Zero nine

Chapter 5

If someone were to leak this information to a competing developer, or try to use it to force a high-value buyout of the neighboring land, they would be walking directly into a legal minefield. The pharmacy chain listed in the document was real, but the signature was an expired digital alias, and the terms included a non-disclosure penalty that would bankrupt anyone who used the data for third-party negotiations.

On Thursday night, the legacy account logged in again. The user stayed on the server for eleven minutes—long enough to download the dummy file and log out.

On Friday morning, I received a confirmation from my legal team that a rival firm, Apex Development Group, had suddenly placed an aggressive, unconditional cash offer on Richard Whitmore's contaminated dry-cleaning property. The offer was precisely ten percent lower than the inflated pharmacy buyout figure from our fake document.

Vanessa had sold the stolen information to her father, and her father had used it to bait a bigger fish to save himself.

I spent the rest of the morning reviewing the final structural reports for Oakridge with our engineers. At two o'clock, Julian arrived for our scheduled Sunday preparation call. He looked energized, holding a copy of his firm's signed lease approval.

"We're official, Mom," he said, stepping into my office with a genuine sense of accomplishment. "The directors signed off on the seven-year term. The commission from this deal clears my remaining car lease balance entirely. I'm completely in the black."

I looked at my son, feeling a profound mixture of pride and impending sorrow. He had worked so hard to climb out of the hole his wife had dug for him, and now I was about to drop a bomb that would likely destroy the remnants of his domestic life.

"Sit down, Julian," I said, my voice losing its professional sharpness and turning into something heavy and maternal.

He noticed the shift immediately, his smile faltering as he took his seat. "What’s wrong? Is there a problem with the warehouse space?"

"No. The warehouse space is fine," I said. I pulled out a printed log sheet from our IT department and slid it across the desk toward him. "Do you know what this is?"

He frowned, looking at the technical jargon, the IP addresses, and the timestamped downloads. "No. It looks like a network log."

"It’s a record of someone using your father's old administrative password to steal confidential company files from my server," I explained quietly. "The IP address matches your apartment’s Wi-Fi router. The downloads happened at 11:14 PM on Wednesday and 10:45 PM on Thursday."

Julian’s face went completely bloodless. He stared at the paper, his mouth opening slightly as his mind raced through the implications. "Mom... I swear to you, I didn't do this. I don't even know the password. I was asleep by ten both those nights because of the early shifts."

"I know you didn't do it, Julian," I said gently. "But Vanessa did. She found the black moleskin ledger Edward left in the upstairs desk drawer."

He pressed his palms against his eyes, his shoulders trembling. "Why would she do that? Why can't she just leave us alone?"

"Because her father tried to sell me his contaminated dry-cleaning site on Eleventh Street to cover his debts, and I told him no," I said. "Vanessa stole the Oakridge layout files to give her father leverage. They thought they were selling proprietary intelligence to Apex Development Group to force an early buyout."

Julian let out a sharp, ragged laugh that sounded like it was torn from his throat. "She told me she was staying up late to work on her boutique store's social media. She was sitting right across from me at the counter... stealing from you."

He looked up, his eyes red and brimming with tears. "What are you going to do, Mom? Are you going to call the police?"

"The information she stole was a dummy file, Julian. We tracked her login and fed her false data," I revealed. "The offer Apex made on her father's land is based on a lie. When Apex discovers the pharmacy lease is a fake, they will sue Richard Whitmore for fraudulent misrepresentation and rescission of contract. He’ll lose the property, his remaining savings, and his reputation."

Julian shook his head, a single tear spilling over. "And Vanessa?"

"Vanessa signed her name as the witness and notary on the disclosure documents her father submitted to Apex this morning," I said, sliding a second document across the table—a copy obtained by our legal division through our network of title agents. "She didn't just steal from me, Julian. She committed corporate fraud to help her family. If Apex pushes for criminal charges, she will be named in the indictment."

The room went completely silent. The weight of his wife’s choices landed squarely on my son’s shoulders. For two years, he had allowed her to navigate their lives through manipulation and quiet cruelty, but this was no longer a matter of a canceled birthday dinner or a missed utility bill. This was the edge of a cliff.

"What do I do?" he whispered, looking at me with the absolute vulnerability of a child who had completely lost his way.

"You have to decide who you are, Julian," I told him, reaching across the desk to place my hand over his trembling fingers. "You can try to cover for her again, hide the truth, and sink with their ship. Or you can stand up, speak the truth to the investigators, and save yourself. I can protect my son. I cannot protect a co-conspirator."
