Chapter 2

Another parent joined him.
BANG!
The lock finally snapped.
The door burst open.
And the hallway erupted into chaos.
Five terrified children sat huddled together inside the dark classroom.
Lily Parker clung to two younger toddlers while crying silently.
The room was freezing cold.
The lights were off.
And stacked against the inside of the door—
were heavy classroom shelves.
As if someone had tried to keep the children trapped there.
Emma ran straight toward Lily and pulled her into her arms.
“Oh my God…”
Parents immediately rushed toward the other crying children.
One little girl whispered through tears:
“Teacher said we had to stay quiet…”
A father turned furiously toward Ms. Harper.
“What the hell is wrong with you?”
But Ms. Harper herself looked terrified now.
Because suddenly—
another teacher stepped into the hallway.
And froze.
Her face turned completely white when she saw the open classroom.
“No…”
Behind her stood the daycare director.
And unlike Ms. Harper—
he didn’t look shocked.
He looked angry.
Very angry.
“Who opened that door?” he demanded.
Parents stared at him in disbelief.
Emma slowly stood while holding Lily tightly.
“My daughter was locked in there.”
The director immediately forced a calm expression.
“There must be some misunderstanding—”
“No misunderstanding,” Noah cried loudly. “I saw them push the shelves!”
More parents started yelling.
Phones came out instantly.
Someone shouted:
“Call the police!”
That was when Ms. Harper suddenly burst into tears.
“I didn’t want to do it!”
The hallway fell silent again.
The director’s face darkened instantly.
“Linda.”
But she stepped away from him, shaking violently.
“He told us to hide them until inspection was over!”
Gasps exploded through the hallway.
One parent whispered:
“What inspection?”
Ms. Harper cried harder.
“The daycare was over capacity. We weren’t licensed for that many children. He said if inspectors saw the extra kids, the center would shut down.”
Emma looked horrified.
“You locked children in a dark room?”
The teacher nodded through tears.
“They said it would only be for twenty minutes…”
Lily buried her face against her mother’s shoulder.
“It was dark, Mommy…”
Sirens suddenly echoed outside the daycare building.
The director tried to quietly step backward toward the exit—
until several furious fathers blocked the hallway.
“You’re not going anywhere.”
By the time police entered the building, terrified children were still crying in their parents’ arms.
And standing in the middle of the hallway—
still clutching his sister’s pink ribbon—
little Noah Parker became the tiny hero who saved every child trapped behind that locked classroom door.
