Chapter 9 - THE DYING CONFESSION

Z
The heart monitor’s shrill, panicked alarm blared through the small ICU room, its rhythmic tones escalating into a terrifying frenzy. Beep-beep-beep-beep!
Nurse Gable and a resident doctor burst through the door, pushing past Tessa and Cole.
"Vitals are spiking! Systolic pressure is dropping fast!" the doctor shouted, reaching for the emergency medical cart. "Clear the room! Get the family out now!"
"No!" I shouted, locking my wheelchair wheels right beside the bed, refusing to budge. "He's awake! Grandpa!"
Grandpa’s pale, bony hand reached out into the air, his fingers clawing weakly toward me. Tears streamed down his hollow cheeks, pooling into the plastic rim of his oxygen mask.
"Maisie..." Grandpa rasped, his voice sounding like dry leaves rustling in the wind. "Please... forgive... me..."
"Why did you do it?" Cole demanded, stepping past the doctor, his towering frame looming over the hospital bed, his voice tight with an agonizing mixture of fury and despair. "She explicitly left her to me! Hannah signed a legal document, Benjamin! You didn't just lie to me—you committed a crime! You kidnapped my daughter!"
"Mr. Reynolds, step back or I will have security remove you!" the doctor barked, adjusting the IV drip lines.
"Let him speak!" I screamed at the doctor, my voice tearing through the chaos. "Let him tell the truth before he dies!"
The doctor hesitated, seeing the sheer intensity in my eyes, combined with the erratic, failing numbers flashing on the cardiac monitor. Grandpa was slipping away, his heart failing under the weight of his exposed sins.
Grandpa pulled off his own oxygen mask with a sudden, desperate surge of strength, gasping heavily for air. "I... I had to..." Grandpa sobbed, his chest heaving violently. "Cole... you... you didn't know..."
"Didn't know what?" Cole yelled, leaning down close to the old man's face. "What didn't I know?"
"Hannah... she was sick..." Grandpa wept, his eyes wide with an ancient, haunting terror. "Before she died... she didn't die of childbirth complications, Cole... She had... a genetic heart condition. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The same thing... that's killing me right now..."
The entire room seemed to go dead silent, the medical alarms blurring into background noise. Cole froze. I felt the air completely leave my lungs.
"What?" I whispered, my voice trembling violently.
"It's hereditary..." Grandpa rasped, clutching his weak chest as fresh tears spilled down his sunken face. "Hannah found out when she was six months pregnant. The doctors told her... carrying the baby to term would destroy her heart. They told her to terminate the pregnancy... to save her own life."
Cole’s breath hitched in his throat. He shook his head slowly, in absolute denial. "No... no, she never told me that... She said she was fine..."
"She didn't tell you because she knew you'd force her to stop!" Grandpa cried out, a ragged, guttural sound of pure agony. "She wanted that baby more than she wanted her own life! She hid her diagnosis from you! She refused the heart medication because she was afraid it would hurt the baby! She sacrificed herself, Cole! She died so Maisie could live!"
Cole fell back against the wall, his hands flying to his mouth, his eyes wide with a horrifying, crushing realization. The woman he had loved, the woman he thought had been torn away from him by a bitter father, had chosen to lay down her life in secret to give birth to our child.
"And when she died..." Grandpa continued, his breath coming in shallow, terrifying gasps, "...I lost my mind. I looked at you, Cole... a twenty-one-year-old kid with no money, no home... and I looked at this tiny, newborn baby who carried the same deadly genetic trait. I couldn't lose her too. I thought... if I gave her to you, you wouldn't know how to monitor her... you wouldn't have the money for her heart scans... you wouldn't protect her!"
"So you lied to me?" Cole choked out, tears finally breaking through his hard exterior, running down his face. "You made me think my baby was dead?"
"I wanted to save her!" Grandpa wept, his body trembling violently. "I took her... I forged the death record... I spent every single penny I had on her doctors, her heart tests, her therapy... I worked myself to death so she would survive! I was wrong... God forgive me, I was so wrong to steal your years with her... but I loved her! I loved her so much!"
The heart monitor let out a long, continuous, terrifying tone: BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.
"Flatline! He's in ventricular fibrillation!" the doctor screamed, shoving Cole and me backward. "Get the crash cart! Charge to 200!"
"Grandpa!" I shrieked, reaching out through the sea of nurses and medical equipment.
"Clear!" the doctor shouted, placing the defibrillator paddles against Grandpa's frail, bare chest. His body jolted violently off the bed with a sickening thud.
BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.
"Still no pulse! Charge to 300! Clear!"
THUD.
"Maisie..." Cole whispered behind me, placing his large, trembling hands over my shoulders, pulling me back from the horrific scene unfolding before us.
I turned around in my chair, wrapping my arms around Cole's waist, burying my face into his leather vest as violent, uncontrollable sobs wracked my body. My father wrapped his arms around me, holding me tight, his own tears dripping onto my hair as the doctors frantically fought to bring back the man who had stolen us from each other, yet destroyed himself to keep me alive.

"Come on, Benjamin..." Cole muttered into the chaos, his voice raw with a profound, heartbreaking forgiveness. "Don't die now, you old bastard... Fight... Fight for her..."
The room echoed with the screeching alarm of the monitor, the frantic orders of the trauma team, and the deafening weight of a truth that had taken twenty years, two ruined lives, and a dying man's final breath to finally come to light.
