Chapter 4 - Twisted Truths

The sight of Evan standing beside that dark, heavily tinted pickup truck made the world tilt on its axis.

For two years, I had listened to Clara describe him as a weak, controlling, spineless coward who was using high-priced corporate lawyers to drain her bank account and tear their son away from her. But standing here now, wearing a sharp grey suit, his face pale and eyes wide with calculating terror, he didn't look like a coward. He looked like a man who had backed a dangerous predator into a corner, only to realize he was locked in the room with it.

"Evan..." I gasped, dragging the semi-conscious Jesse across the pristine green lawn. "What the hell is going on? Where is Clara? Where is Liam?!"

Evan didn't answer. He looked frantically toward the open back door of the house behind me. He heard the uneven, limping heavy steps crossing the kitchen hardwood.

"Get in the truck, Arthur!" Evan screamed, his composure completely shattering. "Get in the fucking truck right now if you want to live!"

"Not until you tell me where my daughter is!" I yelled back, standing my ground on the grass, holding the heavy canvas bag tightly against my chest like a shield.

The rear screen door burst open. The scarred man stepped out onto the porch, his face twisted into a mask of pure, murderous rage, his left leg dragging slightly as he walked. He raised the suppressed pistol directly toward my face.

Evan acted on sheer panic. He lunged into the driver's seat of the pickup, threw the vehicle into reverse, and slammed his foot on the accelerator. The heavy truck roared backward over the curb, smashing straight into the wooden fence lining Clara's driveway.

"GET IN!" Evan shrieked, swinging the rear passenger door open from the inside.

The scarred man fired.

A quiet thump cut through the air, and a hole exploded through the glass of the truck's rear window right beside my ear, showering me with safety glass.

I didn't have a choice. I shoved Jesse headfirst into the floorboards of the back seat, threw myself in after him, and slammed the door shut just as another bullet embedded itself in the heavy steel frame.

Evan slammed the gear shifter into drive. The tires screamed against the asphalt, burning rubber, leaving thick black marks on the quiet suburban street as the heavy truck lunged forward, throwing me back against the leather seat.

I scrambled up, looking out the shattered rear window.

The scarred man stood in the middle of Clara's perfectly manicured street, lowering his weapon. He didn't chase us. He didn't run. He simply raised his phone to his ear, staring after our speeding truck with eyes that promised cold, inevitable death.

Inside the cabin, the air was thick with panic, the smell of burnt rubber, and the heavy, metallic stench of fresh blood from Jesse's head wound.

"You ruined everything, Arthur!" Evan screamed, hitting the steering wheel with his open palm as he tore through a red light at sixty miles an hour. "You were supposed to be at home! The lawn guy was supposed to finish and leave! Why were you in that fucking house?!"

"My grandson was crying in there, Evan!" I roared back, my voice cracking with rage as I leaned over the front console, grabbing him by his necktie. "Who was that woman in the basement?! Why did that monster execute her in cold blood?! Where is Clara?!"

Evan choked, tugging at my grip on his collar with one hand while keeping his other hand locked onto the steering wheel.

"Clara isn't at the airport, Arthur!" Evan yelled, tears finally spilling down his pale cheeks. "She never went to the airport! She's being held in a safe house downtown!"

"Held by who?!"

"By the people I work for!" Evan sobbed, swerving violently to avoid an oncoming delivery van. "By the people she stole from!"

I let go of his tie, stunned. "What are you talking about?"

Evan wiped his face with his sleeve, his breathing ragged. "Clara isn't who you think she is, Arthur. You think she's your sweet, innocent daughter who teaches third-grade art? She found out what my firm was doing six months ago. She accessed my encrypted files. She didn't file for divorce because our marriage was failing—she filed for divorce to create a legal shield so she could move stolen corporate data without raising red flags!"

My mind reeled. "Data? What data?"

Evan glanced at the dark canvas duffel bag sitting on the seat beside me. His eyes were wide with a combination of dread and absolute desperation.

"That bag," Evan whispered, his voice trembling violently. "That bag contains the hard drives with the master ledgers for the Vance Consortium. Unredacted records of offshore accounts, blackmail assets on half the state senate, and the real offshore identities behind the human trafficking rings operating out of the port."

He took a sharp, jagged breath.

"Your sweet little girl didn't just walk away from me, Arthur. She stole fifty million dollars in encrypted cryptocurrency and the only evidence that can put thirty very powerful, very dangerous men in federal prison for the rest of their lives. And she used Liam as her ultimate bargaining chip."
