Chapter 14 - The Dawn of Truth

The sun rose over the Berkshire hills, casting a warm, golden light through the windows of the secluded cabin.
Lena sat at the wooden table, a mug of hot tea between her hands. She hadn't slept all night. The satellite phone lay in the center of the table, silent.
Beside her, Ellie was coloring a picture of a sunlit castle, her face peaceful and undisturbed by the storm that had raged hours away.
The phone rang.
Lena scrambled to pick it up, her hands shaking. "Mom? Are you there?"
"It’s over, Lena," Nora’s voice came through the line, clear and calm. "Victor is in federal custody. The FBI has the forged passports, the cash, and the travel documents. He won't be getting bail. He is facing fifteen to twenty years in a federal penitentiary."
Lena let out a long, shuddering gasp. The mug of tea slipped from her fingers, spilling across the table, but she didn't care. She sank back into her chair, her hand covering her face as tears—tears of absolute, overwhelming relief—finally washed over her.
"He... he can't hurt us anymore?" she whispered.
"Never again," Nora said. "The house is safe. The school is safe. Your life is yours again, Lena."
Lena looked over at Ellie, who had stopped coloring and was watching her mother with wide, curious eyes.

"Is Grandma coming home?" Ellie asked.
Lena wiped her eyes, a beautiful, genuine smile breaking across her face. "Yes, sweetie. Grandma is coming home. And we are going home too."
