Chapter 8 - Twisted Confessions

Z
For three grueling days, I sat on the witness stand inside Courtroom 4B, answering hundreds of rapid-fire questions from Prosecutor David Vance and enduring a brutal, eight-hour cross-examination from defense counsel Thomas Hayes.
They tried everything to break me. Hayes dragged out my medical records, questioning my psychological state after my miscarriages years prior. He brought up my modest upbringing, trying to paint me as an ambitious, gold-digging outsider who had infiltrated the Vance family with the sole intent of stealing their wealth through a public whistleblower lawsuit.
He failed spectacularly.
For every aggressive question Hayes hurled at me, I produced a specific date, a precise transaction number, or an encrypted folder code that directly refuted his claims. When he suggested I had fabricated the digital ledgers, I calmly produced the original metadata logs showing that the files had been modified personally by Arthur Vance using his private, biometric-locked laptop inside his executive office.
By the morning of the fourth day, the defense team was visibly crumbling. The jurors were glaring openly at Arthur and Julian, disgusted by the overwhelming mountain of objective proof backing my testimony.
“The prosecution calls Miss Chloe Sterling,” David Vance announced to the courtroom.
Julian’s head snapped up in absolute horror. Beside him, Arthur let out a low, furious curse under his breath.
Chloe Sterling entered the courtroom escorted by two federal marshals. She looked nothing like the glamorously styled twenty-two-year-old mistress who had giggled at my suffering four months ago. She was dressed in a plain black dress, her face devoid of makeup, her posture slumped with shame. In exchange for a complete immunity agreement regarding her secondary wire fraud charges, she had agreed to turn state’s evidence against Julian and Arthur Vance.
She took the stand, refusing to look at Julian, who was staring at her with eyes filled with pure betrayal.
“Miss Sterling,” Prosecutor David Vance said, stepping toward the center of the floor. “Please state your relationship with defendant Julian Vance for the record.”
“I… I was his mistress for fourteen months,” Chloe whispered, her voice barely audible over the courtroom microphones. “Speak up, please,” Judge Carter instructed gently.
“I was his mistress,” Chloe repeated, her voice cracking slightly. “He… he told me he was going to leave his wife. He told me Clara was unstable, barren, and that his father wanted her out of the family business.”
“Did there come a time when you discussed financial transactions with Julian Vance?” Vance asked.
“Yes,” Chloe said, pulling a tissue from her pocket. “Two weeks before the baby shower, Julian set up a secondary offshore account in my name in Switzerland. He transferred twelve million dollars into it. He told me it was ‘insurance money’ in case the federal government ever started looking into his father’s main logistics company.”
Murmurs surged through the gallery. That single statement crushed the defense’s entire line of argument that Julian had no knowledge of his father’s money laundering activities.
“And regarding the events of October 14th—the day of the baby shower,” David Vance pressed on, his voice low and deliberate. “Did Julian Vance discuss his plans for Clara prior to arriving at the mansion?”
Chloe began to cry openly, wiping tears from her cheeks. “Yes. On the drive over, Julian told me… he told me his mother had arranged for Clara to be publicly humiliated so she would break down and run out of the house. He said his father had already drafted divorce papers alleging mental cruelty and unfaithfulness, and that if she refused to sign them, they would make sure she lost custody of her baby the moment it was born.”
The courtroom gasped. Two female jurors placed their hands over their mouths in visible horror.
“And what happened inside the ballroom, Miss Sterling?” David Vance asked, pushing the dagger in deeper.
“Clara yelled at him for bringing me into her home,” Chloe sobbed. “And Julian got angry. He said she was embarrassing him in front of his father’s business partners. He… he grabbed her arm, pulled her close, and whispered in her ear that she was nothing but an incubator for an heir he didn't even want. Then… then he shoved her as hard as he could.”
“Objection! Hearsay and opinion!” Hayes shouted from the defense table, his face pale with panic.
“Overruled!” Judge Carter snapped instantly. “The witness is testifying to direct observation of the assault.”
David Vance turned to face Julian, who was shaking his head wildly, tears streaming down his face.
“Did Julian show any remorse or concern after pushing his eight-month-pregnant wife to the floor?” David Vance asked softly.
Chloe looked directly at Julian for the first time, her eyes filled with deep, sickening realization. “No. He stepped over her, looked down at her bleeding on the rug, and told his mother to order the staff to clean up the mess before the caterers arrived.”
A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon Courtroom 4B.
Julian suddenly stood up from his chair, knocking his heavy wooden seat backward into the partition wall. “You lying bitch!” he screamed at Chloe, his face contorted with insane, unbridled rage. “You promised me you would stay quiet! I gave you everything! I bought you that apartment! I bought you those diamonds!”
“Defendant Julian Vance, sit down immediately!” Judge Carter ordered, slamming her gavel violently.
“She’s lying! They’re all lying!” Julian lost all control, turning his fury toward the prosecution table and pointing a shaking finger at me. “She planned this! Clara set me up! She orchestrated the whole thing to take my family’s money! She’s the monster! SHE IS THE MONSTER!”
Four federal marshals swarmed Julian, tackling him over the defense table, sweeping his legs out from under him, and forcing him face-down onto the hard floor. Steel handcuffs clicked loudly over his wrists as he kicked and screamed frantically like a spoiled, psychopathic child being dragged into the dark.

“Remove him from my courtroom!” Judge Carter roared, her gavel striking the wooden block repeatedly. “The defendant will remain in the holding cell for the duration of this trial! Proceedings are suspended until tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM!”
As the marshals dragged Julian out through the side doors, his screams echoing down the marble hallway, I sat quietly beside Agent Thorne, gently stroking my sleeping son’s head. The mask had completely fallen off. The world had finally seen the Vance family for exactly what they were.
