Chapter 6 - The Fall of Carol and Ashley

Z

The repercussions of Jack’s downfall rippled through the Walker social circle with the force of a localized earthquake. For years, Carol and Ashley had operated on the periphery of Boston’s high society, sustained entirely by the prestige of the Walker family name and the generous trickle of funds flowing from my late father’s estate.

Without that financial life-support, their constructed reality evaporated overnight.

Five days after the deposition, I sat in the glass-walled conference room at Gerald’s firm, reviewing the forensic audit reports. Gerald slid a crimson-bound ledger across the table.

"Your instinct was correct, Megan," Gerald said, gesturing toward the highlighted line items. "Carol wasn't merely receiving an allowance. Over the last four years, Jack routed over eight hundred thousand dollars from Walker Holdings accounts directly into a dummy consulting firm registered under Ashley’s name, 'C&A Creative Solutions'."

I scanned the rows of fraudulent transfers. "Consulting for what?"

"Nothing," Gerald replied plainly. "It was a shell account used to pay off Ashley’s credit cards, cover private school tuitions for her children, and fund Carol’s lavish lifestyle—including a quarter-million-dollar renovation on her suburban estate last spring."

Before I could answer, the glass doors of the reception lobby chimed.

Through the tinted glass, I saw Carol and Ashley rushing past the secretary. Carol looked completely unraveled. Her hair, usually meticulously coiffed, was slightly messy, and her eyes were bloodshot behind dark sunglasses. Ashley followed close behind, holding a stack of unopened envelopes, looking terrified.

"Megan!" Carol demanded, pushing past the security guard who tried to intercept them. "You need to fix this right now! This has gone far enough!"

Gerald stood up smoothly, placing a hand on his blazer. "Mrs. Walker, this is a private law firm. You cannot barg—"

"Quiet, Gerald!" Carol snapped, turning her venomous gaze on me. "Megan, do you have any idea what you've done? The bank just frozen my personal accounts! The contractors at my house walked off the job this morning because their checks bounced! And Ashley got a notice that her kids' tuition payments have been revoked!"

I stayed seated, taking a slow sip of black coffee. The terror in Carol’s voice was unmistakable. It was the frantic rage of someone who had never known consequence.

"Your accounts were frozen because they were funded by money Jack stole from my trust," I said, my tone flat and controlled. "And the consulting firm, Ashley... Gerald filed a criminal complaint for money laundering this morning."

Ashley gasped, dropping the envelopes onto the carpet. "Money laundering? Megan, no! Jack told me it was just tax restructuring! He said it was legal!"

"Ignorance of the law isn't a defense when you sign tax returns for a fraudulent LLC, Ashley," Gerald noted coldly.

Carol stepped closer to the table, her hands trembling as she leaned over my chair. "We are family, Megan! Ten years! I treated you like a daughter!"

"You treated me like an bank," I corrected, looking up into her furious, aging face. "When you sat in my kitchen crying about your medical tests last year, I spent three weeks finding you the best specialists in New England. I paid their retainers. And all the while, you knew your son was sleeping with another woman and planning to steal my inheritance."

"It was Jack's life!" Carol screamed, losing all semblance of high-society decorum. "A mother protects her son! You think you can just destroy our lives over a mistake? You cold, heartless bitch!"

"Carol," Gerald warned, his voice dropping an octave into a razor-sharp growl. "One more insult, and I will have the bailiffs remove you in handcuffs for civil trespass."

Ashley collapsed into one of the leather chairs, burying her face in her hands, sobbing heavily. "Megan, please... think of the kids. They didn't do anything wrong. Don't ruin our lives."

I looked at Ashley. For a second, a flicker of human pity stirred in my chest. But then I remembered her at the airport—standing quietly beside her mother, guiding her children away while Jack’s mistress stood beside them, perfectly comfortable, perfectly accepted.

"You should have thought of your children before you helped your brother steal from the family that fed them," I said softly. "The audit is complete, Ashley. Every dollar you took from 'C&A Creative Solutions' must be repaid to the trust. If you liquidate your house and sell your luxury cars, you might avoid jail time."

Carol stared at me as if looking at a stranger. "You're a monster."

May you like

"No, Carol," I said, standing up and buttoning my jacket. "I'm just a Walker. And it's time you learned what that actually means."

I walked past them without looking back, leaving Carol screaming accusations at Gerald as the security guards finally escorted them down the private elevator.
