Chapter 7 - The Foreclosure Notice

Z

Three months passed.

Autumn bled into early winter, bringing a crisp, freezing air to the city. My life had settled into an unfamiliar, peaceful rhythm. Without the heavy financial drain of supporting three full-grown adults, my savings account grew exponentially. I took up yoga, bought myself new winter boots, and hired a decorator to redesign my apartment into a bright, airy sanctuary that felt entirely my own.

I had cut off contact with almost every member of my extended family who had taken Dad’s side, keeping lines of communication open only with my Uncle Thomas in California. He had become a quiet pillar of support, checking in on me weekly and offering sage advice on setting firm emotional boundaries.

Then, on a dreary Tuesday afternoon in late November, a large brown envelope arrived at my office.

It was sent by a legal firm representing the local county court. Inside was a summons to appear as a witness in a civil proceedings case, accompanied by a letter from Uncle Thomas.

I called Thomas immediately.

"Hey, Emma," Thomas’s deep, calm voice resonated through the speaker. "I take it you got the paperwork?"

"What is this, Thomas? Why am I being summoned as a witness?"

Thomas sighed heavily over the line. "Richard’s world has completely unraveled. After you cut off the cash flow, he couldn't pay the mortgage. He tried to get a personal loan, but his credit score was shot because of outstanding debts he had built up in secret. The bank initiated foreclosure proceedings on the house last month."

I took a deep breath. "And the court summons?"

"Your mother filed for legal separation, Emma."

I stood frozen beside my desk. "Mom did what?"

"Eleanor finally snapped," Thomas explained. "When the sheriff served the foreclosure notice on their front door, Richard went ballistic. He blamed her, he blamed Kylie, he threw furniture across the living room. Eleanor finally realized that without your money acting as a buffer, Richard’s rage was focused entirely on her. She packed a suitcase, moved into a small rented apartment across town, and filed for separation. She’s suing him for spousal support and half of his remaining assets."

"Why am I a witness?"

"Richard’s defense lawyer is claiming that the financial ruin of the household was caused by fraud—specifically alleging that you embezzled funds from his personal accounts, leaving them unable to pay their mortgage, and that Eleanor was complicit," Thomas said, anger seeping into his tone. "He’s trying to drag you into a courtroom to force you to pay back all the money you 'stole' from him over the years."

A bitter, cold anger ignited deep within my chest. He wasn't satisfied with exploiting me for years. He wasn't satisfied with humiliating me. Now, faced with absolute ruin, my father was attempting to framed me as a thief in a court of law to force me to pay for his home.

"He really thinks he can lie to a judge?" I asked, my voice deadly calm.

"He’s desperate, Emma. Cornered rats bite everything in sight," Thomas warned. "His lawyer is a sleazy bottom-feeder who specializes in high-conflict family divorces. They're banking on you being too afraid of a public trial to show up. They think you'll settle out of court and pay off his mortgage just to avoid the drama."

I looked out my office window at the gray skyline of the city. A small, cold smile formed on my lips.

"They're severely underestimating me," I said. "When is the court date?"

"December 12th."

"Tell my attorney to prepare the heavy artillery, Thomas," I said. "I’m not settling anything. I’m going to stand in that courtroom and show the judge every single bank statement, every Zelle transfer, and every tax document from the last five years."

"He’s going to try to break you on the stand, kiddo," Thomas said gently.

"He used up all his power over me the night he posted that video," I replied. "Now, he’s just a man who owes money he doesn't have."
