Chapter 15 - The Last Deal

Richard Vale had been missing for forty-eight hours when Emily received a message from him.
It arrived at 3:12 a.m.
No number.
No email address.
Just a notification on her laptop screen.
COME TO THE MILL ALONE.
BRING THE ORIGINAL NOTEBOOK.
OR MICHAEL DIES.
Emily stared at the words.
Her face went completely still.
Then her phone rang.
Michael.
She answered immediately.
No one spoke.
Then a recording played.
Michael’s voice.
“Emily, don’t do what he says.”
A loud sound followed.
A struggle.
Then Richard’s voice.
“Bring the notebook.”
The call ended.
I felt cold from the inside out.
“Call Marcus,” I said.
Emily already had.
Within minutes, Marcus, Angela, and Agent Howard were at the house.
The federal agents traced the signal to the abandoned mill near the river property.
The same place where the evidence had been hidden.
Richard had chosen it for a reason.
It was isolated.
Dangerous.
And full of memories.
“He wants the notebook because it links Whitmore to the dumping operation,” Angela said. “Without it, he thinks he can weaken the case.”
“He kidnapped Michael,” Emily whispered.
Agent Howard looked directly at her.
“We will get him back.”
Richard had demanded Emily come alone.
But no one trusted him enough to honor that demand.
The plan was risky.
Emily would carry a fake notebook containing copied pages.
She would wear a hidden microphone.
Federal agents would enter the mill from separate points.
Marcus would remain close enough to respond if anything went wrong.
I hated every part of it.
But Emily took my hands.
“Mom, this ends tonight.”
“What if it doesn’t?”
She looked at me.
“Then I’ll still know I didn’t let him control me.”
The mill was darker than ever.
Rain had begun falling again, turning the river into a black moving shadow outside the broken walls.
Emily walked inside alone.
I watched through the surveillance feed from the command vehicle.
Richard stood on the second floor walkway.
Michael was tied to a metal chair near the edge of the old loading platform.
His face was bruised, but he was awake.
“Emily!” he shouted.
Richard raised a gun.
“Quiet.”
Emily stopped.
“I brought the notebook,” she said.
Richard smiled.
“Good girl.”
His words made my stomach turn.
Emily held the fake notebook tightly.
“Let him go first.”
Richard laughed.
“You really think you get to negotiate?”
“I think you’re out of options.”
His face hardened.
“You have no idea how many people will fall if those records are released.”
“You mean how many criminals.”
“You think Whitmore was the only one? You think taking down one Senator changes anything?”
“No,” Emily said. “But it starts something.”
Richard stepped closer to Michael.
“I should have taken care of your father when I had the chance.”
The command vehicle went silent.
Emily’s breathing changed.
“What did you say?”
Richard looked down at her.
“Thomas was stubborn. He wanted to go public. He thought he could protect you with paperwork.”
My hands gripped the edge of the table.
Agent Howard whispered, “Keep him talking.”
Emily did.
“You killed my father?”
Richard smiled without warmth.
“Your father had a weak heart. I simply gave him a reason to use it.”
Emily’s face broke for one second.
Then she looked toward Michael.
And something in her changed.
Not rage.
Not panic.
Clarity.
“You didn’t win,” she said.
Richard’s smile faded.
“You destroyed families. You made people disappear. You used fear to get what you wanted. But you didn’t win.”
“I’m standing right here.”
“And everyone knows who you are now.”
Richard raised the gun.
At that moment, Michael threw his body sideways.
The chair crashed into Richard’s legs.
The gun fired.
The shot echoed through the mill.
Emily dropped to the floor.
Federal agents rushed in.
Richard ran toward the back staircase, firing wildly.
Marcus moved from behind a broken wall and tackled him before he could reach the exit.
They hit the ground hard.
Richard fought like a man drowning.
But he was no longer fighting people he could intimidate.
He was fighting the truth.
He was arrested within minutes.
Michael was taken to the hospital with injuries, but he survived.
The bullet had missed him.
When Emily reached him in the ambulance bay, he looked at her through tears.
“I’m sorry,” he said again.
Emily held his hand.
“I know.”
The next day, the police found evidence in Richard’s car connecting him to Thomas’s death.
Old messages.
Payments.
A private investigator’s records.
And a handwritten note from Richard himself.
Thomas knows too much.
Make it look natural.
The case against him changed overnight.
It was no longer just fraud.
It was murder.

And as Richard sat alone in a holding cell, the empire he had built on lies finally began to collapse.
