Chapter 2

CHAPTER 2 — THE VOTE HE NEVER EXPECTED
By nine the next morning, Adrian stood before the emergency board of Vale Medical Systems.
He had changed into his most expensive suit.
But nothing could hide the panic in his eyes.
I entered beside my father wearing the same gray dress from the previous night.
I wanted everyone to see me exactly as Adrian had left me.
Camille sat near the company attorney.
She no longer wore my earrings.
Rebecca placed the false medical declaration on the table.
“Mr. Vale intended to have his pregnant wife declared incompetent and take control of her inheritance.”
Adrian stood abruptly.
“That document was prepared for her protection.”
“Then why did you pay Dr. Vale fifty thousand dollars?” I asked.
The room fell silent.
My father’s investigators had found the transfer before dawn.
They had uncovered something else too.
Adrian had moved nearly four million dollars from the company into a private account controlled by Camille.
She stared at him.
“You said that money came from your bonus.”
Adrian leaned toward her.
“Don’t say another word.”
For the first time, Camille looked afraid of him.
Then she reached into her purse and removed a second phone.
“He gave me this so Olivia couldn’t find our messages.”
Adrian reached for it, but security stopped him.
The phone contained bank records, photographs and messages describing his plan.
After my daughter was born, Adrian intended to send me to a private psychiatric facility.
He would control my child’s inheritance as her legal guardian.
Camille would move into the mansion and become his new wife.
“You didn’t marry me,” I said. “You married the fortune you thought you could steal.”
The board voted unanimously to remove him as chief executive.
His company badge was taken before he left the room.
I thought the worst was finally over.
Then Camille touched my arm.
“There’s something you still don’t understand.”
She glanced toward the boardroom doors.
“Adrian didn’t create this plan.”
The doors opened.
My mother-in-law, Margaret Vale, walked inside carrying a sealed document.
She placed it on the table and smiled at me.
“Your trust no longer belongs to you, Olivia.”
Margaret pushed the document toward my father.
My signature appeared at the bottom.
For one terrible moment, I questioned myself.
During the final months of my pregnancy, Adrian had brought me stacks of papers to sign.
Insurance documents.
Hospital forms.
Tax records.
Had he hidden the trust transfer among them?
Rebecca examined the signature.
“This was notarized inside the Vale residence.”
Margaret smiled.
“Which makes it legal.”
“No,” I said. “It makes it evidence.”
Everyone looked at me.
Three months earlier, I had begun photographing every document Adrian asked me to sign.
He had stopped allowing me to read the final pages.
Something about his behavior frightened me.
My phone backups proved that the trust transfer had never been placed in front of me.
My signature had been copied from a hospital form.
Margaret’s confidence weakened.
Camille placed Adrian’s second phone on the table.
“Margaret introduced me to Adrian,” she confessed.
My mother-in-law had discovered the family trust two years earlier.
She learned my daughter would inherit controlling shares when she was born.
Margaret persuaded Adrian that if I were declared mentally incompetent, he could manage everything as my husband.
Camille was supposed to replace me after I disappeared from public life.
“You promised nobody would get hurt,” Camille whispered.
Margaret remained cold.
“Olivia would have received excellent care.”
My hand moved protectively over my stomach.
“You were going to take my child.”
“I was protecting the Vale family.”
My father slowly approached her.
“There will be no Vale fortune when my lawyers are finished.”
Rebecca played an audio recording recovered from the mansion’s security system.
Margaret’s voice filled the boardroom.
She described the false diagnosis.
The stolen money.
The plan to isolate me after delivery.
Adrian dropped into a chair.
“Mother, you said the cameras were disabled.”
That sentence destroyed his final defense.
Investigators entered moments later.
Margaret was escorted out first.
Adrian followed, still calling my name.
He begged me to remember our wedding.
I remembered every promise.
I also remembered every lie.
As the doors closed behind him, pain tore through my abdomen.
My father caught me before I fell.

Then I felt water spreading across the floor.
The baby was coming six weeks early.
