Chapter 6 - The Cracking Foundation

Z
The arrest of Ethan Cole on federal extortion charges shattered the fragile alliance between Gregory Vance and his stepdaughter. Within forty-eight hours of the midnight confrontation in our boardroom, the United States Attorney’s Office unsealed a comprehensive, forty-eight-count indictment charging Gregory Vance with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, corporate espionage, and money laundering through offshore Cayman entities. Novus Dynamics collapsed before it had processed a single legitimate transaction.
By Wednesday morning, our Series B funding round closed successfully at a staggering twenty-five million dollars, valuing Bennett Event Systems well north of one hundred and twenty million. Aegis was celebrated across Wall Street as the gold standard in enterprise security. We had won on every conceivable front.
Yet, as I sat in my corner office watching the afternoon sunlight reflect off the glass skyscrapers of Midtown, an uncomfortable intuition nagged at me. In high-stakes corporate warfare, when an empire falls as violently as Gregory Vance's, the collateral damage rarely confines itself to balance sheets. Desperate, entitled people who have lost their social standing do not fade quietly into oblivion; they seek a target for their humiliation.
At 3:30 PM, my direct private line rang. The caller ID was unlisted.
I answered and placed it on speaker. "Claire Bennett."
"Claire."
The voice on the other end was hoarse, ragged, and trembling with an unstable mixture of rage and terror. It was Vanessa.
"Vanessa," I said coldly. "If this is regarding your restitution obligations, contact Rachel Monroe’s office. You are strictly barred from communicating with me directly."
"Gregory locked me out of the townhouse, Claire!" she sobbed, hyperventilating into the receiver. "The feds froze every single bank account. They took my car, they seized my jewelry, they’re repossessing the apartment! My friends won't return my calls. My own mother flew to Switzerland to protect her own trusts and left me with nothing! Do you understand what you’ve done to me? You’ve completely obliterated my entire existence!"
"You obliterated your own existence the morning you helped Ethan forge corporate documents to fund an eight-hundred-thousand-dollar fantasy life," I answered evenly. "You wanted the luxury of my company without doing the work. You wanted the status without the accountability. You made a series of calculated criminal choices, Vanessa. These are merely the mathematical consequences."
"You think you’re so untouchable, don't you?" Vanessa’s voice abruptly dropped an octave, the weeping giving way to a chilling, venomous clarity. "You think because you have your algorithms and your millions that you’re safe from the people whose lives you ruined. Ethan was an idiot. He thought code and contracts could beat you. But I know what you actually care about, Claire."
A sharp prickle of alarm ran down my spine. "What are you talking about?"
"Your mother," Vanessa whispered, the sound of her breath scraping against the microphone like sandpaper. "Evelyn Bennett. She’s currently enjoying her afternoon tea at the Whispering Pines Senior Estate in Greenwich, isn't she? Lovely facility. Impeccable gardens. Terrible perimeter security for an unlisted visitor bearing a signed family package."
My heart slammed against my ribs, but my voice remained absolute ice. "If you touch my mother, Vanessa, there is nowhere on this earth you can hide from me."
"I don't need to hide anymore, Claire," Vanessa laughed—a frantic, broken sound that signaled a complete psychological breakdown. "I have nothing left to lose. Come to Greenwich. Alone. No lawyers, no police, no security. If I see a single flashing light, the package I left in Evelyn’s suite gets opened. You have forty-five minutes."
The line went dead.
I didn't hesitate. I didn't call Rachel, and I didn't wait for Marcus. I bypassed the elevators, took the private executive stairwell down to the underground garage, and stepped inside my Porsche. As the twin-turbo engine roared to life, I synced my phone to the dashboard and dialed one number.
It wasn't 911. It was the private direct cell of Detective Marcus Callahan, the head of the Greenwich Special Investigations Unit who had handled the security protocols for my mother’s estate following Ethan’s initial trial.
"Callahan," the deep voice answered on the second ring.
May you like
"Detective," I said, accelerating out of the parking garage and tearing onto the FDR Drive north. "Vanessa Vance is having an acute psychotic break and is currently breaching Whispering Pines with an unknown threat. I am forty minutes out. Lock down the perimeter silently. Do not approach her room until I am on site."
"Understood, Ms. Bennett. We’re moving now."
