Chapter 15 - The Father I Buried

Z
The call came from a burner phone ten minutes later.
I answered before anyone could stop me.
“Dad?”
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a familiar voice spoke.
“Hello, Emma.”
I had imagined hearing that voice again a thousand times after his death. In dreams. In memories. In moments when I saw fathers holding their daughters’ hands at school events.
But I had never imagined hearing it like this.
Cold.
Distant.
Alive.
“Where is Chloe?” I asked.
“She’s safe.”
“Put her on the phone.”
“You don’t get to make demands.”
“She’s ten years old.”
“And she is alive because I have allowed her to be.”
My entire body shook.
“You’re my father.”
“I was your father.”
The words cut deeper than anything Marcus had ever said.
He told me he had survived the boating accident by design. The accident had been staged after investigators began looking into financial irregularities connected to his business. He had taken money, changed identities, and disappeared before the network grew into what Marcus later controlled.
“Marcus was useful,” he said. “But he was reckless. Emotional. He liked fear too much.”
“And you don’t?”
“I like order.”
“You kidnapped your granddaughter.”
“I created leverage.”
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I forced myself to breathe.
“What do you want?”
“Mara Pierce.”
“She has nothing to do with this.”
“She has everything to do with it. Her investigation damaged Marcus’s network. Then it led back to me.”
“You want revenge.”
“No. I want immunity.”
I laughed through tears. “You think you can negotiate immunity after kidnapping a child?”
“I think people negotiate when they have something to lose.”
The line went dead.
Mara had heard everything.
For a long moment, she stood completely still.
Then she said, “We do not give him what he wants.”
“My daughter is with him.”
“And if you go alone, he takes you too.”
Daniel stepped forward. “We can track the call.”
“Not long enough,” an agent replied. “He used a mobile relay.”
My mother’s phone was also gone.
That detail frightened me more than anything. My mother had known my father was alive. Maybe she had been forced to help him. Maybe she had chosen to.
Either way, she was with Chloe now.
And I had no idea whether she was protecting my daughter or betraying her.
Mara made a plan.
We would appear to accept the exchange. She would travel to the location alone, while agents monitored every possible route. I would record a video message for my father, telling him Mara was coming.
But I could not sit in a command center while Chloe was trapped with him.
So I made my own plan.
I remembered something from the house outside Annapolis.
A stack of old papers near the computer.
One was a marina receipt from North Carolina. The same coastal town where my father’s “accident” happened.
I searched the name.
A small private dock.
A warehouse.
A boat registered under another shell company.
At sunset, Daniel and I drove there.
We did not tell Mara.
We did not tell Harris.
We told one agent we trusted and sent him the location only after we arrived.
The warehouse was nearly empty. The smell of saltwater and oil filled the air. Through a crack in the side door, I saw a light.
Then I heard Chloe crying.
“Mom?”
My heart shattered.
I pushed inside.
My father stood near a folding chair with Chloe beside him. Her hands were tied loosely in front of her, but she was unharmed. My mother sat against the wall, crying silently.
Daniel stepped in front of me.
My father smiled.
“You always were stubborn.”
“Let her go,” I said.
“You came without Mara.”
“I came for my daughter.”
“That was your first mistake.”
He lifted a gun.
Then my mother stood.
“No,” she said.
Everyone froze.
My father turned toward her.
“What did you say?”
“I said no.”
Her voice shook, but she kept going.
“I helped you once because I was afraid. I told Emma you were dead because you told me it would keep her safe. But it never kept anyone safe.”
He grabbed her arm.
“You don’t get to become brave now.”
“Yes,” she whispered. “I do.”
She drove her shoulder into him.
The gun fell.
Daniel lunged forward.
Chloe screamed.
I ran to her as gunfire exploded outside the warehouse.
Federal agents had arrived.
My father tried to run toward the dock, but he slipped on the wet concrete. Agents surrounded him before he reached the water.
For the second time in my life, I watched my father disappear.
But this time, he did not vanish into the ocean.
He was placed in handcuffs.
And Chloe was in my arms.
Alive.
Shaking.
May you like
Safe.
For now.
