Zero nine

Chapter 9 - THE FINAL BALANCE SHEET

A gunshot shattered the roar of the jet engines.

Pain exploded, but it wasn't mine.

Marcus staggered backward, his eyes wide with shock as his pistol slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the wet concrete. A dark red stain immediately began spreading across the crisp white fabric of his dress shirt beneath his trench coat.

He looked past me toward the perimeter fence.

Positioned on top of a industrial shipping container fifty yards away was a federal sniper, his high-powered rifle trained directly on the tarmac.

Within seconds, the dark night sky was torn open by the deafening chop of tactical helicopter blades. Searchlights cut through the rain, blinding the ground crew and bathing the Gulfstream jet in white light.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! GET ON THE GROUND NOW!" blared a loudspeaker from the lead chopper as it hovered just thirty feet above the runway.

Dozens of armored tactical vehicles burst through the ruined perimeter fence, flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the wet pavement. Fully armed FBI SWAT officers poured out, securing the tarmac, disarming Marcus’s private security guards, and surrounding the jet within seconds.

Agent David Vance stepped out of the lead tactical vehicle, his weapon drawn, moving quickly to place himself between me and the wounded Marcus.

"Secure the perimeter!" Agent Vance shouted to his team. "Get a medical unit out here for the suspect!"

Marcus collapsed to his knees in a deep puddle, clutching his bleeding shoulder, his breath coming in ragged, painful gasps. The silver case containing his offshore bearer bonds fell open beside him, thousands of high-value paper certificates spilling out into the muddy rain, blowing away across the tarmac like useless trash.

I stepped around Agent Vance, walking slowly until I stood directly over my uncle.

Marcus looked up at me, his silver hair plastered to his forehead by the rain, his face pale and broken. The terrifying, shadowy mastermind who had controlled international financial empires for forty years was now nothing more than a bleeding, defeated old man kneeling in the mud.

"You... you ruined everything..." Marcus choked out, blood bubbling at the corner of his lips. "Forty years of work... gone... because of a girl who counts numbers..."

"I don't just count numbers, Marcus," I said, kneeling down so I was eye-level with him, my voice dripping with cold, absolute finality. "I balance the books. And your account was way past due."

Two FBI medics rushed forward, pulling Marcus onto a stretcher and applying pressure to his gunshot wound before wheeling him toward a waiting emergency vehicle under heavy federal guard.

Agent Vance walked up beside me, putting a heavy, protective hand on my shoulder. "Samuel Price made it to the field office ten minutes ago, Elena. The ledgers are safe. The Department of Justice has already begun issuing emergency arrest warrants for eighty-four individuals linked to Marcus’s network, including three foreign ministers."

"And Dad’s murder?" I asked, my voice trembling as the overwhelming weight of the last forty-eight hours finally crashed down upon me.

"We swept the ICU records at the hospital," Agent Vance revealed quietly. "We found security footage of Marcus’s personal physician entering your father’s room at 3:15 AM on the night he died. The doctor has already been taken into custody at his home in Evanston. He’s talking. He admitted Marcus ordered the lethal injection to force the execution of the forged Bahamian will."

I closed my eyes, letting the freezing rain wash the dirt, blood, and tears from my face.

Dad hadn't died in vain. His forty-year silent war was finally over, and the truth had won.
