Chapter 5 - Eviction Notice

I stood beside my car, watching my daughter rush toward me. For months, I had dreaded this confrontation. I had worried that my heart would break, that I would break down crying, or that I would beg for her understanding. But as she stood before me, chest heaving, eyes burning with betrayal and resentment, I felt nothing but an overwhelming, serene stillness.
"Good morning, Lorraine," I said calmly.
"Don't you 'good morning' me!" she yelled, waving her hands wildly toward the moving truck. "Who are these people?! What are they doing here with moving trucks?! Tell me this is a mistake! Tell me you didn't sell the lake house!"
"It isn't a mistake," I said clearly, ensuring every person in that driveway heard my voice. "The house is sold. The transaction closed yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Harrison are the rightful owners now."
Kevin rushed down the driveway, his face purple with rage, pointing an accusatory finger inches from my face. "You crazy old woman! How dare you do this behind our backs?! We had plans for this place! My parents are here from Denver! We invited guests! Do you have any idea how much money I spent upgrading this property?!"
"You didn't upgrade it, Kevin," I said, looking him dead in the eye without flinching. "You renovated my boundaries. You changed my locks without asking. You locked me out of the home my husband built with his hard-earned money and sweat. You treated me like a nuisance in my own life."
"We were trying to help you!" Lorraine cried, tears of rage finally spilling over her mascara. "You were obsessing over Dad! You were stuck in the past! We were taking care of the property so you wouldn't have to worry about it!"
"No, Lorraine," I corrected her gently, yet with an edge of cold steel. "You weren't taking care of me. You were taking over. You sent me legal papers asking me to surrender ownership. You left me voicemails telling me there was 'no room' for me in the house I paid for. You invited strangers into your father's home while telling his widow to stay away."
"That was Kevin's idea!" Lorraine blurted out, turning on her husband in a desperate attempt to deflect.
"Oh, don't you dare throw me under the bus now, Lorraine!" Kevin shouted back, his composure completely disintegrating in front of his wealthy parents. "You wanted this place just as much as I did! You wanted the social status! You told me your mother was too weak to stand up to us!"
Eleanor Whitmore gasped, clutching her designer handbag against her chest. "Kevin! Control yourself!"

"No, Mom! She ruined everything!" Kevin yelled.
Thomas Harrison walked over, his phone already held up to his ear. "Putnam County Sheriff's Department? Yes, I am at 142 Lakeview Drive. I have several unauthorized individuals on my private property refusing to leave and causing a public disturbance. Please dispatch deputies immediately."
