Chapter 7 - The Burning Bridge

I dialed Marissa’s number with trembling hands while sitting in the cab of the tow truck as it hauled my car toward the nearest service station in Olympia.

"Marissa! What happened? Is Lily okay?" I panicked into the phone.

"Lily is fine, she's with me in my car," Marissa’s voice was breathy and panicked, accompanied by the distant sound of blaring sirens. "Evelyn, two women from Child Protective Services showed up at your house ten minutes ago with two police officers."

My heart stopped. "What? Why? Sterling issued a stay!"

"They had an Emergency Removal Warrant signed by a State Circuit Judge," Marissa explained, her voice cracking. "Not Sterling—a judge named Harold Montgomery. Someone filed an anonymous report three hours ago claiming that you had abandoned Lily alone in the house to flee state lines because of an impending criminal arrest in Seattle!"

"They set me up!" I cried out, slamming my hand against the tow truck dashboard. "Arthur stopped me on the highway to delay me so the CPS call would look real! Where is Lily now?"

"The security guards Danielle hired refused to let them enter without verifying the warrant," Marissa said. "It bought me enough time to bundle Lily out the back door and get her into my car. We’re currently driving toward my sister’s house in Vancouver. But Evelyn, the police are looking for my car now. They think I kidnapped her!"

"Do not go to your sister's house!" I shouted. "If they have a warrant, Montgomery’s officers will track your family first! Go straight to Danielle’s office downtown. Danielle will stand on the courthouse steps with the child if she has to!"

"Okay, okay, I'm heading downtown," Marissa gasped. "Evelyn, hurry!"

I hung up and immediately called Danielle.

"I know," Danielle said before I could even speak. "Marissa called me. Judge Montgomery was Richard’s law school roommate forty years ago. Richard pulled a favor to get an emergency signed warrant behind Sterling's back. It's a massive violation of judicial protocol."

"They're trying to arrest Marissa for kidnapping!" I yelled.

"They won't," Danielle snapped, her voice like cracking whip. "I am already at the courthouse filing an emergency motion to stay Montgomery's order based on judicial misconduct. But Evelyn, we need to end this today. We cannot keep playing defense while Richard uses every corrupt judge in the state."

"What do we do?"

"The recording you got from Arthur Pendelton," Danielle said, her voice dropping into a lethal, quiet tone. "Send it to me now. I am not just giving it to the judge. I am delivering it personally to the Chief Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Oregon. Extortion, subornation of perjury, and interstate conspiracy. Your father didn't just cross civil boundaries, Evelyn. He committed federal crimes."

An hour later, I was back on the road in a rental vehicle, driving like a madwoman toward Portland. The rain had cleared, leaving behind a cold, blinding sunlight that reflected off the wet asphalt.

By the time I pulled into the underground parking garage of the Multnomah County Courthouse at 1:30 PM, my adrenaline was the only thing keeping me conscious. I ran through the metal detectors, up the marble stairs, and burst into Department 402.

The scene inside was chaotic.

My mother and father were sitting at the petitioner's table, flanked by Anne Keller and two uniformed police officers. On the other side stood Danielle, looking completely composed, holding a thick black tablet plugged into the courtroom’s audio system. Marissa was sitting in the front row of the gallery, holding a terrified Lily, who was sobbing into her rabbit.

Judge Robert Sterling was sitting on the bench, his face bright red with unbridled fury.

"Mr. Vance!" Judge Sterling was roaring at my father as I walked in. "You went behind my back to Judge Montgomery to procure an ex-parte removal warrant while a stay issued by THIS COURT was actively in effect?!"

"Your Honor," Richard stood up, his voice remaining smooth, though I could see a bead of sweat glistening on his temple. "We received credible information that the respondent was fleeing the jurisdiction to escape felony charges in Seattle. We acted solely out of concern for our granddaughter's imminent safety."

"Credible information?" Danielle interjected loudly, stepping toward the center of the room. "Your Honor, the 'credible information' was a criminal conspiracy orchestrated by Mr. Vance himself."

Danielle hit a button on her tablet.

Arthur Pendelton's voice suddenly blasted through the courtroom's high-definition speakers, filling every corner of the vast room:

“I did what Richard asked me to do... As I have done for thirty years. Richard built my career... Turn the car around, Evelyn. Sign the voluntary guardianship papers today. If you do, the HR audit in Seattle magically disappears... By noon today, the King County Sheriff's Department will issue a warrant for your arrest... You will lose everything, Evelyn.”

The courtroom fell into an absolute, deathly silence.

Carolyn gasped, covering her mouth with her hands, looking at Richard in utter terror. Anne Keller slowly closed her briefcase, stepping three feet away from Richard as if trying to physically distance herself from a toxic radioactive disaster.

Richard Vance stood frozen at the table. For the first time in my life, I saw the mask slip. His eyes widened, his posture broke, and his face turned a ghostly, sickening white.

Judge Sterling stared down from the bench at my father, his eyes burning with a rage so profound the air in the room felt electric.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Sterling said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly whisper. "You have practiced law in this state for forty years. And today, you walked into my courtroom after attempting to subvert justice, blackmail an innocent mother, and manipulate a federal banking investigation."

"Your Honor—" Richard started, his voice finally cracking.

"Silence!" Sterling slammed his gavel so hard the wooden block splintered. "Bailiff! Take Mr. Richard Vance and Mrs. Carolyn Vance into custody immediately!"

Two armed court officers stepped forward, pulling my parents' hands behind their backs and snapping heavy silver handcuffs around their wrists.

"You are being held in contempt of court without bail pending formal criminal referral to the State Bar and the Federal Bureau of Investigation," Sterling declared coldly. "This court hereby vacates all petitions filed by the petitioners. Full, unencumbered legal and physical custody of Lily Vance remains entirely with her mother, Evelyn Vance. Court is permanently adjourned."

As the officers hauled my screaming mother and silent, defeated father through the side door toward the holding cells, Lily broke away from Marissa and ran down the aisle, throwing her small arms around my waist.

I dropped to my knees on the hardwood floor, pulling her tight against my chest, burying my face in her shoulder as tears of overwhelming relief washed over me.

"It's over, baby," I sobbed, kissing her soft hair over and over. "It's over. Nobody is ever taking you away."
