Chapter 4

I froze, my fingers clutching my car keys so tightly the metal dug painfully into my palm. The headlights cast long, menacing shadows across the wet pavement.
"What are you doing here, Jacob?" I asked, my voice laced with venom, though my heart was hammering violently against my chest. "Are you following me?"
Jacob sighed softly, resting his wrists on the steering wheel. "Following you? No, Sophie. I was just worried about you. A mutual friend mentioned you took time off work. I was concerned you were spiraling."
"Don't lie to me," I snapped, stepping back toward my own vehicle. "You sent that email to my company. You tried to get me fired."
Jacob’s smile faltered, replaced by a look of hurt confusion so convincing that for a fraction of a second, an outsider might have believed him. "An email? I don't know what you're talking about. But if people at your office are noticing things too... maybe it's time you stop blaming me and start accepting that you need help."
The level of audacity was staggering. Standing in a rain-soaked parking lot outside a police station, he was still trying to run the exact same mental game on me.
"I filed a police report, Jacob," I said clearly, pointing a finger at his car. "IT is tracing the IP address right now. If that email leads back to you, your clean little life and your precious family name are going to be dragged right through the dirt."
For the first time, the calm mask slipped. Jacob’s jaw tightened, his knuckles turning white on the steering wheel. The cool, detached demeanor vanished, revealing the volatile, controlling reality beneath.
"You really think you're clever, don't you?" he said, his voice dropping an octave, losing all its warmth. "You think you can just walk away from me after everything I did for you? I gave you structure. I gave you a standard to live up to. You were nothing before me, Sophie—just another messy, disorganized woman living a mediocre life."
"I was happy before I met you," I fired back. "And I’m going to be even happier now that you’re gone."
"You're delusional," Jacob spat, leaning out the window. "You think anyone else will want you? When they find out what you're really like beneath that pretty face? Good luck, Sophie. You'll realize soon enough that no one else has the patience I had."
He slammed his foot on the accelerator, the tires screeching on the wet asphalt as his SUV sped out of the parking lot and vanished into the night.
I stood there alone in the pouring rain, trembling from a mixture of rage and adrenaline. But beneath the fear, a new feeling was taking hold: certainty. I knew who my enemy was now. He was no longer a mysterious romantic partner with strange habits; he was a bitter, insecure man who couldn't stand losing control.
The next morning, I didn't wait for the police or HR to act. I hired a private investigator named Ray Vance, a retired detective recommended by Clara’s family.
Ray’s office was small, cluttered with file folders, and smelled strongly of stale coffee. He listened intently as I laid out the entire history: Jacob’s sudden demands, his family's bizarre "purity" ideology, the anonymous corporate sabotage, and the encounter in the parking lot.
"Classic control freak," Ray said, leaning back in his squeaky leather chair and chewing on an unlit toothpick. "Men like this don't handle rejection well. They build a narrative in their head where they are the savior, and when you reject the salvation, they try to destroy the asset so no one else can have it."
"Can you prove he sent the email?" I asked desperately.
"If he used a public Wi-Fi network or a VPN, it might take some digging," Ray admitted. "But guys like Jacob usually make mistakes because they think they're smarter than everyone else. They reuse passwords, they use personal devices on home networks, or they talk to people they shouldn't."
Ray leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk. "If we want to stop him, we need more than just a defense, Sophie. We need leverage. We need to find out what he’s hiding."
"What do you mean?"
"People who are obsessed with purity and cleanliness usually have dirty secrets of their own," Ray said with a cynical grin. "Let me look into Jacob and his family's background. The father, Arthur—what does he do?"
"He’s a senior partner at a private wealth management firm," I recalled. "Very prominent in local charity boards."
"Right. Prominent, wealthy, obsessed with image," Ray nodded. "Give me forty-eight hours. Let me see what pops up when I start digging into the family tree."
While Ray went to work, I decided to take back control of my professional life. I requested a meeting with HR and the executive management team at my firm. Instead of hiding from the embarrassing email, I confronted it head-on. I presented Dr. Lewis’s medical evaluation, the police report I had filed, and a timeline of Jacob’s harassment.
The HR director was visibly moved, and Marcus stood firmly in my corner.
"We stand by you, Sophie," the executive VP declared. "This company will not be manipulated by a bitter ex-partner. Our legal counsel will issue a formal cease-and-desist letter to Jacob immediately."
For the first time in weeks, I felt a burden lift from my shoulders. But my relief was short-lived.

Two days later, Ray Vance called me. His tone was no longer relaxed; it was sharp and urgent.
"Sophie, you need to come to my office right now," Ray said. "I found something on Arthur and Jacob. And it’s a hell of a lot bigger than just an anonymous email."
