Chapter 12 - The Traitor’s Mask

By six the following morning, the private subterranean war room beneath Crosswell Tower was locked down under Level Red protocol. Sarah Lin’s eyes were bloodshot as her fingers flew across her encrypted laptop, while Jonah stood behind two armed intelligence contractors monitoring the real-time movement of every senior executive in the tri-state area.

"The digital signature is an exact cryptographic match," Sarah reported, projecting the decrypted packet data onto the central wall display. "The internal token used to bypass our Frankfurt firewall was generated by the physical hardware key issued to Arthur Vance in 2014. It has been dormant for seven years, waiting for Grant and Celeste to fail."

I leaned over the glass table, feeling a cold, calculating clarity replace the initial shock. "Arthur didn't just wait for them to fail; he orchestrated their downfall. When Jonah gave me that dashcam video in the hospital, Arthur was the one who quietly advised Grant to push for the emergency vote. He wanted Grant to make mistakes. He wanted Celeste to panic and attempt to poison me. He used me as the scalpel to surgically remove the clumsy thieves so he could step in and claim the entire anatomical beast."

"Look at this," Jonah said, zooming in on satellite surveillance footage of a private hangar at Westchester County Airport.

A Gulfstream G650 with unlisted tail numbers was currently refueling on the tarmac. A black luxury sedan pulled up to the mobile stairs. The passenger door opened, and Arthur Vance stepped out, wearing his signature camel-hair coat, carrying a reinforced aluminum briefcase handcuffed to his left wrist.

"He’s liquidating," Sarah said, pointing to a cascading list of offshore sell-orders flooding the Hong Kong stock exchange. "He’s dumping his founder's shares at a forty percent discount to artificially crash Crosswell’s valuation before the opening bell on the New York Stock Exchange. The moment the stock tanks, Vanguard Nexus will trigger an automated short-squeeze, buying up fifty-one percent of the remaining float through European nominee accounts. By nine-thirty a.m., he won't need your voting shares, Evelyn. He will own the debt that controls the patent deeds."

"How long until that Gulfstream receives air traffic clearance?" I demanded.

"Twenty-two minutes," Jonah answered, checking his tactical watch. "He filed a flight plan for Zurich with a refueling stop in Reykjavik. Once that jet enters international airspace, our civil subpoenas and SEC injunctions are completely useless."

"Then we don't use subpoenas," I replied, standing up and grabbing my overcoat. "Jonah, ready the chopper. Sarah, I want you to initiate the Lazarus Protocol on the master patent registry."

Sarah’s eyes widened behind her glasses. "Evelyn... the Lazarus Protocol was designed by your father as a scorched-earth mechanism. If you trigger it, all proprietary modular clinic blueprints will be published onto an open-source public domain server. Crosswell’s intellectual property valuation will drop to zero dollars within seconds."

"A zero-dollar company is worthless to a predatory private equity firm," I said, my voice hardening into pure steel. "Arthur wants to steal my father's life work to sell it to foreign oligarchs for billions. Let’s see how much Vanguard Nexus is willing to pay when the cure for rural healthcare is free to every human being on planet Earth."

"And what happens to Crosswell?" Jonah asked, his gaze locking with mine.

"We rebuild it again," I said without hesitation. "Because I am the one who designs the machines. Arthur Vance only knows how to count the blood money."

Fifteen minutes later, our twin-engine corporate helicopter lifted off from the rooftop helipad, cutting through the dense morning fog, racing toward Westchester.
