Chapter 5 - Evelyn's Desperate Counterattack

The atmosphere inside the bail hearing room of the Saratoga County Courthouse was thick with tension. The gallery was packed with local news reporters, legal observers, and curious locals who had caught wind of the dramatic arrest at the Grand Union Hotel. The story of a hardworking Canadian transplant whose wife was starved while his mother and sister spent two hundred thousand dollars of his earnings had become an instant media sensation across upstate New York.

Andrew sat in the front row of the gallery alongside Sarah Vance. He wore a crisp dark suit, his broad shoulders squared, his gaze fixed coldly on the side door where the defendants were about to be brought out.

The side door clicked open, and two armed court officers led Margaret and Evelyn inside. Both women were wearing bright orange inmate jumpsuits, their hands cuffed at the waist and ankles shackled, making a heavy, metallic clinking sound with every step. Evelyn’s long hair was unwashed, hanging in limp strands around her face, while Margaret looked visibly aged, her posture slouched, her eyes darting nervously around the room until they landed on Andrew.

A flicker of desperate rage flashed across Margaret’s face, but she quickly lowered her head as public defender Jonathan Hayes sat beside them at the defense table. Hayes looked overwhelmed, flipping nervously through a mountain of prosecution evidence he had received only hours prior.

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Patricia Holbrook," the bailiff announced.

Judge Holbrook, a stern woman with a reputation for zero tolerance regarding financial crimes and domestic abuse, took her seat at the bench. She adjusted her glasses, looking down at the heavy case file with an expression of profound disapproval.

"We are here for the bail hearing in the matter of the State of New York versus Margaret Vance and Evelyn Vance," Judge Holbrook began, her voice echoing clearly through the courtroom. "Charges include Grand Larceny in the First Degree, Scheme to Defraud, Criminal Forgery, Identity Theft, and Depraved Indifference Endangerment of a Vulnerable Adult. Prosecutor Sterling, state the government's position on bail."

Prosecutor Sterling stood up smoothly, adjusting his jacket. "Your Honor, the State strongly requests that both defendants be held without bail pending trial. Over a period of four years, the defendants systematically embezzled over two hundred thousand dollars from the primary victim, Andrew Vance, while subjecting his wife, Clara Vance, to extreme physical neglect, withholding medical care for a documented cancerous tumor, and forging legal documents to seize her inherited land."

Sterling gestured toward Andrew. "When confronted, the defendants attempted to hide assets, flee to luxury accommodations, and actively resisted law enforcement officers during their arrest. They possess no independent legitimate income, their liquid assets have been frozen under civil recovery orders, and they pose an extreme flight risk as well as a direct psychological threat to the victims."

Judge Holbrook nodded slowly, taking notes before turning her gaze toward the defense table. "Mr. Hayes, what say you?"

Jonathan Hayes stood up, clearing his throat nervously. "Your Honor... my clients maintain their absolute innocence. This is a tragic family dispute over real estate and shared expenses that has been blown vastly out of proportion by Mr. Vance and his legal team. My clients are lifelong residents of Saratoga County with deep community ties. We request a reasonable bail amount set at fifty thousand dollars each, which can be secured through equity or family contacts."

Before Hayes could sit down, Evelyn suddenly burst out of her chair, her waist chain rattling loudly against her orange jumpsuit.

"Your Honor! Please! You have to listen to me!" Evelyn shrieked, ignoring her lawyer's frantic hand gestures telling her to sit down. "It's all a setup! My brother Andrew is a abusive monster!"

The courtroom erupted into quiet murmurs. Judge Holbrook’s eyebrows shot up, and she slammed her gavel down once. "Silence in the gallery! Miss Vance, sit down and let your counsel speak for you!"

"No! I won't be quiet!" Evelyn screamed, her voice cracking with wild hysterics as she pointed her cuffed hands directly at Andrew. "He beat my mother! He came home from Canada wild and violent! He forced Clara to stay in the basement so he could take all the money for himself and start his own business! He framed us! He forged those bank records using dark-web software! He made those fake audio clips using artificial intelligence!"

Andrew didn't flinch. He sat completely still, looking at Evelyn with a look of cold, tragic pity.

Sarah Vance leaned over to Prosecutor Sterling and whispered, "Let her speak. She's digging her own grave."

Evelyn turned back to Judge Holbrook, tears streaming down her face, playing the role of a desperate victim. "Your Honor, Clara doesn't even have cancer! She shaved her own head to get attention! She sold her hair to pay for illegal drugs! My mother and I were trying to protect Andrew from her! We were saving that money in safe accounts to keep Clara from stealing it! Andrew is manipulating the entire legal system to steal my mother's home and destroy my life!"

Judge Holbrook stared at Evelyn for five long, agonizing seconds. The courtroom was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

"Are you finished, Miss Vance?" Judge Holbrook asked, her voice dropping to a dangerously low, icy tone.

Evelyn blinked, breathing heavily, expecting the judge to show sympathy. "Yes, Your Honor... please, just let us go home. We are the real victims here."

Judge Holbrook picked up a blue folder on her desk. "Miss Vance, prior to this hearing, this court received an official medical report directly from the Oncology Chief at Albany Medical Center. Attached were high-resolution radiological scans of Clara Vance's thoracic cavity showing a localized malignant tumor, alongside toxicological screenings showing zero illicit substances in her blood. I also have official police bodycam footage from the day of your arrest, where you explicitly stated, and I quote, 'She was going to die anyway, so why shouldn't we have the land?'"

Evelyn’s face drained of every drop of color. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. Margaret buried her face in her cuffed hands, letting out a low, desperate groan.

"Furthermore," Judge Holbrook continued, her eyes flashing with anger, "you have displayed zero remorse, attempted to fabricate outrageous allegations of assault and technological forgery against the primary victim without a single shred of evidence, and actively disrupted these legal proceedings."

Judge Holbrook slammed her gavel down hard. BANG!

"Bail is DENIED for both defendants," Judge Holbrook ruled firmly. "Margaret Vance and Evelyn Vance will remain remanded in custody at the Saratoga County Correctional Facility until their trial date. Court is adjourned!"

"No! No! You can't leave us here!" Evelyn shrieked as two heavy-set female correction officers grabbed her arms, dragging her backward toward the holding cell door. Her boots scraped loudly against the linoleum floor as she kicked and screamed. "Andrew! Tell them! Andrew, I'm your sister! You can't leave me in jail! Help me!"

Margaret turned as she was led away, her eyes locked onto Andrew. Her regal facade was completely shattered, replaced by a pathetic, desperate terror. "Andrew... please... son... don't do this to your mother..."

Andrew stood up slowly. He pulled his dark suit jacket straight, looked his mother straight in the eyes, and said three quiet words that echoed through the empty courtroom:

"See you in court."

As the heavy steel doors slammed shut behind Margaret and Evelyn, locking them away in the county jail, Andrew turned to Sarah Vance and Prosecutor Sterling.

"What's the next step?" Andrew asked, his voice steady and resolute.

"Now," Sarah said with a satisfied smile, opening her briefcase, "we go after every single asset they tried to hide. We begin the formal civil asset recovery process, and we return everything they stole back to you and Clara."
