Chapter 5 - THE COLLAPSE OF AN EMPIRE

Z

Richard’s hand trembled violently as he pulled his phone from his inner suit pocket. He stared at the glowing caller ID as if it were a venomous snake ready to strike.

"A-Answer it," Richard stammered to himself, stepping back from the counter, his polished corporate demeanor completely shattered. He pressed the phone to his ear with a shaking hand. "Hello? Marcus... sir, I—"

The voice on the other end of the line was so loud, so furious, that even I could hear every single word through the speaker from three feet away.

"Richard, what the hell do you think you are doing?!" the voice roared. "Are you out of your mind?! You took city inspectors to intimidate Luke Vance?!"

"Marcus, listen to me, it's a misunderstanding!" Richard panicked, turning his back to us and rushing toward the glass doors of the garage. "The boy is blackmailing my wife! He's trying to destroy our family's reputation over an old—"

"Shut your mouth!" Marcus Vance slammed his hand on a desk on the other side of the line. "Luke Vance is the chief patent holder for our entire logistics fleet! His engineering patents generate forty percent of our firm's annual revenue! Do you have any idea what you've done, you arrogant fool?!"

Richard froze in the middle of the waiting room floor. His eyes wide with pure, unadulterated shock. He slowly turned around to look at Luke, who was standing quietly behind the glass counter, his arms folded across his chest, watching Richard like an apex predator watching an insect trap itself in a web.

"Marcus... I didn't know..." Richard whispered, his voice cracking. "I thought he was just a local mechanic..."

"Because you're a snob, Richard!" Marcus snarled. "You and your hysterical wife judged a man by the oil on his shirt instead of doing five minutes of basic corporate research! Luke built his company from nothing while you lived off your wife's family trust! Effective immediately, Apex Global is freezing all funding for your fifty-million-dollar merger. We are launching an internal ethics review into your conduct."

"Marcus, no! Please! My firm will go bankrupt! The investors will sue me!" Richard begged, tears of blind panic welling in his eyes.

"Then I suggest you get down on your knees and beg Luke Vance for forgiveness," Marcus said coldly. "Because if he pulls his patents from our agreement, I will personally ruin you in civil court. You have one hour to fix this."

The line went dead.

The silence that fell over the reception area was suffocating. The two city inspectors, who had been brought along by Richard to enforce his corrupt Cease and Desist order, looked at each other in absolute terror. They quickly realized they had just been dragged into a massive corporate war between billionaires—and they were standing on the wrong side of the battlefield.

"Mr. Vance..." one of the inspectors stammered, frantically grabbing the red folder off the counter. "There... there seems to have been an administrative error with this complaint. The allegations of environmental hazards appear to be... completely unsubstantiated. We will be canceling this audit immediately."

"Good," Luke said softly, his voice cutting through the air like a cold blade. "Now take your paperwork and get out of my shop."

The two inspectors didn't hesitate. They sprinted out the door, jumped into their city vehicles, and sped away so fast their tires kicked up gravel across the parking lot.

Now, only Richard remained.

The powerful, arrogant equity lawyer who had walked into the garage twenty minutes ago to destroy us was now standing alone in the middle of the room, his expensive suit rumpled, his hair messy, shivering as if he had just been thrown into an ice bath.

He slowly walked back toward the counter, his head bowed, unable to meet Luke's eyes.

"Luke..." Richard choked out, his arrogance completely evaporated. "Please... you can't do this. You're going to destroy my life. My firm... my reputation... everything I've worked thirty years for..."

"You came here to destroy my life, Richard," Luke said, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the counter. "You brought city officials to close my doors. You tried to force me to bury the fact that your wife tried to murder my wife. You called my mother pathetic."

"I was wrong!" Richard cried out, placing his hands together in a desperate plea. "I was trying to protect Alison! She's mentally unstable, Luke! She's been drinking for months because she knew the truth about your mother was going to come out eventually! She was terrified!"

"And what about my mother, Richard?" Luke asked, his tone dropping into a terrifyingly soft register. "Who protected her when your family branded her a thief? Who protected her when she was sitting in a freezing car with a seven-year-old child, wondering how she was going to buy food? Did anyone show her mercy?"

Richard had no answer. He squeezed his eyes shut, tears streaming down his flushed cheeks.

"Here is what is going to happen," Luke said, taking a step back. "You are going to walk out of here. You are going to go to the District Attorney's office, and you are going to instruct your wife's legal team to withdraw all motions to dismiss her charges. She will plead guilty to Aggravated DUI and Vehicular Assault."

Richard gasped. "She'll go to prison!"

"She tried to run over Sarah," Luke snapped, his eyes flashing with fire. "She belongs in prison. And second... your wife and your mother-in-law will issue a full, formal, public apology to my mother's memory in the city's largest newspaper. Printed on the front page of the metro section."

"They'll never agree to that!" Richard sobbed. "The social disgrace—"

"Then you can watch your equity firm collapse by five o'clock today," Luke cut him off ruthlessly. "And when Apex pulls its funding, I will personally file a civil lawsuit against you for corporate intimidation and abuse of power. You will lose your house, your business, and your license to practice law."

Luke pointed a finger toward the front exit.

"You have forty-five minutes left, Richard. I suggest you start running."

Richard stared at Luke for one last, terrifying second, realizing that the man he had looked down on as a simple "grease monkey" was, in reality, a ruthless, brilliant titan who held his entire life in the palm of his hand.

Without saying another word, Richard turned and stumbled out of the garage, practically falling through the glass doors as he scrambled toward his luxury sedan.

I stood beside Luke, watching the car speed away down the avenue. The tension in my body finally began to melt away, replaced by an overwhelming sense of awe and love for the man standing beside me.

I wrapped my arms around his waist, resting my head against his broad shoulder.

"You never told me you were a partner at Apex," I whispered, smiling slightly against his shirt.

Luke wrapped his arm around me, kissing the top of my head softly. "I didn't want you to love me for a bank account, Sarah. Your family spent their whole lives believing money was the only thing that gave a person value. I wanted you to love me for who I was when I was underneath a car."

"I loved you the second you fixed my father's brakes while he was insulting you," I said softly, looking up into his dark, steady eyes. "I just didn't realize my husband was a genius."

"Not a genius," Luke smiled faintly. "Just a man who remembers where he came from."

Suddenly, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw a text message from my mother. It was a photo of an old, faded envelope—and a message underneath that made my breath catch in my throat.

Sarah... Mom just collapsed. She's in the ICU. But before she lost consciousness, she handed me this. It was hidden in her safe. You and Luke need to see this immediately. It wasn't just Alison who ruined Luke's mother. It was someone else.
