Chapter 14 - The Blood on the Threshold

Before the two armed men could cross the room, the heavy double-hung glass window of the study shattered inward in an explosion of iron and wood.

A flashbang grenade bounced across the rug, detonating with a blinding white light and a deafening, bone-rattling roar.

The shockwave knocked me off my feet, slamming my head against the oak desk. The room turned into a chaos of white smoke, high-pitched ringing, and rapid, suppressed gunfire.

"Ethan! Get down!" Mara’s voice screamed through the smoke.

I scrambled beneath the desk, my hands covering my head as automatic rounds tore through the bookshelves above me, showering the floor in shredded paper and splinters.

Through the haze, I saw Mara diving through the shattered window, wearing a heavy Kevlar vest, a tactical shotgun held firmly in her hands. She fired twice, the heavy 12-gauge blasts blowing the first gunman backward through the study door into the hallway.

Julian didn't panic. He moved with chilling, practiced efficiency, stepping behind the second guard, pulling a small silver pistol from his suit pocket, and firing three precise rounds toward the window.

Mara ducked behind the overturned armchair, returning fire as glass and plaster rained down around her.

"Ethan! The locket!" Mara yelled over the gunfire. "Don't let him take the locket!"

I reached into my shirt, snapped the silver chain from around my neck, and grabbed the teardrop-shaped locket. It wasn't just jewelry. As I pressed the tiny seam along its base, the silver casing popped open, revealing a micro-encrypted flash drive no larger than a fingernail.

Julian saw it. His eyes flared with absolute, desperate greed.

He stepped over the fallen body of his guard, raising his pistol directly at my face. "Give it to me, Ethan! Or I swear to God I will leave you in the same grave as your father!"

"You killed my father?" I screamed, the last piece of the family nightmare falling into place.

"He was soft! Just like you!" Julian spat, his finger tightening on the trigger.

BOOM.

A single high-caliber rifle shot echoed from the woods outside the house, shattering the remaining window frame. The round passed cleanly through Julian’s shoulder, the force spinning him around and slamming him against the fireplace.

His pistol clattered onto the hearth.

Through the front door, tactical officers in full black body armor burst into the hallway, led by Marcus Vance, his service weapon raised.

"Clear! Clear!" the officers shouted, securing the hallway and slamming Julian to the floor, pinning his arms behind his back.

Marcus walked into the smoke-filled study, his weapon lowered, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He looked down at his older brother bleeding on the rug, then over at me crouching beneath the desk.

"You okay, kid?" Marcus asked, his voice shaking slightly.

I pulled myself up from the floor, my hands covered in plaster dust and blood from a small cut on my forehead. I held out my palm, showing Marcus the micro-flash drive resting in the center of my hand.

"She had it the whole time," I whispered, tears cutting through the grime on my face. "She carried the master key on her chest until the day she died."

Julian groaned on the floor, his face pressed against the cold stone of the hearth, looking up at me with pure hatred. "It doesn't change anything... Ethan. Helios... is bigger than... a single drive..."

"No," Mara said, stepping out from behind the armchair, lowering her shotgun, her face covered in soot. "It isn't. Because this drive doesn't contain evidence, Julian. It contains the self-executing virus Cara wrote six years ago. The moment this drive connects to a federal server, every encrypted bank account, every shell corporation, and every server owned by Helios Holdings across the world will be permanently erased."

Julian’s face went completely dead gray.

"She didn't just want to expose you," I said, stepping closer to my uncle, looking down into his cold blue eyes. "She wanted to erase you from existence."
