Chapter 5 - Z

The air in the basement instantly transformed from tense to lethal.
Julian’s calm facade shattered. His eyes widened, darting from Clara at the top of the stairs to the narrow basement window high on the far wall. "You stupid bitch," he snarled, dropping his briefcase.
He lunged toward the stairs, raising the taser.
"Clara, look out!" I screamed.
Clara didn't hesitate. With a fierce, guttural cry, she swung the heavy iron fireplace poker downward with all her strength. The heavy iron head caught Julian square across the shoulder with a sickening crack. He roared in pain, the shock device dropping from his hand and clattering across the concrete floor.
Julian stumbled backward, clutching his broken collarbone, but his eyes were filled with desperate, animal rage. He reached into his belt holster, pulling out a compact black handgun.
"Julian, no!" Emily shrieked, backing away into the shadows with Luke.
I didn't think. I reacted with every ounce of maternal instinct left in my aging body. I threw myself onto the floor, grabbing the fallen stun gun, and jammed it directly into Julian’s exposed ankle.
I pressed the trigger.
A loud, blue spark arced through the air. Ten thousand volts of electrical current surged through Julian’s body. He let out an agonizing, choked scream, his muscles convulsing wildly. The handgun flew out of his hand, spinning across the floor and sliding directly beneath Nate’s collapsed body.
Julian collapsed to the floor like a felled oak, twitching and gasping for air.
"Nate! The gun!" I yelled, scrambling toward my son.
Nate was fighting the sedative with everything he had. His eyes were bloodshot, sweat pouring down his face. He dragged his heavy, numb arm across the floor, his fingers desperately clawing at the concrete until his hand finally closed around the grip of the pistol.
With superhuman effort, Nate rolled onto his back, raising the heavy handgun with both hands, pointing it directly at Julian’s chest. His hands were shaking violently, but his eyes were locked on the man who had destroyed his brother and poisoned his life.
"Move..." Nate rasped through gritted teeth, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Move... and I swear to God... I'll put you in the ground next to Adrian."
Julian lay on the floor, panting, bleeding, staring up into the barrel of the gun. The arrogant, powerful executive was gone, replaced by a terrified coward staring into the eyes of a man who had nothing left to lose.
"Nate, don't!" Clara cried, running down the stairs and grabbing his arm gentle enough not to set off the trigger. "Don't do it, Nate! Don't ruin your life for him! Luke needs a father, not a martyr!"
At the mention of Luke’s name, Nate’s chest heaved. Tears cut through the dust and sweat on his cheeks. Slowly, painfully, his finger slipped off the trigger.
In the distance, the wail of police sirens began to echo through the rainy night, growing louder and closer with every passing second. Red and blue lights flashed through the high basement windows, painting the damp concrete walls in violent, shifting colors.
Emily sank to her knees in the corner, holding Luke against her chest, weeping uncontrollably. "I'm sorry," she sobbed toward Nate, her voice broken and pathetic. "Nate... I'm so sorry... he threatened to ruin you... he said he'd take everything..."
Nate didn't look at her. He kept the gun aimed at Julian until the heavy boots of state troopers came thundering down the wooden stairs, guns drawn, shouting commands that blurred into a chaotic storm of noise and light.
Officers swarmed the basement. Julian was handcuffed and dragged to his feet, cursing incoherently as he was hauled away. Emily was disarmed of the infant and led away in handcuffs, charged with conspiracy and endangerment.
A female officer carefully took Luke from Emily's arms. The baby was crying, frightened by the loud noises and bright lights.
Nate lay on the floor, his body exhausted, the drug finally overwhelming his strength. The paramedics rushed forward with a gurney, placing an oxygen mask over his face.
As they lifted Nate onto the stretcher, he reached out a limp, trembling hand toward the officer holding the child.
"Give... give me my son..." Nate whispered through the plastic mask.
May you like
The female officer looked at the sergeant, then down at the weeping baby, and finally at the heartbroken man on the gurney. Without a word, she walked over and gently laid Luke onto Nate's chest.
Nate wrapped his heavy arms around the baby, holding him tight against his heart as the paramedics wheeled him out into the rain.
