Chapter 6 - The Dead Man's Chessboard

I stood frozen in the pouring rain, staring at the face of the man I had buried three days ago.
He didn't look like a frail, dying cancer patient. He wore a heavy tactical jacket, black cargo pants, and leather gloves. His frame was broader, his posture straight and dangerous. The gray in his hair was still there, but the hollow, gaunt look of a man in his final days was entirely gone.
"Carl?" I whispered, my voice completely swallowed by the sound of falling rain.
"His name isn't Carl, Megan," Victor wheezed from the ground, blood pooling around his knees as he struggled to breathe. "He... he tricked us all..."
Charles—or whatever monster was standing on that container—jumped down ten feet onto the wet pavement with the fluid agility of a trained soldier. He racked the bolt of his rifle, stepped over his bleeding brother, and pointed the weapon directly at my chest.
"Charles... what is this?" I sobbed, tears cutting hot tracks down my freezing cheeks. "I watched you die! I held your hand in that hospital bed! I signed your death certificate!"
"You signed a fake certificate prepared by Dr. Evans, who has been on my payroll for five years," Charles said. His voice was no longer soft and gentle. It was deep, commanding, utterly devoid of the warmth he had shown me over tea and board games. "The body in that casket was a medical cadaver bought from an overseas vault, altered with modern prosthetics to match my DNA."
I staggered back, pressing my hand to my mouth to keep from screaming. "Why? Why did you do this to me?"
"Because I needed a puppet," Charles said coldly, stepping closer until the cold steel barrel of his rifle was mere inches from my forehead. "Julian was too paranoid to fall for a simple corporate lawsuit. I needed him to believe I was dead so he would come out of the shadows to claim the trust. And I needed an innocent, naive civilian like you to act as the legal holder of the shares, so Julian's attention would be entirely focused on hunting you while I swept up his assets."
"You... you used me," I whispered, the realization cutting deeper than any knife. "Every talk about my mother... every cinnamon roll recipe... every game of chess..."
"Was a calculated performance to build absolute trust," Charles said without a trace of remorse. "Your father was a loyal soldier, Megan. He died protecting me. It was only fitting that his daughter served the family business in the end."
"You monster!" I screamed, lashing out to strike his face.
Charles caught my wrist effortlessly, twisting it just enough to force me to my knees beside his bleeding brother. With his free hand, he reached into my coat and yanked out the leather notebook.
"Thank you, Megan," Charles murmured, tucking the notebook into his tactical vest. "With this ledger and the drive Victor so kindly retrieved, I now have complete, undisputed control over Vale Global. Julian will be arrested by federal agents within the hour, Victor will bleed out on this pier, and you..."
He raised the rifle, aiming it straight between my eyes.
"...you have outlived your usefulness."
"Charles, no!" a voice bellowed from the shadows.
BANG.
A shot rang out from behind the shipping containers. Marcus had broken cover, firing his sidearm at Charles. The heavy bullet struck Charles's shoulder, throwing him backward against a metal crate.

"Run, Megan! RUN!" Marcus yelled, firing two more rounds to cover my escape.
I didn't hesitate. I snatched the silver chain with the flash drive out of the puddle where Victor had dropped it, scrambled to my feet, and sprinted into the maze of shipping containers as gunfire erupted behind me.
