Chapter 13 - THE DEBT COLLECTOR

Z

Detective Morales did not tell us everything immediately.

That was the first sign the situation was worse than she wanted to admit.

Two days after the storage unit was opened, she asked Claire and me to meet her at a federal office downtown. Her tone over the phone was controlled, but I had known her long enough to recognize the tension beneath it.

“This is related to Brandon’s financial case,” she said. “But it may involve people outside Wisconsin.”

When Claire and I arrived, a man in a dark suit was waiting inside the conference room.

He introduced himself as Special Agent Marcus Hale from the FBI’s financial-crimes division.

My heart began racing.

“Is this about the storage unit?” I asked.

“Yes,” he said. “And about several businesses connected to Brandon Carter.”

Agent Hale placed a series of photos on the table.

The two men from the restaurant photograph were identified as Victor Sloane and Raymond Pike. Both had ties to private lending companies under federal investigation for fraud, money laundering, and coercive debt collection.

“They used shell businesses to move money,” Agent Hale explained. “People like Brandon were recruited to bring in borrowers, false guarantors, and bank access.”

I felt sick.

“You’re saying Brandon was working for them?”

“Not exactly. He owed them.”

Claire leaned forward.

“Owed them what?”

“Money,” Agent Hale said. “A lot of it.”

The documents showed that Brandon had borrowed nearly $300,000 before he ever emptied our savings account. He had hidden the debt from me for more than a year.

He had used our joint money to pay part of it down.

He had used my identity to secure more loans.

And when the property deals failed, he had borrowed from people who did not accept late payments quietly.

“That envelope,” I said. “You owe us.”

Agent Hale nodded.

“Brandon was under pressure. The threats against you may have been connected to that pressure.”

I thought about the photograph of Mom walking near the lake.

The black SUV outside the cottage.

Liam’s message to Brandon.

She needs to remember she can’t hide forever.

My blood went cold.

“Was Liam involved with these men?”

“We don’t have evidence of that yet,” Agent Hale said. “But we are investigating.”

For the next week, I barely slept.

I installed security cameras around the cottage. Mom tried to act brave, but she began checking the locks twice before bed. Daniel offered to stay over, but I refused at first.

Not because I didn’t trust him.

Because I was afraid that being close to me would put him in danger.

One evening, he found me sitting in the kitchen with every light on.

“You don’t have to push me away to protect me,” he said.

“I don’t know how to do this,” I admitted.

“Do what?”

“Let someone care about me without waiting for the price.”

He sat across from me.

“Then don’t promise me forever,” he said. “Just let me sit here tonight.”

So I did.

Three nights later, my mother received a package.

It was addressed to her.

No return address.

Inside was a small blue ceramic vase.

Almost identical to the one that had shattered in the apartment the day Brandon hit her.

Mom stared at it for a long time.

Then she began shaking.

Taped to the bottom was a handwritten note.

Family always pays its debts.

I called Agent Hale before I could think twice.

Within an hour, the cottage was surrounded by officers. The vase was taken for fingerprints, DNA, and trace evidence. Detective Morales insisted that Mom and I stay somewhere else temporarily.

That night, Daniel drove us to a hotel near the lake.

The same hotel where Mom and I had stayed after leaving Brandon.

The irony was painful.

Mom sat on the edge of the bed, holding my hand.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

“No,” I said. “You are never apologizing for surviving again.”

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“I thought when Brandon went away, it would be over.”

“So did I.”

My phone buzzed.

A text from an unknown number.

No words.

Only a location pin.

It led to an abandoned warehouse near the Milwaukee River.

Then a second message appeared.

Bring the flash drive from the storage unit. Come alone.

Claire immediately called Agent Hale.

But as he examined the message, his expression changed.

“It may be a trap,” he said.

“Of course it’s a trap,” I replied.

He shook his head.

“No. I mean it may be a trap for them.”

I looked at him.

“What are you saying?”

Agent Hale showed me the location again.

“That warehouse is already under surveillance.”

Then he looked directly at me.

May you like

“And we may finally know who is trying to collect Brandon’s debt.”
