-monitor setup. "What kind of situation?"
"There’s a woman down there. She's causing a scene with security. She's screaming that you're her daughter, that you abandoned her, and that our firm is employing an abusive criminal who stole her life savings."
My heart did a sharp, violent drop into my stomach.
Eleanor.
She had tracked me down.
"Did security call the police?" I asked, my voice deadly level despite the adrenaline surging through my veins.
"They're trying to keep it quiet because we have high-profile corporate clients coming in for the afternoon summit," Sarah explained nervously. "Arthur is down there right now, trying to handle it, but she’s hysterical, Chloe. She’s throwing papers around."
I stood up immediately, smoothing down the front of my tailored navy suit jacket.
Six months ago, the thought of my mother causing a scene at my workplace would have filled me with paralyzing shame. I would have run down, apologized, paid her whatever she wanted, and begged her to leave to save my job.
Now? Now I was a Senior Financial Analyst with a ironclad audit trail, a supportive senior partner, and zero patience left for emotional terrorism.
"I'll handle it," I said calmly.
I took the elevator down to the grand marble lobby. As soon as the silver doors slid open, Eleanor’s screeching voice echoed off the high ceilings.
"She works here! Chloe Vance! My own daughter! She left me homeless! She forced her stepfather to divorce me! She stole my family's money!"
A small crowd of high-level executives, clients, and security guards had gathered in a semi-circle. In the center stood Eleanor.
She looked horrifyingly unspun. The polished, aristocratic suburban woman was gone. Her hair was frizzy and unkempt, her clothing was disheveled, and her eyes were bloodshot with manic desperation.
Arthur stood ten feet away from her, his arms folded, surrounded by three large security guards.
"Madam, you need to step off the property immediately," Arthur said coldly. "You are trespassing on private corporate grounds."
"I am not leaving until my daughter comes down here and gives me what she owes me!" Eleanor screamed, waving a crumpled piece of paper. "She ruined my marriage! She turned Emily against me! She cut off my bank accounts!"
"Mother," I said, my voice cutting clear and sharp through the lobby.
The crowd turned. Eleanor snapped her head in my direction, her eyes lighting up with a dangerous, wild fire.
"Chloe!" she shrieked, taking three quick steps toward me before the security guards immediately moved to block her path. "Chloe, tell them! Tell them you're my daughter! Tell them to give me money for rent! David took the house! He took everything! I have nothing left!"
I walked slowly toward her, stopping behind the security line. I didn't look angry. I didn't look afraid. I looked at her with the cold, detached curiosity of a doctor examining a dying specimen.
"David didn't take everything because he was mean, Eleanor," I said softly, ensuring my voice carried across the silent lobby. "He took the house because you committed mortgage fraud using his forged signature to pay off your credit card debts from your shopping sprees."
The crowd murmured. Eleanor’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water.
"How... how do you know that?" she gasped.
"Because David’s divorce attorney called my office last week to ask for certified copies of the bank statements from your theft of my income," I said. "You spent twenty years using people, Eleanor. You used Dad until he died. You used David until he caught you. You used Emily as a prop. And you used me as a personal bank."
"I am your mother!" she bellowed, tears streaming down her face, ruining her makeup. "You owe me your life!"
"I paid that debt," I replied, stepping right up to her face, leaning in so only she could hear my next words. "Fifty-seven thousand six hundred dollars. That was the price of my freedom. I paid it in full. You spent it on spas and country clubs. We are square."
I stood back up and turned to the Chief of Security.
"Chief Miller," I said, "this woman is trespassing, harassing employees, and attempting corporate extortion. Please call the Chicago Police Department and have her formally arrested and issued a permanent restraining order for Vance Tower and my residential address."
"No! Chloe, wait! Don't do this!" Eleanor shrieked as the two massive security guards grabbed her arms, pinning her firmly but professionally. "You can't do this to me! I'm your mother! You're a monster! A cold, unfeeling monster!"
I didn't answer her. I didn't offer a dramatic speech.
I simply turned my back on her screams, adjusted my sleeves, and walked back toward the executive elevators.

As the silver doors slid shut, cutting off the echoing sound of her cries, Arthur stepped into the elevator beside me. He looked at me with a slow, proud nod.
"Handled like a true Vance," Arthur said quietly. "Now... let's go win that ten-million-dollar account."
