Chapter 11

Chapter 11 - The Mathematics of Leverage .Elliot let out a high-pitched, hysterical laugh, standing up from the plastic chair. He pointed a trembling finger at the laptop screen."The drive is right here, Victoria! Sixty percent of the source code is already uploaded to a secure server in Zurich," he shouted, his voice cracking. "The moment Charles confirms the wire transfer from his offshore buyers, the remaining forty percent goes live. Vanguard’s defense contracts will be worthless by morning. You think you're the only one who can play the system? I learned from the best!"

"You learned nothing, Elliot," I said, my voice remaining perfectly level, a stark contrast to his manic energy. "If you had learned anything from me, you would know that I never enter a room without knowing exactly how many exits there are."

Charles Vance frowned, his smile faltering slightly. "Don't bluff, Victoria. You brought your security chief, Pendleton's old man. My men saw him outside. They’re currently dealing with him. You're alone."

"Arthur isn't dealing with your men, Charles. Arthur is currently sitting in the server room of your Zurich bank," I lied smoothly, though the reality was much more elegant. I pulled my phone from my pocket and held it up. "Eleanor filed an emergency international injunction two hours ago, using the evidence of your insider trading network. The Zurich server you’re uploading to? It’s not a black-market buyer. It’s an SEC honeypot. Every byte of data Elliot has uploaded for the past sixty minutes has gone directly to a federal grand jury."

Elliot’s jaw dropped. He turned to the laptop, his fingers flying across the keyboard as he tried to check the routing protocols. "No... no, that’s impossible! The IP address was verified!"

"It was verified by a broker who works for me, Elliot," I said, taking a step closer. "Did you really think a man who couldn't balance his own checkbook could find a secure, untraceable data buyer in forty-eight hours without my networks noticing? I let you find that broker. I let you steal the code. Because I needed a definitive, federal crime to ensure you and your uncle never see the light of day again."

Charles Vance’s face turned a dangerous shade of purple. He turned to his two guards. "Kill her. Put her in the marsh. Now."

The guards reached into their jackets, but before their hands could clear their leather holsters, the glass windows along the roof of the factory shattered inward.

Three flashbang grenades exploded in rapid succession, filling the cavernous room with blinding white light and a deafening roar. The two guards fell to the floor, clutching their ears, as Arthur’s high-threat extraction team dropped down from the steel rafters on tactical ropes, their automatic weapons trained directly on Charles and Elliot.

Arthur stepped out of the shadows behind me, his weapon drawn, his expression completely blank. "Perimeter secure, Ms. Davenport. The local authorities are waiting at the main road."

Charles Vance fell back into a chair, his heart visibly hammering against his chest, realizing the absolute finality of the trap. He had thought he was playing a corporate chess match; he didn't realize he was playing against a machine that had already simulated every possible outcome three moves before the game even started.

Elliot, however, didn't sink into defeat. The realization that he had been outmaneuvered yet again, that his grand revenge was just another loop in my algorithm, broke the final thread of his sanity.

With a wild animal cry, he snatched a rusted fish hook from the table and lunged directly at me.

"Victoria!" Arthur shouted, raising his weapon, but he didn't have the angle without risking hitting me.

I didn't step back. I didn't panic. As Elliot reached me, his face twisted in a mask of pure, murderous hatred, I simply slid my hand out of my pocket, brought the silver pistol up, and fired a single shot directly into his right shoulder.
