Chapter 7 - THE CLEANING OF THE LAB

The subterranean laboratory suite of Vance Medical Systems was a masterpiece of sterile, high-tech design. Rows of gleaming stainless-steel counters, glowing biometric monitors, and advanced neural-mapping arrays filled the expansive space. Scientists in white lab coats moved quietly, their attention focused on the cutting-edge work that had recently captivated the world.
At the far end of the facility, inside a glass-walled cleanroom, Dr. Julian Vance stood reviewing a series of holographic brain scans. He looked relaxed, a faint, confident smile on his face as he tapped commands into a tablet.
The heavy pneumatic doors of the lab hissed open.
I walked inside, my heels clicking sharply against the polished concrete floor. Behind me came Daniel, Detective Miller, and four uniformed security guards. The sudden, intense presence of the executive leadership caused the surrounding scientists to freeze, their conversations dying out instantly.
Julian looked up from his tablet. Seeing me, his smile widened, and he stepped out of the cleanroom, removing his protective latex gloves.
“Eleanor, Daniel,” Julian said smoothly, his tone perfectly warm and professional. “To what do I owe the pleasure? I was just finalizing the secondary data sets for the FDA submission. The preliminary feedback from the regulators is incredibly positive.”
I stopped five feet away from him. I didn't smile. I didn't acknowledge his warmth. I simply watched him with an expression of absolute, unyielding ice.
“The data sets are irrelevant, Julian,” I said, my voice echoing clearly through the silent laboratory. “Because your tenure at Vance Medical Systems has just concluded.”
Julian blinked, a flicker of confusion crossing his sharp features before he forced a light, amused chuckle. “I’m sorry? Is this a joke, Eleanor? We just returned from Zurich. We just secured four billion dollars in pre-orders. The entire global media is calling us the dream team of biomedical science.”
“There is no dream team, Julian,” I replied, stepping closer, my eyes locking onto his. “There is only an employer and a criminal. Detective Miller, if you please.”
Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling a document from his trench coat. “Dr. Julian Vance, I am an officer with the Financial Crimes Division. I have a federal warrant for your arrest on charges of corporate espionage, receiving illicit funds from a corporate officer, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.”
The color drained from Julian’s face with terrifying speed. His confident posture shattered, his shoulders stiffening as his eyes darted from the detective to the documents in my hand.
“This... this is an absurdity,” Julian stammered, his voice losing its refined edge, becoming thin and frantic. “Eleanor, you can't believe this. I am a Vance! I am your family! I brought Project Aurora to life!”
“You didn't bring it to life, Julian,” I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous, lethal whisper. “You held it hostage. We have the full forensic records from Aegis Holdings in the Cayman Islands. We know exactly how much Grant Vale paid you to delay the milestone reports. We know you spent a year pretending the neural synchronization matrices were unstable, all while Grant was siphoning seventy million dollars out of the research budget.”
Julian opened his mouth to defend himself, but no words came out. The realization that his offshore shield had been completely obliterated left him utterly defenseless.
“You thought you were brilliant,” I continued, my words cutting into him like glass. “You thought Grant was an idiot—and he was—but you believed you could use his corruption to your advantage. You thought that once Grant fell, I would come begging for your genius, offering you a massive salary and a prestigious title to save the company. You played both sides of a war, Julian, and you forgot that the victor always inspects the battlefield.”
“Eleanor, listen to me,” Julian pleaded, taking a desperate step forward before two security guards immediately grabbed his arms, pinning him in place. “Grant forced my hand! He threatened to cut my research funding permanently if I didn't cooperate! I did it to protect the science! If I hadn't delayed the reports, he would have sold the patent to an overseas syndicate! I kept it safe within the company!”
“You did it for fifty thousand dollars a month,” Daniel interjected, his face a mask of pure disgust. “Don't drape your greed in the flag of scientific integrity, cousin. You're a thief in a white coat.”
I took the wireless remote for the Lily Interface from my pocket and placed it on the counter beside him.
“Your research notes, your algorithms, and every line of code you wrote while under contract with Vance Medical belong entirely to the Vance Family Trust,” I said firmly. “You will leave this building in handcuffs, and I will personally ensure that your name is stripped from every publication, every patent filing, and every medical journal associated with this project.”
Julian’s eyes flared with a sudden, vicious malice, the mask of the refined intellectual completely slipping away to reveal the arrogant narcissist beneath.
“You think you can run this company without me, Eleanor?” he spat, his voice trembling with rage as Detective Miller pulled his hands behind his back and clicked the steel handcuffs into place. “I am the mind behind the Lily Interface! Without me, you’re just a bitter divorcee playing with her father’s money! The FDA will reject your submissions the moment they realize the lead engineer is behind bars!”
I looked at him, my expression entirely unmoved by his venom.
“The FDA will review the science, Julian. And fortunately for Vance Medical, the actual breakthrough—the core algorithm that stabilized the micro-cellular telemetry—wasn't written by you. It was written by my father, ten years ago, in a research journal you apparently failed to read thoroughly.”
I signaled the detective.
“Take him away.”
The surrounding scientists watched in absolute silence as Julian Vance was marched out of the laboratory, his boots scuffing against the floor, his angry curses fading away as the pneumatic doors clicked shut behind him.
I turned to face the remaining research staff, who were standing frozen, terrified that the purge would extend to them.
“Dr. Aris,” I called out, looking at a quiet, brilliant young researcher who had spent months working in Julian’s shadow.
The young woman stepped forward nervously. “Yes, Ms. Vance?”
“You are now the Director of Neuro-Engineering,” I announced calmly. “Your first task is to compile the final FDA documentation using my father’s original baseline matrices. You have forty-eight hours. Do you have any questions?”
Dr. Aris looked shocked, her eyes wide, before a look of intense determination took over. She stood up straight and nodded firmly. “No questions, Chairwoman. The data will be on your desk by Friday morning.”
“Good. Get to work.”
As the laboratory roared back to life, the scientists returning to their terminals with a newfound, frantic energy, I walked out of the facility alongside Daniel.
“You handle traitors even better than you handle ex-husbands,” Daniel noted as we rode the elevator back to the executive suite.
“A traitor is simply an ex-husband who hasn't been caught yet,” I replied, looking at my reflection in the polished steel doors. “Grant, Vivian, Celeste, Julian... they all made the same fundamental mistake. They believed that wealth and power are things you can steal, manipulate, or inherit through arrogance. They never understood that true power is a matter of absolute competence.”

The elevator doors opened onto the top floor. The sun was setting over the city, casting a brilliant gold glow over my office.
My empire was clean. The weeds had been pulled from the root, and the foundation was finally, completely pure.
