Chapter 4 - The Counter-Strike

Daniel's call had shaken me more than I wanted to admit, but it had also solidified my resolve. He was still trying to manipulate me from behind bars. He still saw me as an easily controlled asset.

It was time to take the offensive on all fronts.

Mara and I had finalized our media strategy. It was a high-risk, high-reward move. We wouldn't just defend; we would proactively counter the inevitable narrative Daniel's team was trying to weave.

"They are already leaking stories to the tabloids," Mara explained, her face grim. She showed me a headline from a particularly salacious gossip site: TECH TYCOON'S HUSBAND FRAMED? Lawyer Claims "Scorned Wife" Faked Recordings.

"It’s weak, but it sows doubt," she said. "We need to hit back with the full, devastating reality of their plan. Not just the fraud, but the conspiracy. People need to see how calculated this was."

"How do we do that without compromising the criminal case?"

"We don't. We let the criminal filings themselves do the talking. The full indictment is about to be unsealed. It details the conspiracy to cause you physical harm, based on Evelyn's testimony and the supporting evidence Ruiz gathered. We release a statement immediately after the unsealing, focusing on the gravity of these additional charges."

"And Evelyn?"

"Ruiz has placed her in witness protection. The intimidation attempt by Daniel’s lawyer has been formally documented and added as a separate charge. It’s significantly weakened Daniel's stance."

The next week, the indictment was unsealed, and the details were even more horrific than I had imagined. The specific nature of the "staged accident," the discussions of drugs, the chilling indifference of Gloria—it was a devastating document.

Mara released our carefully drafted statement:

“We are shocked and deeply saddened by the additional details revealed in the unsealed indictment. These charges paint a picture of pre-meditated, calculated cruelty that goes far beyond financial fraud or simple domestic conflict. Ms. Vance is currently focusing on ensuring the stability of Vance Security Systems and cooperating fully with law enforcement to see that justice is served. She asks for privacy for herself and for the other victims involved during this painful time.”

We didn't need to elaborate. The facts spoke for themselves. The story shifted almost overnight from "messy divorce" to "chilling conspiracy to murder." The public, previously curious, was now largely horrified.

Daniel’s team tried to counter with a statement about "overzealous prosecutors" and "context-less snippets of audio," but they were drowned out by the sheer weight of the evidence.

My company’s stocks, which had dipped slightly after the initial arrest, began to stabilize. The clarity and decisiveness of my actions, both internally and in the media, were resonating. We weren't a company paralyzed by scandal; we were a company being managed with transparent and effective leadership, led by a woman who had successfully identified and neutralized a sophisticated internal threat.

But while the public battle was raging, the asset hunt had taken an intriguing turn.

Sarah's lead on Vanessa's former NYC apartment had paid off spectacularly. "The sale of the apartment was a sham," she explained. "It was 'sold' to another shell company, 'Apex Real Estate Holdings.' We tracked the management fees Vanessa was paying. They weren't for an apartment she no longer owned. They were for a storage unit within the building."

A storage unit. I felt a chill of anticipation.

"Do we have a warrant?" Mara asked, already reaching for her phone.

"Detective Ruiz is executing it now," I said. "He agreed it was a high-probability site for concealed assets."

An hour later, Ruiz called me from New York. "We found it, Ms. Vance. Or rather, we found a great deal of what Mrs. Lawson had purchased with your money."

The storage unit was packed with high-end furniture, artwork, dozens of designer handbags (many still with tags), and enough high-value jewelry to start a small shop. But the real prize was in a small, fireproof safe at the back.

Inside were multiple passports for Vanessa and Gloria, pre-stamped and dated. There were also bearer bonds—untraceable, high-value financial instruments—and several USB drives.

"Bearer bonds?" I said, stunned. "That’s old-school money laundering. Untraceable cash."

