Chapter 15 - The Final Asset

The tactical collapse of Kevin’s ambush was instantaneous, violent, and absolute.

Outside, the thunderous roar of flashbang grenades exploded against the rear patio, sending blinding blue-white flashes and deafening concussive blasts tearing through the kitchen windows.

"SWAT! COVER THE REAR!" screamed voices through the shattered glass.

The two armed mercenaries flanking Kevin turned toward the kitchen, raising their submachine guns to return fire. Before they could pull their triggers, the heavy front bay windows of the living room shattered in a cascade of flying glass as two State Police SWAT teams breached the room, their weapon-mounted tactical lights blinding the interior in high-intensity beams.

"DOWN ON THE GROUND! DOWN ON THE GROUND!"

One of the mercenaries turned his weapon toward the SWAT officers. A single, suppressed rifle shot echoed from the rooftop across the street, blowing through the glass and dropping the gunman instantly to the floor. The second mercenary threw his hands into the air, dropping his weapon and collapsing onto his stomach as three officers tackled him into the hardwood.

Kevin didn't surrender.

In the blinding chaos of flashing lights, shattering glass, and screaming officers, Kevin grabbed my coat collar with a violent, frantic strength, yanked me in front of his body as a human shield, and pressed the burning barrel of his silenced pistol directly against the soft skin beneath my jawline.

"BACK OFF!" Kevin screamed, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, hysterical shriek. "BACK OFF OR I’LL BLOW HER HEAD OFF! I’LL DO IT! I SWEAR TO GOD I’LL DO IT!"

The SWAT team froze, their rifles locked onto Kevin’s head, their laser sights painting bright red dots across his face and my coat.

Marcus stepped through the shattered front window frame, wearing a heavy tactical vest, his pistol raised, his face set in a mask of absolute, icy focus.

"It’s over, Kevin," Marcus said, his voice low, steady, and cut through the ringing alarms. "Victor Vance is in cuffs outside. Your men are disarmed. You have nowhere to run."

"Shut up! Shut up!" Kevin screamed, pulling me backward toward the dark doorway of his former home office. His arm was wrapped around my neck in a crushing vice, his hot, ragged breath smelling of stale tobacco and panic against my ear. "She has the passphrase, Marcus! She speaks the passphrase, or none of us leave this house alive!"

I felt the heavy, cold steel of the gun pressing deep into my flesh. I could feel the violent, irregular tremor in his hands—the frantic, desperate shaking of a predator who realized the trap had closed around his neck.

Six months ago, this moment would have destroyed me. I would have wept, I would have begged, I would have surrendered to his demands just to survive another hour.

But as I stood in the ruined shell of the house where he had tried to erase my daughter, I felt no terror. I felt only an absolute, blinding clarity.

I reached up with my right hand, my fingers wrapping around the hot barrel of his pistol, shoving the muzzle upward away from my neck.

"Maureen, no!" Marcus yelled.

"You don't own me anymore, Kevin," I hissed through my teeth.

With every ounce of strength left in my body, I drove my heavy winter boot backward, stomping my heel directly onto Kevin’s knee joint with a sickening, wet crunch.

Kevin shrieked in agony as his knee buckled backward. His grip on my throat shattered, and the gun discharged harmlessly into the ceiling plaster overhead.

I twisted out of his reach, throwing myself forward onto the floor as Marcus and four tactical officers surged over my body, slamming Kevin onto the hard floor with overwhelming, crushing force.

BOOM.

The gun clattered across the floor, kicked away by an officer’s boot. Kevin writhed on the floor under the weight of four armed men, his screams of pain and fury echoing off the bare walls as heavy steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists with final, absolute authority.

Marcus reached down, grabbing my arms and pulling me to my feet, checking my neck and face with frantic urgency. "Maureen! Are you hit? Are you okay?"

May you like

I gasped, drawing in deep, cold lungfuls of air, brushing the shattered glass from my sleeves. I looked down at Kevin, who was pinned against the floor, his face pressed into the dirt and blood on the floorboards, his eyes wide, wild, and helpless.

"I’m fine, Marcus," I said, my voice steady, clear, and absolute. "Take him away."
