Chapter 2 - The Wiretap StrategyZ

Gwendolyn Ross adjusted her dark blazer, her piercing grey eyes reflecting the glow of her laptop screen as she leaned over my hospital bed. The hum of the heart monitor provided a steady, rhythmic backdrop to the storm that was about to break. My leg was encased in a heavy cast, elevated on pillows, but for the first time in three years, the suffocating fog in my mind had cleared completely. Painkillers coursed through my veins, yet my focus was sharp, cold, and absolute.

"They think this is a domestic dispute, Abigail," Gwendolyn said, her voice smooth like crushed velvet, carrying the weight of twenty years as Indianapolis’s most ruthless family and criminal trial attorney. "They think it’s your word against theirs. A he-said-she-said scenario where a dutiful husband and his respectable mother claim an unstable wife took a spill down the kitchen stairs. But they made two fatal mistakes."

"What mistakes?" I rasped, my throat raw from days of holding back screams.

"First, they forgot that your employer, Apex Logistics, didn't just wire your salary to the joint account Margaret controlled," Gwendolyn said, sliding a thick blue folder onto my lap. "You were the lead financial auditor for their Midwest supply chain. For the past eighteen months, Derek has been using your digital signature to authorize secondary transfers from your account into a shell company registered in Delaware—Vanguard Premier Assets LLC."

I stared at the paperwork. The signatures were forged, but executed with frightening precision. Derek hadn't just been stealing my hard-earned salary; he had been using my professional credentials to hide assets.

"And the second mistake?" I asked, my fingers clutching the bedsheets.

"Derek called you on an unencrypted line from the hospital lobby," Gwendolyn smiled, a predator displaying her teeth. "Indiana is a one-party consent state for wiretapping and audio recording. The moment Nurse Rachel handed you that phone, every word Derek uttered was recorded on our secure server. 'Everything you have is mine.' That’s not a husband talking to his sick wife, Abigail. That’s a confession of coercion."

Before I could process the tactical brilliance of Gwendolyn’s setup, my cheap prepaid phone buzzed violently on the tray table. The caller ID showed an unknown number, but I knew the cadence of those digits by heart. It was Derek calling from a burner or a public payphone.

Gwendolyn tapped a red button on her tablet, initializing a high-definition recording interface, and gave me a firm nod.

I picked up the phone, hitting the speaker button. "Hello?"

"You stupid, ungrateful bitch!" Derek’s voice erupted through the speaker, distorted with fury, masking the panic underneath. "Do you have any idea what you’ve done? Mom is having a panic attack! My dad’s blood pressure is spiking! You put a doctor up to making public accusations in a hospital hallway?"

"Derek... my leg is shattered," I said, putting on a faint, trembling tone, letting him believe I was still the broken woman who had crawled through the dirt three nights ago. "The doctor saw the X-rays. He said it was blunt force trauma..."

"Shut your mouth!" he spat. "Listen to me very carefully, Abigail. You are going to sign a statement saying you were confused from painkillers. You are going to tell the police that you fell down the stairs after drinking too much wine. If you don't, I swear to God, I will call your father's employer in Cincinnati tomorrow morning. I’ll make sure he knows about the 'accounting errors' I found in his pension file. You think you’re the only one who can be destroyed?"

My blood ran cold. My father had worked thirty-five years as a mid-level manager for a regional steel distributor. Derek had helped him manage his digital retirement portal two years ago. The bastard had planted leverage back then, anticipating a day I might try to run.

Gwendolyn quickly scribbled a note on a yellow legal pad and held it in front of my face: Keep him talking. Get him to admit the rolling pin.

I swallowed hard, forcing my voice to quiver. "Derek, please... don't bring my dad into this. Margaret hit me because of the salt in the stew. She used the wooden rolling pin. You saw her holding it while I was on the floor!"

"So what if she did?!" Derek roared, completely unaware of the digital snare tightening around his neck. "You talked back to her! You disrespected my family in our own home! She taught you a lesson you should have learned years ago! Now you fix this, Abigail, or I will burn your family's life to the ground before the sun comes up!"

"I... I need time," I whimpered.

"You have until 8:00 AM tomorrow," Derek snarled. "If a full recantation isn't delivered to my lawyer, your father goes to prison, and you won't have a dime left to pay for that hospital room."

The line went dead with a harsh click.

Gwendolyn immediately stopped the recording and transferred the file to an encrypted flash drive. She looked at me, her eyes shining with quiet triumph. "We don't just have him for extortion and obstruction of justice now. He just admitted to being an accessory after the fact to aggravated assault, and he explicitly validated the weapon used."

"He threatened my dad, Gwendolyn," I said, tears of rage finally breaking through my composure. "He has access to my father's pension accounts."

"He had access," Gwendolyn corrected, pulling out her personal cell phone. "Five minutes before I walked into this room, a federal judge signed an emergency Ex Parte freeze on all accounts tied to Derek Miller, Margaret Miller, and Vanguard Premier Assets. As of right now, every credit card in Derek’s wallet is declined. Every bank account is locked. He can't buy a cup of coffee, let alone tamper with your father's pension."

Just then, the door to room 304 swung open. Two uniformed officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department stepped inside, accompanied by a tall man in a tailored dark grey suit with a silver detective’s shield pinned to his belt.

"Abigail Miller?" the detective asked, taking off his fedora. "I’m Detective Marcus Vance, Major Crimes Division. Miss Ross sent over your preliminary medical files an hour ago."

"Detective Vance," Gwendolyn stood up, handing him the flash drive. "You're just in time. We have the suspect on audio committing felony extortion, admitting to his mother's use of a deadly weapon, and threatening witness retaliation."

Detective Vance took the drive, his expression stern. "We just pulled the surveillance footage from the hallway earlier today. Mr. Miller and his mother made quite a scene. But Miss Ross... there’s something else you need to know before we proceed with the arrest warrants."

"What is it?" Gwendolyn frowned.

"Derek Miller didn't go home after leaving the hospital," Detective Vance said, leaning against the edge of my bed, his dark eyes looking directly into mine. "Our units spotted his vehicle parked outside the Marion County Records Building. He just filed an emergency petition for temporary guardianship over you, claiming you are mentally incapacitated due to a severe psychotic break."

I gasped, a sudden wave of nausea hitting my stomach. "What?"

"He brought a signed medical affidavit," Vance continued. "Signed by a Dr. Arthur Vance—no relation to me—claiming you’ve been under psychiatric care for violent delusions for the past two years."

Gwendolyn’s face hardened into stone. "Arthur Vance... he’s the chief medical director at the private clinic where Margaret sits on the board of directors. They aren't just trying to cover up an assault, Detective. They are trying to lock her away in a psychiatric facility to gain total legal control over her estate and suppress the financial fraud."

I looked at the window, where the rain was beating mercilessly against the glass. The Millers thought they were playing a local game of domestic intimidation. They didn't realize they had declared war on a woman who had nothing left to lose.

"Gwendolyn," I said, my voice dropping all pretense of fear, becoming as cold as the surgical steel inside my leg. "Call my employer. Tell the board of Apex Logistics that their senior financial auditor is ready to disclose the multi-million-dollar embezzlement ring operating under their noses."

Gwendolyn smiled slowly. "Now you're thinking like a survivor, Abigail. Let's burn their kingdom down."
