Chapter 13 - The Executioner's Key

Eighteen hours remained on Montmirail’s ticking clock.
In a high-security interview room inside the federal penitentiary in Pennsylvania, Daniel Hale sat shackled to a heavy steel table. He looked gaunt, his eyes hollowed out by months of prison life, his former arrogant posture replaced by the slouched posture of a defeated man.
Agent Vance sat across from him, placing a small black metallic drive—retrieved from the seized safe deposit box—on the table between them.
“Your mother set up a secondary extortion trap in Switzerland before her arrest, Daniel,” Agent Vance said plainly. “This hardware token holds the authorization code. We need your biometric passkey to unlock its firmware.”
Daniel looked at the black drive, then up at the two security cameras spinning in the corners of the room. “Where is Emilia?” he rasped, his voice trembling.
The door opened softly, and I stepped into the interrogation room. I wore a tailored black coat, standing tall, radiating an undeniable aura of absolute authority.
Daniel flinched, looking away in shame. “Emilia... they told me you were in Europe.”
“I came back for this, Daniel,” I said, standing at the foot of the table. “Your mother’s final scheme threatens my daughter’s future. Unlocking this drive is the only way to destroy the files permanently.”
Daniel let out a dry, broken laugh. “My mother... even from behind bars, she’s still trying to burn the world down. She ruined my life, Emilia. She convinced me that you were nothing, that I was a genius who deserved everything.”
He looked up at me, tears welling in his red-rimmed eyes. “If I unlock this for you... will you let me see Lily? Just once? Through the glass? Before I get transferred to maximum security?”
The room went completely silent. Agent Vance watched me, waiting for my response.
I walked over to the table and looked down into the eyes of the man who had watched me bleed on a marble floor without a drop of mercy.
“No, Daniel,” I said softly, my voice devoid of anger, containing only absolute, cold reality. “You gave up the right to be her father when you let your mother abuse us. You do not get a reward for fixing a nightmare your family created.”
Daniel’s shoulders slumped, a violent sob wracking his body. He knew there was no leverage left, no negotiation, no charm that could ever bend my iron will.
“Do it for Lily’s safety,” I added coldly. “Because if you don't, I will ensure your mother is transferred to a solitary psychiatric ward in upstate New York for the remainder of her natural life.”
With trembling hands, Daniel reached out his right thumb and pressed it onto the biometric scanner of the metallic drive. A soft green light flashed, followed by a faint electronic beep.
FIRMWARE UNLOCKED. MASTER DECRYPTION PASSCODE GENERATED.
Agent Vance immediately secured the drive in a radiation-shielded pouch.
I turned on my heel and walked toward the door without looking back.

“Emilia!” Daniel cried out behind me, his chains rattling loudly against the steel table. “I’m sorry! I’m so sorry!”
I stepped out into the cold corridor, the heavy iron door slamming shut behind me with a finality that echoed like a tomb.
