Chapter 15 - The Chapel of Secrets

Z
The small town of Galena, Illinois, lay buried beneath two feet of fresh winter snow, its historic brick buildings quiet under the grey morning sky.
At 7:00 a.m., our black SUV pulled up to the edge of a snow-covered hill overlooking the valley. Sitting alone amidst a grove of barren oak trees was an old, abandoned stone chapel built in the late 1800s—the Bennett family’s private ancestral property, long forgotten by local real estate registries.
Parked in the snow surrounding the church were three unmarked heavy construction trucks and a black armored van. Four men in heavy cold-weather gear were setting up industrial drilling equipment near the chapel's stone foundation.
"They're preparing to breach the subterranean floor," Detective Bell said, peering through a pair of high-powered binoculars from the passenger seat. "They have heavy concrete saws and thermal cutting gear."
"How many men?" I asked from the back seat, checking my phone. The encrypted foundation link was still monitoring the local signal signatures.
"Six outdoor operators," Bell reported. "Likely two more inside the structure. Armed with concealed sidearms. Naomi, did local law enforcement receive our request for tactical backup?"
"Galena Police are fifteen minutes away," Naomi reported from her laptop. "Roads are slick due to the storm."
"We don't have fifteen minutes," I said, looking at the mechanical drill being hoisted off the back of the lead truck. "If that thermal cutter touches the stone foundation, whatever digital hardware is buried beneath will be destroyed or seized."
"We move in now," Bell said, racking the slide of his service weapon. "Stay behind me."
We stepped out of the SUV into the freezing wind, using the thick snowdrifts and oak trees as cover as we approached the rear entrance of the stone chapel.
Bell moved with practiced tactical precision, slipping through a broken stained-glass window at the back of the altar, with Allison and me following close behind.
The interior of the chapel was freezing, dusty, and silent except for the muffled roar of the industrial engines outside. Decayed wooden pews lined the central aisle, leading to a stone pulpit covered in cobwebs.
Standing near the altar, holding a high-frequency ground-penetrating radar scanner, was a tall, thin man in a leather coat. He had sharp, hawkish features and graying hair pulled back into a tight ponytail.
"Fascinating," the man spoke aloud to himself, staring at the scanner screen. "Elaine buried the server directly inside the original cornerstone of the building. Pure genius."
"Drop the scanner and step away from the altar!" Detective Bell shouted, stepping out from behind a stone pillar with his gun pointed straight at the man's chest.
The man didn't panic. He slowly turned around, looking at Bell, then looking past him until his eyes settled on me.
"Natalie Bennett," the man smiled—a thin, dry smile. "I was wondering if you would arrive in time. My name is Dr. Aris Thorne. I was your mother’s senior project supervisor at MIT thirty years ago."
"You built the shadow protocol," I said, stepping into the center aisle.
"We built a revolutionary financial tool, Miss Bennett!" Dr. Thorne corrected me, his eyes lighting up with fanatical intensity. "A system designed to redistribute fraction-of-a-cent global wealth back into private technological research! But your mother grew soft. She developed a conscience when she realized how the protocol could be abused by men like Julian Vance."
"She didn't grow soft," I said, stepping closer. "She realized you were building an invisible dictatorship that stole from real people to fund your private greed."
"And look what her conscience got her!" Thorne laughed bitterly. "A grave in Chicago, a ruined husband, and two daughters fighting over corporate scraps!"
Thorne reached into his coat pocket.
BANG!
Bell fired a warning shot that shattered the wooden pulpit above Thorne’s head, sending splinters flying through the air!
"Hands on your head, Thorne!" Bell roared.
Before Bell could advance, the heavy wooden front doors of the chapel were slammed open, and two armed operators carrying submachine guns burst inside, aiming their weapons straight at us!
"Drop the weapon, cop!" one of the operators barked!
Bell was forced to step back behind a stone pillar for cover as the operators took defensive positions along the central aisle.
"Dr. Thorne, we have the thermal cutter ready!" an operator yelled.
"Cut the cornerstone!" Thorne commanded, backing toward the rear altar wall. "Take the server and eliminate them!"
"No!" Allison screamed from behind me.
She grabbed an old, iron church candlestick from a broken pew and hurled it with all her strength toward the lead operator! The heavy iron bar struck the operator in the face, knocking him backward onto the floor and causing his weapon to discharge wildly into the ceiling!
TAK-TAK-TAK-TAK!
Plaster and dust rained down from the ancient wooden roof!
Bell seized the distraction, swinging around the stone pillar and firing three precise rounds, neutralizing the second operator instantly!
Thorne let out a curse, grabbing a small metal briefcase from the altar and sprinting toward a hidden trapdoor behind the altar screen!
"Natalie, get him!" Bell yelled, reloading his weapon as he engaged the remaining men outside.
I didn't hesitate. I sprinted up the altar steps, vaulting over the fallen stone debris, and dove through the open trapdoor right behind Dr. Thorne!
We tumbled down a steep flight of narrow stone stairs, crashing onto the cold dirt floor of the chapel’s subterranean crypt.
My breath left my lungs in a painful gasp, but I forced myself up onto my knees.
Ten feet away, Dr. Thorne was scrambling across the dirt, reaching for a sleek, silver metallic cylinder embedded inside a hollowed-out stone niche in the crypt wall.
The cold-storage server. My mother’s original work.
"It’s mine!" Thorne screamed, his fingers locking onto the metallic cylinder. "This contains the source code for every private financial network on Earth!"
"It doesn't belong to you, Thorne!" I shouted, dragging myself forward and grabbing his ankle, pulling him backward onto the dirt!
Thorne kicked back wildly, his boot striking my shoulder, but I held on with everything I had, wrestling him for control of the cylinder.
"You don't understand!" Thorne shrieked, his face twisted in madness. "With this code, we control the global economy! We can bring down governments! We can rebuild the world!"
"My mother died to stop you!" I roared, pulling myself onto his chest and slamming my fist hard against his jaw!
Thorne gasped, his grip slipping from the cylinder.
I grabbed the heavy metallic server, pulled it from the wall, and slammed the hard steel casing directly against Thorne’s forehead!
Thorne went instantly limp, collapsing back onto the dirt floor, unconscious.
I sat on the cold floor of the crypt, clutching the heavy silver cylinder to my chest, my heart pounding like a war drum in the silent darkness.
High above, the sound of sirens echoed through the snowbound valley as Galena police cruisers and federal backup arrived at the chapel.
I looked down at the cylinder in my hands.
A small, etched inscription was carved into the silver steel at the base of the server—written in my mother’s elegant handwriting:
May you like
“For Natalie and Allison. Protect the light.”
Tears finally welled in my eyes, falling onto the cold steel as the dark shadows of the past were extinguished once and for all.
