Chapter 5 - The Living Dead

The word hung in the damp air of the living room, heavy and utterly unbelievable.
"What did you just say?" I breathed. My brain refused to compute the syllables. "My mother died three months ago. I was at the funeral. I touched her hands in the casket. We buried her next to my father!"
"You buried a body, Kathryn. But it wasn't your mother," Sarah said calmly. She set the leather briefcase down on the dining table and unbuckled the brass latches. "Mark kept this from you because your mother begged him to. She was in witness protection, hiding from Julian and the men he owes millions of dollars to."
I felt the room tilt. My knees felt weak, and the flashlight slipped from my fingers, hitting the rug with a muffled thud. "That... that's impossible. I saw her..."
"You saw a high-grade prosthetic mold over a unclaimed body from the county morgue, arranged by federal marshals," Sarah asserted, opening the briefcase. Inside were stacks of legal documents, medical files, and fresh photographs. "Your mother was a senior accountant for Julian’s shell companies. Fifteen years ago, when Julian faked his death in the river, he didn't just run—he stole forty million dollars from a cartel operating out of Miami. He used your mother’s signatures to frame your family."
"No... no, no..." I shook my head, tears blurring my vision. "Mark told me today you were an investigator! He said Julian was his twin brother!"
"I am an investigator, Kathryn. Federal Asset Recovery," Sarah said, flipping open a badge inside a dark leather wallet. "And Mark is his twin brother. But Mark wasn't the good twin who stayed clean. Mark and Julian were partners."
I gasped, looking back at Mark, who stirred slightly on the floor, a low groan escaping his lips.
"Wait," I stammered, my head spinning from the whiplash of lies. "You just said my mother was alive! You just said Mark was protecting her!"
"Mark was protecting her until three weeks ago," Sarah said, her voice turning razor-sharp. "Until he realized Julian had tracked her down to the safe house in Vermont. Mark traded your mother's real location to Julian in exchange for his share of the forty million dollars."
The horror mounted with every word. Every foundation of my existence was crumbling. My marriage was a lie. My mother's death was a lie. The grief I had suffered for three months was a carefully constructed play designed to keep me docile while they moved money through my name.
Suddenly, a weak voice spoke from the floor.
"She's... lying... Ket..."
Mark was pushing himself up, leaning against the coffee table. Blood covered the left side of his face, but his eyes were sharp, filled with a frantic, desperate energy.
"Ket... don't listen to her," Mark panted, struggling to his feet. "Sarah isn't federal. She's Julian's lover! She’s the one who’s been moving the silver paint—it’s industrial chemical markers used to trace illegal bearer bonds!"
"Mark, shut up!" Sarah snapped, pulling a small silver revolver from her jacket.
"See?!" Mark yelled, stepping in front of me, shielding my body with his own. "If she were federal, she wouldn't be pulling an unregistered snub-nose .38 on us! She came here to clean up the mess because Julian failed to get the tape back!"
Before anyone could react, the lights in the entire house slammed off.
The storm outside raged violently, throwing the house into pitch-black darkness, punctuated only by flashes of white lightning through the windows.
A loud smash of breaking glass echoed from the kitchen.

"He's inside," Sarah whispered into the dark.
From the top of the stairs, Leo’s terrified scream pierced the air: "MOMMY! SOMEONE IS IN MY ROOM!"
