Chapter 5 - BLOOD AND ASHES

We crashed to the cold concrete floor in a chaotic scramble of limbs, heavy clothes, and screaming fury. The gun clattered away into the shadows, echoing ominously through the cavernous warehouse. Amos was old, but he possessed the unnatural, wiry strength of a man fighting for his survival. His calloused hand slammed into my throat, shutting off my airway instantly.
"You arrogant little brat!" he growled, his breath hot and smelling of decay as he pressed me down against the floor.
I gagged, striking wildly at his face with my fists, my nails tearing across his withered cheek. He winced, but his grip on my neck tightened, spots of black floating across my vision. I clawed at his arm, my strength rapidly draining as oxygen was cut off from my brain.
"Amber!" Daniel’s frantic voice sounded miles away.
In the dim light, I saw Daniel throw his weight sideways with suicidal desperation. The heavy steel chair tipped over, slamming onto its side against the concrete. With a grunt of agonizing pain, Daniel dragged his body across the floor, still bound to the broken chair, and slammed his heavy shoulder directly into Amos’s ribs.
The force of the impact knocked the breath out of the old man, forcing him to loosen his choking grip on my neck. I gasped, rolling away, coughing violently as cold air rushed back into my lungs.
Amos rolled onto his back, gasping, but his yellowed eyes immediately began searching the floor for his fallen weapon. The gun lay three feet away, gleaming under the single hanging bulb.
He scrambled toward it on his hands and knees.
"Amber! The gun!" Daniel screamed, trying to maneuver his bound body to block the old man.
I threw myself across the floor, ignoring the sharp pain in my chest, and reached out. My fingers brushed the cold steel frame of the revolver at the exact same moment Amos's gnarled hand clamped down on the barrel. We fought over the weapon, wrestling in the dirt, both of us pulling frantically.
Amos was stronger, twisting the weapon out of my grasp and bringing the butt of the heavy gun down brutally against the side of my face.
Pain exploded behind my eyes. I collapsed backward, my head spinning, the world dissolving into a blur of grey noise.
Amos stood up unsteadily, wiping blood from his cheek, his breath coming in ragged, wheezing gasps. He pointed the revolver down at me, his milky eye wide with psychotic rage. "Just like your father," he panted, his thumb pulling back the hammer once again. "Stubborn to the bitter end."
BOOM!
The massive sliding doors at the front of the main warehouse were suddenly blown inward with a deafening explosion of splintering wood and twisted metal. Bright, blinding white searchlights cut through the darkness, illuminating the thick haze of dust.
"POLICE! HANDS IN THE AIR! DROP THE WEAPON!" heavy voices amplified by bullhorns shouted from the far end of the facility.
Amos froze, the brilliant beams of light washing over his pale face. Tactical boots thundered against the concrete floor, approaching from multiple angles. SWAT officers were breaching the perimeter.
Amos looked down at me, then at Daniel, and finally toward the incoming wall of armed police officers. A twisted, dark realization settled over his features. He knew it was over. There was no escape, no cover-up left to execute.
Instead of dropping the gun, Amos spat on the floor, turned, and sprinted with a heavy limp toward the rear exit of the maze, disappearing into the dark recesses of the warehouse.
Seconds later, Detective Kellan rushed into the small room, his firearm raised, flanked by three armored officers.
"Amber! Are you hit?!" Kellan yelled, dropping to his knees beside me and supporting my shoulders.
"I'm... I'm okay," I wheezed, clutching my bleeding cheek. "He went... through the back... he has a gun!"
Kellan turned to the tactical officers. "Secure the perimeter! Cut off the rear fire escapes! Don't let him reach the river!"
While officers swarmed past us, Kellan pulled out a pocket knife and rapidly sliced through the nylon ropes holding Daniel to the fallen chair. As soon as his wrists were free, Daniel didn't look at Kellan, nor did he check his own severe injuries. He crawled over to me on his knees, reaching out with trembling, blood-stained hands to touch my face.
"Amber... oh God, Amber, I'm so sorry," he sobbed, his chest heaving. "I am so, so sorry..."
I looked into the eyes of the man I had lived with for nearly two decades. The man who had held me when I cried, who had built a home with me, but who was also a stranger—a man carrying a dark, horrific secret that had destroyed innocent lives and brought a killer to our doorstep.
I pushed his hands away.
The rejection was silent, but it hit him harder than any blow Amos had delivered. Daniel flinched, his face crumbling in utter devastation, dropping his hands into his lap.
"We need to get you both to an ambulance," Kellan said grimly, picking up his radio as distant gunshots echoed from the rear of the warehouse.
BANG! BANG!
Silence fell over the cavernous space once again, heavy and absolute.

Minutes later, a tactical officer returned, stepping into the room and offering a brief, somber nod to Detective Kellan. "Target is down, Detective. He tried to shoot his way through the rear containment team. It's over."
The Monster of the Yellow Roses was dead. But as I sat on the cold concrete floor, surrounded by police officers and the shattered remnants of my past, I realized the terror was far from finished. The killer was gone, but the truth had survived—and it was about to destroy everything that remained.
