Chapter 9 - Fire on the Ridge

The cold wind howled across the driveway, whipping the hem of the stranger’s wool overcoat. His grey eyes remained fixed on me, unblinking, filled with the patient confidence of a professional who had done this a hundred times in a dozen different countries.

“You have five seconds to make a decision, Mr. Hale,” the scarred man said, his voice dropping into a flat, mechanical tone. “My team is already positioned in the tree line surrounding your property. We don't need you alive to take the key. We only need the cylinder.”

I didn't flinch. I let out a short, quiet laugh that made his brow furrow slightly.

“You brought a team to my home?” I asked, taking one slow step down the wooden porch stairs. “That was your first mistake.”

Before he could react, I hit the manual trigger button concealed inside my pocket.

The two hidden acoustic dampening arrays mounted inside the birdhouses along the tree line activated instantly, releasing a focused, high-frequency directional pulse of 130-decibel sound waves directly toward the woods.

From the trees, sharp cries of pain erupted as three hidden mercenaries dropped their weapons, clutching their bleeding ears in agony, completely disoriented by the sonic wave.

The scarred man’s eyes widened in shock. He reached inside his overcoat for a suppressed firearm.

I raised my sidearm and fired two rapid shots directly into the engine block of his black sedan. BANG! BANG! The high-grade armor-piercing rounds shattered the alternator and engine control unit, sending steam and sparks bursting through the hood.

“Your extraction vehicle is dead!” I shouted over the high-pitched whine of the acoustic array. “And state police units were dispatched to this grid section three minutes ago when your vehicle crossed my outer boundary line!”

The man snarled, pulling a tactical smoke canister from his belt and slamming it onto the gravel floor. A dense wall of thick grey smoke instantly erupted, obscuring the driveway.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Suppressed gunshots tore through the wooden railing of my porch as the remaining mercenaries fired blindly into the smoke to cover their retreat.

“Pop! Get inside!” Emily shouted from the open doorway, holding a heavy tactical shotgun she had retrieved from the house armory, aiming it steadily into the fog.

I racked back onto the porch, ducking beneath the window frame as bullets splintered the cedar wall above us. I grabbed Emily’s jacket, pulling her back into the reinforced hallway as the heavy steel security shutters slammed down over the windows with a loud mechanical thud, sealing the house completely.

“Are you hurt?!” Emily yelled over the thumping of her own heart.

“I’m fine,” I gasped, checking the monitoring console mounted on the hallway wall. The thermal cameras showed four heat signatures rapidly retreating into the woods toward an off-road utility vehicle hidden half a mile away. “They’re pulling back. They realized they lost the element of surprise.”

“They threatened my life, Pop,” Emily said, her hands trembling slightly on the shotgun grip, but her eyes burning with fury. “They came to our home.”

“They came for the key,” I corrected, looking down at the silver cylinder around my neck. “Sterling isn't trying to buy his freedom anymore. He’s trying to wipe out everyone who knows the master access codes. He’s terrified that the federal grand jury will unseal the offshore ledger.”

The wall communicator chimed. It was Agent Vance from the FBI field office.

“Hale!” Vance’s voice came through crisp and urgent over the speaker. “We just picked up an emergency transmission from your estate perimeter alarm! Are you and Emily secure?”

“We’re locked inside the safe room,” I reported, watching the thermal feeds as the four mercenaries cleared the property line. “Sterling hired an international recovery team. Four operators, professional equipment, heavy weapons. They tried to execute a snatch-and-grab for the master key.”

Vance cursed loudly over the line. “We just executed a raid on Sterling’s legal team’s office in downtown Chicago twenty minutes ago. We found transfer wire receipts sending four million dollars to a mercenary shell company in Zurich. He’s liquidating everything from inside his cell.”

“You need to move Sterling to a maximum-security federal facility immediately, Vance,” I said sternly. “He’s still running operations through his legal defense team.”

“We’re transferring him to ADX Florence by military transport at dawn,” Vance assured me. “But Hale... as long as you have that physical key in your possession, you’re a target for every paid gun in Europe.”

May you like

I looked at Emily, then down at the blue glowing cylinder in my hand.

“Then it’s time to stop holding onto the key,” I said calmly. “I’m bringing it to the federal courthouse in Chicago tonight. We unseal the ledger on national television.”