"The amount is substantial," Ruiz said. "Well over two million dollars’ worth. It appears they were planning a very comfortable escape. And the USB drives? We’re having our forensic team analyze them, but given everything else, they probably contain details on the other offshore accounts Sarah has been hunting."

The discovery was a devastating blow to the defense. It proved long-term planning, a comprehensive asset-stripping strategy, and a deliberate plan to flee the country. It demolished any remaining notion that they were simply 'negligent' or that this was just a 'misunderstanding.'

When Daniel was informed about the discovery during an interrogation, Ruiz told me he had gone completely pale and silent. The facade was crumbling, the bravado that had fuelled his abusive behavior evaporated in the face of hard, physical evidence.

In court, at the next bond hearing, the evidence of the hidden bonds and pre-dated passports was decisive. All bond requests for Daniel, Gloria, and Vanessa were denied. The risk of flight was now an established fact. They would be awaiting trial from jail.

But the real counter-strike came from an unexpected quarter.

Evelyn, now safe and being represented by legal counsel we had helped secure, contacted Mara. She had another recording. Not a new one, but one she had previously been too terrified to share.

"She says it's from the day Daniel punched you," Mara explained, her voice serious. "He came to her apartment immediately afterward. He was agitated, boasting about how he had 'shown you your place.'"

The video was on the same tablet Ruiz had taken as evidence, but we now had a second copy, verified by Evelyn. I watched it with a sick feeling of dread.

Daniel, pacing in Evelyn's living room, a wild look in his eyes. He was bragging, laughing.

"She thought she could stand up to me? She thought I was joking about the noodles? The bitch actually tried to give me attitude about my company! So, I showed her. I put her in her place. She won't forget that lesson in a hurry."

Evelyn's voice was small, scared. "Did you… did you hurt her badly?"

"Just a little reminder," he sneered. "Just enough so she remembers who is really in charge. She's a weak, emotional woman. All women are. They all need a strong hand. You know that, don't you, Evelyn?" He laughed, a chilling, triumphant sound.

"And now she’s back in the kitchen, right? Where she belongs, playing good little wife. It’s all going perfectly, Mother. Just like we planned. The bitch thinks she’s winning, but I have her right where I want her."

The recording was not just an admission of physical assault; it was a devastating admission of the psychological and emotional abuse, the calculated nature of his behavior, and a clear link back to Gloria's overarching 'plan.' It was proof of his toxic, misogynistic worldview, and of his absolute contempt for me and for women in general.

Mara and Detective Ruiz reviewed the new video immediately. It was arguably the most powerful piece of evidence we had, directly connecting the physical assault to the wider conspiracy.

"This is incredible," Ruiz said, his professional veneer cracking slightly with admiration for the evidence. "It gives us so much context. It’s not just a slap; it’s part of a systematic pattern of abuse and control. And the reference to his mother and 'the plan'… it’s all here."

We decided not to release this video to the media yet. We would save it for the trial, to be played to the jury in its entirety, delivering a devastating, undeniable truth directly in open court. It would be our coup de grâce.

The pieces were now all in place. The assets were being recovered and secured. The legal case was built on a foundation of unassailable data and powerful witness testimony. The public narrative had shifted, painting me as a survivor and my in-laws as monsters.

Daniel's world, once so meticulously constructed on a foundation of lies and manipulation, was now a pile of rubble.

And the woman he had dismissed as a 'weak, emotional nerd' was the architect of his demise.

I stood by my large living room window, the city lights twinkling below me. This place, once so empty and cold, now felt filled with a sense of accomplishment and anticipation. The fight was far from over, but the victory was starting to feel real.

The slap had been an ending, yes, but it was also a spark. They had wanted to burn my world down, but they had only succeeded in illuminating the path I needed to take. And that path, paved with the irrefutable truth of data and the unbreakable spirit of a woman reclaimed, was leading me directly to justice. The counter-strike was no longer a plan; it was a reality, unfolding step by step, and the final, beautiful conclusion was now, finally, in sight.
