Chapter 3 - The Viper's WebZ

The rain beat violently against the windshield of my SUV as I parked across the street from Cole Enterprises, a looming glass skyscraper in the heart of downtown. The confrontation was coming; I could feel it in my bones. If Richard Cole and his high-priced lawyers thought they could twist the narrative to pull Daniel out of prison and protect their dirty dynasty, they were gravely mistaken.
I checked my purse, ensuring my small digital recorder was tucked safely inside the inner lining, and stepped out into the pouring rain.
The lobby of Cole Enterprises was a shrine to excessive wealth—polished white marble, towering abstract bronze sculptures, and security guards stationed every ten feet. I walked straight up to the receptionist desk.
"I’m here to see Richard Cole," I said calmly.
The receptionist gave me an amused, condescending smile. "Do you have an appointment, ma'am?"
"Tell him Emily Carter is downstairs," I replied, leaning over the counter. "Tell him I have the unredacted inventory logs from St. Matthew’s hospital pharmacy. He has two minutes before I take them directly to the federal prosecutor."
The receptionist’s smile vanished. She picked up the desk phone, whispered a few rushed words, and then looked back at me with wide eyes. "Top floor. Executive elevator on the left."
The elevator ride was silent and suffocatingly fast. When the doors opened on the penthouse floor, I was met not by a security team, but by Vanessa Cole herself.
She looked vastly different from the polished, arrogant assistant I remembered from Daniel’s office. She was noticeably thinner, her skin pale, with dark circles under her eyes. But her defiance remained intact.
"You shouldn't have come here, Emily," Vanessa said, blocking my path down the carpeted hallway.
"Out of my way, Vanessa," I said coldly. "I’m here to talk to the man who bought my daughter's life."
"You don't understand anything!" Vanessa snapped, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and anger. "Daniel told me those medications were extra! He told me Lily was fine! My father was dying, Emily! He needed those drugs to survive!"
"And my daughter was dying!" I shouted back, stepping directly into her personal space. "She was an eight-year-old child! Your father is a grown man who used his wealth to buy stolen drugs at the expense of a little girl! Do you think your father’s life is worth more than Lily’s?"
Vanessa winced, stepping back as if I had slapped her. "Daniel promised..."
"Daniel lied to both of us!" I yelled. "Or are you still stupid enough to think he loved you? You were a golden ticket, Vanessa! You were his ticket into your father's billionaire inner circle!"
"That's enough, Vanessa. Let her in."
A deep, raspy voice echoed from the double doors at the end of the hall. Richard Cole stood in the doorway, hooked up to a portable IV drip, leaning heavily on a cane. Despite his physical frailty, his eyes held the predatory sharpness of a man used to getting whatever he wanted.
I brushed past Vanessa and walked into his sprawling office, which overlooked the storm-drenched city skyline.
"Mrs. Carter," Richard said, shuffling over to his mahogany desk and taking a seat. "I admire your tenacity. A mother’s fury is a formidable force. But you are playing a game far above your financial weight class."
"This isn't a game, Mr. Cole," I said, staying on my feet. "I know about the shell company. I know about the wire transfers to Daniel’s offshore account. You bought the stolen medication that nearly killed my daughter."
Richard chuckled dryly, a chilling sound. "I am a dying man, Emily. When you are faced with your own mortality, legal technicalities become utterly meaningless. I paid a brilliant pharmacist for a life-saving drug. How he acquired that drug was his business, not mine."
"It became your business when he took it out of my child's veins!" I slammed my hands down on his desk. "Your legal team is filing a motion to overturn Daniel’s conviction and suppress the pharmacy records. You are trying to cover up his crimes so he doesn't talk to the feds about you."
Richard leaned back, resting his hands on his cane. "Daniel Carter is a greedy, weak-willed idiot. But he is my idiot right now. If he goes down for federal racketeering, he will drag my company down with him. I cannot allow that to happen. My daughter’s future depend on Cole Enterprises remaining untainted."
"And what about my daughter’s future?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet.
"I am prepared to offer you a settlement," Richard said smoothly, reaching into his desk drawer and pulling out a checkbook. "Ten million dollars. Cash. Placed into a irrevocable trust for Lily. She will have the best medical care in the world for the rest of her life. In exchange, you will sign an affidavit stating that Daniel was under extreme emotional distress, that you misheard his phone confession, and that you believe the missing medication was simply a procedural mistake by the hospital."
I stared at the checkbook, feeling a sickening rush of disgust. Ten million dollars. It was more money than I could earn in three lifetimes. It could secure Lily’s future forever.
They think everyone has a price, I thought. They think money can wash away blood.
"You really don't get it, do you?" I whispered, pulling my phone out of my purse and pressing stop on the recording app. "You can't buy me, Mr. Cole."
Richard’s eyes narrowed instantly. "Was that recording?"
"Every single word," I smiled bitterly. "Your confession that you knowingly paid Daniel for stolen drugs. Your bribe offer. All of it."
Richard’s composure cracked for the first time. He slammed his cane against the floor. "You foolish, arrogant woman! You think you're a hero? If you leak that recording, my lawyers will tie you up in court for the next twenty years! I will sue you for illegal wiretapping! I will destroy your reputation, take away your house, and make sure you never work again!"
"Try it," I said, turning my back on him and walking toward the door. "Because while you're busy spending your millions trying to ruin me, I’m going to make sure the world knows that Richard Cole stole life-saving medicine from a dying eight-year-old girl."
I yanked open the door and stepped out, leaving Richard breathing heavily into his oxygen mask. But as I walked down the corridor past Vanessa, she reached out and grabbed my arm.
"Emily, wait!" she whispered frantically, looking over her shoulder toward her father's office. "You don't know what he's capable of! My father didn't just buy drugs from Daniel. Daniel gave him something else. Something about you."
I stopped dead in my tracks. "What are you talking about?"
Vanessa’s voice dropped to a terrified murmur. "Daniel didn't just meet my father by chance. Daniel was planning this for years. He took out a multi-million-dollar life insurance policy on Lily months before she got sick... and he put a double-indemnity clause in it."
The hallway seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

"What... did you just say?" I gasped.
"Daniel didn't just want to save my father or give me the drug," Vanessa whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "He was waiting for Lily to die, Emily. He was going to collect the insurance payout, frame the hospital for negligence, and split the money with my father's corporate shell company. You need to get your daughter out of the state. Right now."
