Chapter 12 - The Shadow Proxy

The crushing defeat of Marcus Vance in Manhattan Supreme Court sent Astraea Capital Partners into a tailspin. Within forty-eight hours, institutional investors in Marcus’s European hedge fund, panicked by the perjury inquiry and the public humiliation, began pulling their capital reserves. Forced to cover his mounting margin calls, Marcus was compelled to liquidate his nine point nine percent stake in Aegis Capital at a massive loss, selling the shares directly back to our corporate treasury.

The threat of the Vance family was finally, permanently extinguished.

By the winter of 2026, Aegis Capital had completed its transition into a global leader in ethical investment. The company was no longer associated with family scandals, corporate fraud, or messy court battles. It was recognized worldwide as an operational powerhouse driven by integrity, innovation, and long-term vision.

Yet, amidst the triumph, my personal life was undergoing its own profound shift.

On a cold, clear Friday evening in December, Julian and I walked through Central Park after leaving a late board meeting. The city lights twinkled through the snow-laden branches of the trees, casting a magical amber glow across the stone paths.

Julian was quiet, walking with his hands buried in the pockets of his dark wool overcoat.

"You've been quiet all evening, Julian," I said, my breath fogging in the crisp night air. "We just closed the largest sustainable energy deal in the firm's history. You should be celebrating."

Julian stopped near the Bow Bridge, looking out over the frozen lake. He turned to face me, his dark eyes filled with a quiet, intense warmth that made my heart skip a beat.

"I’m not thinking about the deal, Sarah," Julian said softly. "I’m thinking about the last two years."

I stood still, wrapping my scarf tighter around my neck. "What about them?"

"Two years ago, you walked out of that country club in Greenwich with nothing but your son's hand in yours and a flash drive in your pocket," Julian said, taking a step closer to me. "I watched you rebuild your life from the ground up. I watched you dismantle an empire that tried to destroy you, and I watched you protect Tommy with everything you had."

He reached out, gently taking my gloved hands in his.

"I spent ten years regretting letting you walk away the first time, Sarah," Julian whispered, his voice trembling slightly with emotion. "When Eleanor forced us apart back then, I was too young, too cautious, and too afraid to fight for what I wanted. I promised myself that if I ever got another chance to be in your life, I would never let anything come between us again."

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box. Opening it, a stunning vintage sapphire ring surrounded by delicate brilliant-cut diamonds caught the amber reflections of the city lights.

"I’m not asking you to merge companies, Sarah," Julian said with a soft, nervous smile. "I’m asking you to share a life with me. Will you marry me?"

I looked down at the ring, then up into Julian’s eyes—eyes that had offered me unwavering loyalty, quiet respect, and total partnership through every storm I had faced.

Tears welled up in my eyes, warm against the cold winter air. For years, I had believed that love was a battlefield where women were expected to sacrifice their dignity, their ambitions, and their truth just to keep the peace. But looking at Julian, I realized that true love wasn't about sacrifice or control. It was about standing side by side, equals in every sense of the word.

"Yes," I whispered, a brilliant smile breaking across my face. "Yes, Julian. Absolutely yes."

He slipped the ring onto my finger, pulling me into his arms, kissing me under the falling snow as the lights of Manhattan glowed around us like a blanket of stars.
