Chapter 9 - Five Years Later

The spring breeze carrying the soft fragrance of cherry blossoms swept through the historic courtyards of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Hundreds of folding chairs lined the manicured lawn, filled with proud parents, distinguished faculty, and visiting dignitaries under the bright May sunshine.
In the front row reserved for major university benefactors and honor guests sat Claire Hale.
At fifty-three, Claire possessed an aura of quiet, regal confidence that drew admiration from everyone in her presence. Her tailored ivory silk dress coat was paired with a delicate gold necklace, and her dark hair was styled with elegant simplicity. Over the last five years, Hale Heritage Hospitality had not only recovered from the minor tremors of the past but had expanded into a international powerhouse, acquiring luxury boutique hotels in London, Paris, and Kyoto. Under Claire’s vision as Chairman and CEO, the company’s valuation had nearly doubled, establishing her as one of the most respected figures in modern global hospitality.
Beside her sat Ethan, now twenty-four. Dressed in a crisp navy suit, Ethan had graduated with honors from Northwestern Law School the previous spring and was currently completing his clerkship for a federal appellate judge in D.C. His face carried the mature strength of a man who had faced family crisis early in life and emerged grounded, focused, and deeply devoted to his mother.
"She’s next," Ethan whispered, leaning over with a proud smile and pointing toward the stage where the graduating class of international relations and political economy stood lined up.
The dean stepped up to the microphone, his voice echoing clearly through the speaker system.
"Summa Cum Laude, recipient of the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence, Chloe Elizabeth Hale."
Claire felt a warmth bloom in her chest as Chloe stepped across the platform. At twenty-two, Chloe looked breathtakingly bright and confident. Her dark eyes sparkled as she accepted her diploma, turning toward the audience. She didn't search the crowd aimlessly; her eyes went straight to her mother and brother. Chloe raised her diploma slightly, flashing a brilliant, triumphant smile meant entirely for Claire.
When the ceremony concluded and the crowd spilled across the sunlit plaza, Chloe hurried through the sea of black gowns, throwing her arms around Claire in a fierce hug.
"You did it, sweetheart," Claire murmured softly, kissing her daughter’s cheek. "I am so proud of you."
"I did it because of you, Mom," Chloe said, pulling back to look into Claire’s eyes. "Every single late night, every essay... I kept thinking about how hard you fought to give us this future."
Ethan wrapped his arms around both of them, laughing. "Alright, honors graduate, save some emotion for the dinner table. Mom reserved the entire rooftop terrace at the Hay-Adams."
"Of course she did," Chloe smiled warmly, sliding her arm through Claire’s. "It’s a Hale property, after all."
As they began walking toward the university gates, Ethan checked his phone briefly, a slight frown crossing his features before he caught himself.
Claire noticed immediately. "What is it, Ethan?"
Ethan hesitated, exchanging a quick look with Chloe before turning to his mother. "A notification from the Illinois Department of Corrections. His mandatory supervision period ended this morning. He’s officially completed his parole."
The mention of Graham didn't provoke anger or sadness in Claire’s heart anymore. It felt like reading an footnote in a book she had finished reading years ago.
"I see," Claire said calmly. "I hope he finds a way to build a quiet, honest life."
"Have you heard anything about where he is?" Chloe asked gently, her voice devoid of malice, carrying only the detached curiosity one might hold for an old acquaintance.

"Jonathan Mercer mentioned a few months ago that he was working at a regional logistics office outside Peoria," Ethan answered quietly. "Doing entry-level inventory auditing. He lives in a small rented apartment near the railway station."
Claire nodded slowly, looking up at the historic brick buildings surrounding them. "He made his choices. Today is about yours. Let's enjoy our evening."
