Zero nine

Chapter 6 - The Pursuit on Route 9

Detective Vance’s head whipped around, his eyes locking onto the dark SUV trailing us through the blinding curtain of rain.

"Step on it, Miller," Vance ordered the driver sharply. "Lose them."

"Copy that, chief," the driver replied, slamming his foot onto the accelerator. The engine roared, and the heavy vehicle surged forward along the winding asphalt of Route 9, the tires spraying thick sheets of water into the night.

Behind us, the dark SUV didn't slow down. Instead, its high beams suddenly flashed on, blinding white light flooding our rear-view mirrors. A second set of headlights appeared out of the darkness right behind it. They weren't just following us; they were hunting us.

"They tracked our vehicle," Vance cursed under his breath, drawing his sidearm and checking the magazine. "Someone inside the precinct leaked our departure. Tactical team, weapons ready!"

The two officers in the backseat alongside Caroline and me immediately unholstered their weapons, their faces tense. Caroline squeezed my hand so hard her nails bit into my skin, her breath coming in short, terrified gasps.

"Mom..." she whimpered, pulling closer to me. "They're not going to let us reach that bank, are they?"

"They won't get to you, Caroline," I said through gritted teeth, wrapping my body around hers, using myself as a human shield. "I lost you once. I am not losing you again."

Suddenly, a loud CRACK echoed through the night, followed by the terrifying sound of glass shattering. The rear window of our SUV spider-webbed, a small bullet hole appearing near the center.

"SHOTS FIRED! SHOTS FIRED!" Vance yelled into his radio, his voice strained above the roar of the storm. "We are under active fire on Route 9, heading north toward the Ridge County line! Requesting immediate air support and backup!"

"Static on the line, Detective! We can't reach dispatch!" the driver yelled back, swerving wildly to avoid another volley of gunfire. "They're jamming our frequencies!"

The dark SUV behind us accelerated rapidly, coming up alongside our left rear bumper. Through the rain-streaked, tinted glass of the pursuing vehicle, I could see the silhouette of a man holding a heavy automatic rifle.

"PIT MANEUVER!" Vance screamed. "BRACE YOURSELVES!"

The enemy vehicle rammed hard into our rear quarter panel. The impact was violent, sending our heavy SUV sliding sideways across the slick, water-logged pavement. Tires shrieked against the asphalt as our driver fought frantically for control. The world spun in a dizzying frenzy of flashing headlights, dark trees, and torrents of rain.

"HOLD ON!"

Our SUV clipped the metal guardrail with a sickening screech of tearing metal, sparks flying into the night air like fireworks. The force of the collision threw me against the door, my head slamming hard against the window frame. Pain exploded behind my eyes, vision swimming with bright spots, but I held onto Caroline with everything I had.

With a final, desperate turn of the wheel, our driver straightened the vehicle out, slamming his foot back onto the gas. We broke away from the guardrail, plunging down a steep, unpaved logging road that branched off the main highway into the dense forest.

"Are you okay?!" I shouted at Caroline, wiping a line of warm blood that was trickling down my temple from the impact.

"I'm... I'm okay!" she cried out, her face pale with terror.

"Driver, where does this road lead?" Vance asked, his forehead bleeding heavily from a cut.

"It cuts through the old lumber yard!" the driver shouted back, squinting through the cracked windshield as rain poured through the broken rear window. "It connects back to Harbor Ridge from the south! But we've got flat tires on the left side, Detective! We're running on rims!"

The grinding sound of metal scraping against gravel confirmed his words. The vehicle was slowing down rapidly, vibrating violently as the shredded tires disintegrated beneath us.

Behind us, the two dark SUVs turned onto the logging road, their headlights cutting through the dense woods like searchlights.

"We're not going to make it to the safe house," Vance said, his voice dropping into a eerie, calm focus. He looked back at me and Caroline. "When this car stops, you two run into the woods. Follow the stream down the ridge. It leads straight to the back edge of Harbor Ridge town limits. There's a gas station about two miles down."

"We can't leave you!" I protested.

"You have the key, Sarah!" Vance snapped, his eyes fierce. "If they get that key, if they get Caroline, none of this matters! My men and I will hold them off here. You run, and you don't look back until you are inside that bank at dawn!"

The SUV gave a final, sickening shudder and ground to a complete halt near an abandoned timber loading dock.

"GO! NOW!" Vance shouted, throwing his door open and firing three rapid shots toward the oncoming headlights.

I grabbed Caroline by the hand, threw open the rear door, and tumbled out into the mud and blinding rain.
